Mary Stearnes started out making windowboxes for friends 14 years ago and it soon grew into a business. Here are some things she’s learned about creating amazing plantings like the ones above for friends and clients.

BOX BASICS

There are lots of windowbox styles, but not all of them are easy to to create windowboxes like the ones above that look good and last a long time. They’re all at least 10 inches deep and wide but the length depends on the house. Mary says to make the box at least the length of the window frame and ideally out to the trim as you see in the illustration at right.
