1 The Magic Of Thinking Big

Honestly speaking, the book, ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’ is one of the best self improvement books I have ever read. In this book written in the year 1959, Dr. David J. Schwartz, a Professor of Psychology at Georgia State University explains us how a human mind works and how can we harness its tremendous power to achieve success both in our personal and professional lives. He makes us believe that there is a magic in thinking big. All of us are products of our own thinking. It is absolutely wonderful to be interested in success and being interested in success is in fact a wonderful personal quality.

The book contains thirteen chapters and starts with a chapter called ‘Believe You Can Succeed and You Will’ in which Dr. Schwartz defines success in different terms. Success means different things to different people. For some, it may be personal prosperity, a fine home, a luxury vehicle, exotic vacations, financial security, and a good standard of life. For others, success means winning admiration, leadership, and being looked up to by people in his business and social circle. Success means freedom to certain group of people, freedom from fear, worries, frustrations, and failure. Sometimes success means self-respect, continually finding more real happiness and satisfaction from life and being able to do more for those who depend on you. Whatever it may be, according to the author, success should be the goal of a fruitful life and two basic qualities required for success are, first an earnest desire for greater success and second, the intelligence to select a tool that helps you realize your desire. In other words, success is a byproduct of your thinking big. Think big and you will live big in happiness and success. Dr. Schwartz goes on explaining the importance of positive beliefs. Belief, strong belief triggers the mind to figure out various ways to accomplish one’s goals and belief in great results becomes the driving force behind great creations. On the contrary, disbelief has a negative power. When the mind disbelieves, it attracts reasons to support this disbelief. Disbelief is the reason behind all failures.

Dr. Schwartz introduces us the concept of ‘thought factory’ and there are two foremen in charge of this factory: Mr. Triumph and Mr. Defeat. Mr. Triumph is responsible for the production of positive thoughts while Mr. Defeat supervises the production of negative thoughts. Both Mr. Triumph and Mr. Defeat are extremely obedient and the more work you give to either of these two, the stronger he becomes. So the wisest option is to fire Mr. Defeat right away and use Mr. Triumph for 100 percent of your time. When you employ Mr. Triumph full time, you will think success always. That is the first step towards the development of ‘power of belief’. Then remind yourself regularly that you are better than you think you are. The size of your success is determined by the size of your belief. So THINK BIG.

In chapter ‘Cure Yourself of Excusitis, the Failure Disease’, Dr. Schwartz urges us to observe human behavior and study people around us. He says that if we do so, we will gradually discover that unsuccessful people suffer from a mind-deadening thought disease, ‘Excusitis’. Every failure has this disease in advanced form. In other words, the most successful persons are those who are less inclined to make excuses. Dr. Schwartz, in this chapter, lists out four common forms of Excusitis: health(I don’t have the energy), intelligence (I’m not intelligent enough), age(I’m too old/young) and luck (I’m unlucky). Anyone who wants success must be ready to cure his ‘Excusitis’ disease. You can cure yourself of ‘Health Excusitis’ by refusing to talk about your health, by refusing to worry, by being grateful to the fact that your health is as good as it gets and by reminding yourself often that ‘it’s better to wear out than rust out’. For curing yourself of ‘Intelligence Excusitis’, you should never underestimate your intelligence and overestimate the intelligence of others. You should remind yourself several times daily that your attitudes are more important than your intelligence. You can cure yourself of ‘Age Excusitis’ by looking at your present age positively and by investing your future time in doing what you really
