INTRODUCTION
I have been motivated to write this biographical memoir about my grandparents’ because as I get older I realize what extraordinary things they had accomplished in their lifetime. Having become the family historian for some 25 years. I have collected a great deal of family data along with many documents from various family sources. Only recently did I study everything I had along with outside sources to develop a time line of their lives and accomplishments.
Stephen Foster Briggs was an exceptional inventor in the early 1900’s having accumulated over 100 patents during his lifetime. Many were significant in the early days of the auto industry. Some are still in use today. In 1974 he and Sherman Fairchild (famous businessman and inventor founder of Faierchild Camera and Fairchild Aviation) were the only two individuals who started two New York Stock Exchange Companies. In many ways SF was not your ordinary executive as his interest was in product development and innovation not day to day operation which he left to other competent individuals. In addition he was a very modest man who enjoyed having fun, tinkering, and enjoying life in a very laid back manner. At the same time in many ways he was a gambler who was willing to take extraordinary financial risk throughout his life. His wife Beatrice Branch Briggs of almost 70 years was a very understated and kind, loving person with a big heart for her family and charity especially in the community where they lived most of their life, Napes, Fl
They both had a major influence on the town of Naples in the 1950’s in both civic development and local charities. By piecing together their lives one sees ingenuity, drive, honesty and a wonderful spirt of generosity and giving back to family, community and many other charities. They had three children. My Dad, the oldest, Stephen A Briggs who devoted his life to OMC from 1935-1965, Barbara Briggs who was married to Robert McCulloch another small engine manufacturer and competitor, Dr. John Briggs who became a well known thoracic surgeon in Los Angeles, and James Briggs who was a very successful advertising executive. When SF retired from the OMC board Jim replaced his dad as well as became in charge of all non marine products.
The book traces their lives from simple beginnings in South Dakota to luxury living in Naples Florida including a multitude of investments that SF made some very successful, others a complete disaster.
STEPHEN FOSTER BRIGGS (1885-1976) BEATRICE BRANCH BRIGGS (1888-1979)
My grandparents families both came from England to America. The first BRIGGS in he New World was Joseph Briggs, a farrier who was on Block Island in 1757. The BRANCHES were among the first arrivals to America in 1634 in Tauro, MA.
From New England the families traveled West for several generations always looking for a better life.
STEPHEN FOSTER BRIGGS was born on a farm in Gary, S.D. near Watertown, S.D. Dec 4,1885. His parents STEHEN A BRIGGS and his wife (FLORA DYER FOSTER), had gone to Watertown in 1880 right after being married. STEPHEN A’s
