    More Information

    PRELUDE

Years ago the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida had an adults-only entertainment area called, Pleasure Island.

All visitors entered over one 'bridge' paying the cover charge, before spilling into the island's party atmosphere.

Encircling an open air stage, and plenty of dance and mingling space were singular-themed bars, clubs and entertainment centers. One for country, one for disco, one for rock, one for hip-hop, one for jazz...and so on.

The most popular locations pulsated with overflowing crowds and trembling speakers.

The less visited were quiet escapes, and a welcome break.

A visitor could roam from one to the next, pulled along solely on the whim of musical taste that captured the soul in that moment.

Or you could spend all night inside one cocoon, hearing only sounds that pleased your ears.

If you were not sure where to go, you could follow the crowd or simply ask someone 'what's good tonight?'

When the noise grew too loud, you wandered outside to sway under the warm Florida night stars to a previously unknown random selection band, and occasionally world-famous stars who had earned the spot on center stage for the night.

You carried your drink with you, left your friends where they preferred, and enjoyed a singular experience, in a collected domain.

Pleasure Island was both a bastion of individual entertainment niche preferences, and one big party!

Sadly, Disney closed the club part of the island in 2008.

But the concept lives on, as the defining entertainment experience of the future - platforms providing a variety of options in one location, where all can enter, select a preference, and enjoy their own brand of niche entertainment without ever leaving.

Cable television began the process, delivering theme-specific content across the television dial...

Sirius Satellite Radio packaged every selection of music into its boxes...

While everyone talks about 'watching Netflix,' specific show recommendations come from friends, the Internet, and your own bored scrolling.

But those official platforms belonged to the established and connected.

The rise of YouTube delivered video production to everyone else. And subsequently pushed entertainment into its own corner by delivering, in one place, videos covering news, education, how-to's, political commentary, and every other visual imaginable (so far).

Audio would not be left behind...

The convergence of consumer desire for niche content, producer dispersion into the global general public, and free distribution through online platforms, fueled the audio streaming medium, podcasts.

And with the rise, came the challenges.

Unlike YouTube, podcasts have no common directory. The dominant player, Apple Podcasts, is certainly not the only one, and
