He also previously worked at the Division of Infectious Diseases, Allergy and Immunology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine (SLUSOM). In 2017, Jo filed a complaint against SLUSOM with the oversight body for American medical schools, which subsequently placed the school on probation for 18 months.

      INTRODUCTION

      Sometimes, the most controversial and dangerous thing to say is the simple and obvious truth, as in the parable of the emperor with no clothes. In April, President Donald Trump ended the US government’s funding for bat coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China, saying it was a mistake that he blamed on the Obama administration.¹ Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there was enormous evidence linking the outbreak of COVID-19 with the WIV.² However, Trump and Pompeo may have actually understated their case. After all, lightning does not strike twice. It is not just a coincidence that in a country as vast and populous as China, the greatest pandemic in a century emerged in close proximity to the nation’s only human biosafety level 4 lab (BSL–4),³ which had a large stockpile of bat coronaviruses, and this during the narrow time frame since the WIV
