Greg Vanden Berge
Born, raised and still living in Southern California, United States of America. I don't know if I would consider myself to be another typical high school dropout, but in the 11th grade I took and passed a high school equivalency test that allowed me to leave school one year early. From then on it was the school of hard knocks and when I finally figured out this wasn't going to work, became a student of life. I have over 35 years of experience building, remodeling and repairing apartments, condominiums, residential homes and commercial as well as industrial properties. My interests are history, psychology, business, construction, gardening and thoroughly enjoy sharing the things I've learned with anyone willing to listen. There is nothing better than spending time with friends and family having a wonderful meal, a few beers and intelligent conversation.

What is a Stairway
A stairway or set of stairs is usually a series of steps used to take you from a lower level to an upper-level.

Tools
Hammer

Pencil
Circular Saw
Framing Square
Tape Measure
Caulk Line
Optional Tools – nail puller, ladder, carpenter pouch or nail bags.
Hardware and Fasteners
Recommend using 16d nails for materials between an inch and one quarter (1 1/4) and an inch and a half (1 1/2
).
Recommend using 8d nails for materials between one half-inch (1/2) and three quarters of an inch (3/4
).
I can’t recommend screw sizes, because some building departments and engineers don’t recommend them to be used for assembling stairs using construction standard lumber.
I also recommend using galvanized or stainless steel nails for building exterior
stairs out of wood.
For additional holding power you can use ring shank, hot dipped or drive screw deformed shank type nails for stair treads and sheathing.

Safety
This book does not provide you with detailed safety information and recommends gathering more information on tool use, demolition, safety and assembling practices.
Safety Recommendation Tips
1. Avoid standing on stair stringers, joist and other framing members that haven’t been properly secured.
2. Avoid using power tools near water and make sure they are in good condition.
3. Use personal protection equipment like safety glasses, slip resistant shoes, earplugs, hardhats and gloves when necessary.
4. Inspect all ladders for defects before using them and make sure you use the
