What insights, observations, or general issues stood out for you in the Chapter 1 reading assignment? Why?

The idea that most stood out for me in the Chapter 1 reading assignment was the statement that the interaction of individual variables of the personality of the therapist and client are more influential than the identified therapeutic techniques used by the therapist. The author cites Michael Mahoneys writing, the person of the therapist is at least eight times more influential than his or her theoretical orientation and/or use of specific therapeutic techniques (Dumont, in Corsini & Wedding (2008), p.11). This struck me as a point critical to underscore learning in this course, because while the theory and technique of each branch of psychotherapy are important, awareness and understanding of personological variables are also critical for successful therapy. On a more pragmatic level, the caution that those new to the field of counselling and psychotherapy develop a therapeutic model that meets criteria with organizations that will allow for the future growth and stability of practice also stood out (Dumont, in Corsini & Wedding, p.13). While it is important to develop a theory and methodology... that fits your philosophy of life and personality, (Corsini, 2008, p.13) it is also important to remember that a therapists rules and methods of practice must also be supported by the associations and organizations that regulate the field. Generally, what counselling theories (as covered in the course) make the most sense to you at this time? Why? At this time the counselling theories that make the most sense to me are Adlerian Psychotherapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Existential Psychotherapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Integrative Psychotherapy. My depth of knowledge in each of these areas is minimal at this time, but it appears to me that in each of these approaches the therapist views the client as a person as inherently self-regulating and oriented toward growth. People and their symptoms are viewed alongside their personal environment, and the relationship between therapist and client is intended to be positive and genuine. The therapist assists the client in moving through their problems to find the solution appropriate for their situation, but the main direction and action of therapy comes from the client where possible, rather than the authority of the therapist. These approaches feel like they will have a better fit with my personality. I value the therapeutic process for its healing potential on its own more than the formal process of diagnosing a patient and proceeding according to a manualized treatment plan. I also like the way these approaches seem to complement one another, and believe different pieces of the theories could be used together to create a balanced and integrated methodology.
