    Introduction

    Decluttering is one of the best processes that you can bring into your life. Getting rid of items that we no longer need can be so freeing. Rather than looking at the clutter all of the time, or spending a ton of our time trying to pick up and manage all those items, we can go through the process of decluttering and just throw out, or donate, the items that we no longer need. No matter how frugal we think we are, or how good we think we are at managing what we purchase, there is likely a ton of items in our homes that we no longer need, use, or want, and decluttering them can make a world of difference.

    All of us have fallen into the trap. We live in a world where more is always better. We see commercials for countless products for sale all the time. Whether it is online, on our televisions, in our magazines, at the movies, on fliers, or on a billboard, it seems like we are always told that we need this item or another in order to keep up with our friends, or to feel like we are being successful. That we need these items in order to achieve happiness.

    But all of these items are actually ruining our lives. They aren’t helping us to feel happy at all. We are spending our time looking at the items, which can make us feel bad or down or can make it hard to focus. We are spending our time putting those items away, rather than spending that time with family and friends. And we are constantly fighting to find that happiness and that free time to do the things that we want.

    What are the Benefits of Decluttering?

    You look around your house, and you notice what a mess it is. You realize that you spend so much time picking items up and trying to make things look as nice as possible. Maybe you give up a lot of your day off in the hopes of making the house look nice, just to turn around and notice that all the junk is back on the floor. And as you are going through all of the mess and putting things away that you never use or don’t even have a use for.

    Everyone has some clutter around their home. They keep items that they don’t need, the holidays come around and their kids get even more toys, and material possessions just have a way of piling up and taking more space than they need. And we spend a lot of or free time trying to keep it all picked up. In the long run, we are missing out on a lot of time doing things that are more valuable to us because we are working to pick the stuff up, and we are working to pay off those items.

    The best thing for you to do is to declutter your home. This process is when you actually go through your home and look at every item. Then you must decide whether you want to keep that item because you actually use it or it brings you joy, or if you want to donate or dump the item. Taking a good hard look at all of the items that are around you can make you really think things through, and you may be surprised at how easy it actually is to get rid of items.

    It is true that clutter is going to come with a ton of baggage, and we mean that both figuratively and literally. When you take a look at your messy closet or some other area of your home that is a mess, you may definitely be able to see this going on. It is easy to feel stressed at the lack of organization, feel guilty about the things that are there that you never used, and even feel some confusion. Your home should not elicit these types of emotions, but when you have a lot of clutter, it certainly can.

    In fact, according to an article that was published in Psychology Today by Christopher Peterson, Ph. D, clutter, whether it is in your home, your office, or somewhere else, can have a negative effect psychologically. Peterson specifically pointed to a study that was published in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology. Peterson notes that these research studies the effect of children who lived in what is known as a chaotic environment. The focus though was more on the physical setting being noisy or disorganized, rather than other types of chaos that can ensure. The results showed that children who lived in these kinds of settings had a lot of problems.

    It is good for you to know that there is some connection there between the junk that we own and some of the other problems that we may be faced it. We can all feel it just a little when we sit down to a messy desk, or the kitchen just isn’t organized the way that we want. It can be very unsettling, and in some cases, it can hold us back from getting stuff down like we want in life.

    This process may take some time. Over the years, it is easy to accumulate a lot of different items, most of them we don’t need. But the amount of freedom that we gain from doing this, especially if we can keep up with it, is better than anything else in the world.

    There are a ton of benefits that can come from going through your home and decluttering the things that you no longer need and are just taking up space in your home. Some of the different benefits that you will be able to receive when you get started with decluttering include:

    You will have better concentration

    If you sit down at your desk and there is a ton of junk and other items on it, you may find that it is impossible for you to get a lot of things done. Your focus will continue to move to the various items that are laid out on your desk, rather than on the work that you need to get done. But if you take just a bit to remove the papers and other items and make sure that everything is put at the right angle, then you will find that it is easier to maintain your focus and actually get started on the work that needs to be done.

    According to Mikael Cho from Lifehacker.com, Whether it be your closet or office desk, excess things in your surroundings can have a negative impact on your ability to focus and process information. If you are able to take some time to clean out your home and get rid of some of the extra junk that is lying around, you may be pleasantly surprised at how much more focus you can have, how much better you feel on a daily basis, and even the amount of work you can get done.

    You will have more creativity in the tasks that you do

    This is a benefit that some people will debate about simply because of the fact that a lot of artsy types like to have a studio or a desk that is messy and they are still able to let all of those creative juices flow. But in the same vein as what we talked about before, it is possible that a clean and minimalist environment would be able to help out with the creative process.

    According to Marcy McKay from TheWriterLife.com, Dividing your attention between several stimuli – like your novel’s plot hole, your Twitter feed, and your messy desk, can often result in increased stress and decreased creativity and productivity. While this may not hold true for everyone, it is certainly something to consider if you are struggling with concentrating while getting work done and being creative.
