About this ebook
He is seeing the movie Casablanca in the theater. It is the first movie he sees in a theater since the Covid shut-down. This is a meditation on film and movie going. It is a love letter to Casablanca, as well as other movies. There are angels. There are pickpockets. There are always angels and pickpockets.
The Long Weekend Review is a new journal where each issue allows a writer to create whatever they want. The one rule is that it must be completed in 72 hours.

Vultures! Vultures Everywhere!
Begun July 10, 2020 1PM
––––––––
I beg of you monsieur, watch yourself. Be on guard. This place is full of vultures. Vultures everywhere
-Casablanca
On a morning from a Bogart movie, in a country where they turn back time, you go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre, contemplating a crime
-Al Stewart
Are you telling me you’d be happier with Victor Lazlo then with Humphry Bogart?
- When Harry Met Sally.
Only the Roman roads lead into the open. Only the most ancient traces lead anywhere. Where is the top of the pass here? And it’s only there that my country, the land of storytelling, begins.
-Wings of Desire
I don’t like champagne glasses. They remind me of operettas.
- Remembrance
Welcome to the Latchis. Casablanca is in theater one
- Said to me by an usher on June 26, 2020.
With the coming of the second world war, many eyes in imprisoned Europe turned hopefully or desperately toward the freedom of the Americas. Lisbon became the great embarkation point. Not everybody could get to Lisbon directly. So a tortuous, roundabout refugee trail sprung up. Paris to Marseilles. Cross the Mediteranean to Oran. Then by train or auto or foot across the rim of Africa to Casablanca in French Morocco. Here the fortunate ones, through money or influence or luck might obtain exit visas and scurry to Lisbon. And from Lisbon to the New World. But the others wait in Casablanca. And wait. And wait. And wait.
-Casablanca
Casablanca: Minute 2. One of the things not mentioned often about the film, Casablanca, is that the beginning is an unpleasant info dump. That disembodied narration lasts over a minute, which only feels like a long time when you are in a movie. A minute long speech is a huge amount of celluloid real estate. I suppose they needed people to understand the world they were creating, but must we have the Voice of God explain it all to us?
It still smells the same, only dustier.
- Wings of Desire.
I go to Brattleboro every few months to write. I have been doing this for several years. This year, with the Covid-19 lock down, I have not been there. But boy, did I ever need it. Staying at home and trying to work over Zoom was hard. Having the family also go through the hardships of isolation was another level of stress.
When Vermont started to open up, I made a reservation to be there. I love the artistic temperament of the town. I love the Latchis Hotel, where I stay. It is in downtown and convenient to everything. The Latchis was built in the 30s and has a wonderful Art Deco feel. There is a grand old movie house attached. It has been a very good place for me to focus on writing, and also a place to recharge my batteries with art and music
