JAMES PURPURA’S ARTISTIC APPROACH
LA DÉMARCHE ARTISTIQUE DE JAMES PURPURA
American colorist now based in Paris where he notably exhibited at the Grand Palais, James Purpura is a colorist-synesthete. This effect is a peculiarity in which the stimulation of one sense influenes another. It allows him to transcribe music through color and brush strokes. Rhythms, patterns, and instruments, as well as lyrics evoke for him colors and form. The sounds are thus expressed in an infinite number of visions in perpetual movement.
The artist's work is innovative, spontaneous, never written. He likes to play with the colors, release them. He uses them like a language and lets them dialogue on the canvas. The chromatic nuances that appear in his paintings through the music gives them life, a physical, material form. By seeking their space on the canvas, they make the imaginary tangible.
