French and native language Creole is spoken in Haiti, a former French colonial island country with a surface area of 27 thousand 750 square kilometers. After the 18th century, Christianity was replaced by the Voodoo belief, which is common in the country and has its roots in Africa. After the discovery of the American continent, the western part of the island called Hispaniola and the Dominican Republic in the east, was dominated by the French from the Spaniards in the 17th century and later took the name Haiti...Haiti, the first republic in history ruled by blacks brought from Africa as slaves, has a population of 10.2 million and a quarter of its population lives in the capital, Port au Prince
