    Vineyard Vibes - J. R. Huddleston

    #2020

IN THESE TIMES (#2020), we may not be entertaining as much, but we can still celebrate—-a romantic dinner at home for two, a fun (or fancy!) dinner with the kids. This is life and we should make the days count. And I hate to say just a family dinner because at the end of the day, why shouldn’t the most important people in our lives get our best?

Stay well, spend time with those who matter, and eat, drink, and be merry—-there will be brighter days ahead.

    Vineyard Vibes

NAPA AND THE SURROUNDING wine country host some of the greatest restaurants in the U.S., and yet the underlying vibe isn’t a stuffy, which-fork-do-I-use-so-the-maître d’-will-quit-glaring-at-me one, but rather a place where you are in a partnership with the restaurant to create and enjoy the best meal together. The ubiquitous wineries celebrate the unique way they bring a bottle to the table—-you can visit European-inspired wineries, warm and contemporary wineries that make you feel like you are in a Pottery Barn catalog, rustic tasting rooms riffing on a ranch or farmhouse atmosphere, and caves with the modern sensibility of concrete floors and crystal chandeliers. That is the most amazing thing about the vineyard vibe throughout Napa—they’ve taken things they’ve loved, added some great food and drink, and said, come as you are.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to re-create that in your own home?

Entertaining like they do in wine country takes some attention to the quality of food and drink and a willingness to open our homes to family and friends. The food isn’t fussy—I hate to even call them recipes because the dinners and drinks don’t depend on complicated steps or ingredients—and you and your guests will both have fun and it will be a night to remember.

Any of the party ideas can be expanded or contracted for whatever is the right number of people for you. The best part of all is that a lot of the prep work is done ahead of time so you will have time to get ready for your own party, and making the meal can be one of the party activities. If it is a family night, there is no better way to share cooking and clean up duties with the kids than if the dinner feels like a party!

To paraphrase Julia Child, people who love to eat and drink together are the best people.

Remember, food quality is the key ingredient, so think seasonal and smaller portions-—serving sizes should be smaller than Cheesecake Factory and bigger than Single Thread’s parade of one bite delicacies.

    Bastille Day

VIVÉ LA FRANCE! IF you’re anything like us, trying to get together with friends on the Fourth of July can be a nightmare of logistical scheduling between multiple barbecues and trying to avoid traffic jams around fireworks displays. But move to the middle of the month, and people’s schedules are freer and you can shop ahead for discounted fireworks and red, white, and blue decorations and a Bastille Day party is born! Between the fireworks and the croissants, this is always a winning combo for kids!

Thanks to France’s admiration of the Spirit of ’76, a lot of Independence Day decorations, barring those with a star motif, can be recycled for a Bastille Day (or a plain French Day) celebration. French flags can also be easily ordered from Amazon. If you ever bought a replica of the Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triumph as a souvenir or inspiration for a longed-for trip to Paris, dust them off and add them to the party décor.

Nothing is more French than Champagne and popping a bottle is an easy way to set the mood for a party celebrating that  je n'ais ce quoi. This easy menu starts with popcorn topped with melted truffle butter or butter and truffle salt.[1] I was introduced to truffle popcorn and Champagne at the Michelin star restaurant The Inn at Little Washington. The richness of the butter and the earthiness of truffle with the Champagne made me understand why people go crazy for the stuff. It really is an out-of-this-world combination. Since I’m usually fresh out of truffles, I
