A THEOLOGY OF SUFFERING & JUSTICE, FALL 2012: SESSION 04 NOTES THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL, PART 2 - STUART GREAVES

ISAIAH 42:9 I. EPHESIANS 1:4 HOLY, BLAMELESS IN LOVE A. It was determined in the eternal counsels of the Godhead before Genesis 1 that God would have a people who would love Him. 1. 2. 3. B. What He chose us When Before the foundation of the world Why To be blameless and holy in love

God determined that those who are found in the Son of God would be chosen and approved of God for the purpose of having intimacy without shame. 1. 2. 3. Holy set apart, to be His people possessing the beauty of God (Ps 90:17, Isa 61:3, Rev 4:4) Without blame enmity and hostility removed (Rom 8:1, Col 2:15, Rev 12:10, Gen 3:10-15) Before Him in love access, voluntary love, counterpart (Eph 5:31-32). It is significant to note that the New Jerusalem is called the bride of the Lamb (Rev 21:9).

C.

We are called to be before Him (1:3, 2:6) in love as we seek to live out the commandment of love the first and second commandments. The crowning reality and the height of redemption that is alluded to in 1:4 is expressed in what is called the great mystery. (Eph 5:31-33).
31

D.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Eph. 5:31-33) I am the LORD, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another (1 Corinthians 11:7), nor My praise to carved images. (Isa. 42:8)

II.

EPHESIANS 1:5-8 THE PRAISE OF THE GLORY OF HIS GRACE A. The primary purpose of the plan of redemption is the glory of God. God cares intensely for His own glory (Isaiah 41-44). The pleasure of His will is to the praise of His glory Gods pleasure in His own glory

God predetermined and established that the redeemed would have son-ship (authority and an inheritance) in Christ (John 1:12).
3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love (Eph. 1:3-4) C. Gods glory is revealed in His calling us to son-ship and it is seen as we walk out the reality of sonship. Forever the grace of God will be magnified (Eph 2:8-9). It is by the grace and power of God that we are accepted in Christ the Beloved and are now called the beloved of God.
15

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirsheirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (Eph. 1:15-17)
19

For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. (Rom. 8:19-23) D. The planned redemption of God (Rev. 13:8) was that the redemption of the redeemed would be accomplished in Christ. It was determined before the foundations of the earth that the Second Person of the Trinity would become a man and die for the sake of a people, and all this was in keeping with His grace (kindness 2:7). The mention of redemption through blood and the forgiveness of sins implies that this glorious plan of the Father involved great risk in that those who would be redeemed and become voluntary lovers would have real choices to be able to deny or accept God in His grace. Choice is what dignifies love. The vision is filled with risk for many reasons because it would mean that many of the most prized creation, human kind, would not accept His grace and end up in the Lake of Fire. This plan also meant that the Second Person of the Trinity would have to enter into the realm of the natural and be exposed to the plight and dilemma of humanity, sin and real temptation in order to purchase their salvation. The plan of God is a carefully thought through plan.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 34 For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor? 35 Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to him? 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen. 1Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. (Isa. 42:1)

A.

The mystery of God was devised according to Gods pleasure. 1. 2. 3. He wanted this plan. The plan brings great delight to Him. When we touch this plan it will fill us with delight and bind our heart to Him in a deeper way.

B.

God purposed the plan within Himself. 1. 2. 3. He is the sole architect of the plan. He found no inspiration outside of Himself for this plan. He reigns supreme in giving oversight to the execution of this plan.

IV.

INTERCESSION THE KEY TO UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY (EPH. 1:15-19)

15

Therefore (in light of 1:3-14) I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (Eph. 1:15-19) A. The way we gain insight into the mystery of Christ is through communion with Him in pursuing the knowledge of God. Paul is praying that the Lord will fill His church with revelation and spiritual understanding because the things of God are spiritually discerned. It takes God to reveal God to the human heart. To fully appreciate and understand the mystery of God in Christ, revelation (understanding) and wisdom (application) are necessary, and both come from God. The Spirit of God alone can impart these realities to the human heart.
12

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which mans wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (1 Cor. 2:12-13)

The Spirit of wisdom and revelation brings us into the experience of knowing God. The knowledge of God that Paul is praying for is more than the introductory understanding of God. Rather, He is contending for the Church to enter into the deeper and more intimate dimensions of the knowledge of God where the saints experience loving communion with God. The essence of eternal life is coming to the knowledge of God. The main point of eternal life is that people would be enraptured in the knowledge of God. This is eternal life, that they may know (experience) You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. (Jn. 17:3)

C.

D.

The knowledge of the Son of God does not refer to the introductory knowledge of Jesus that we receive at salvation, but rather the deeper knowledge, which refers to intimacy with God. This is the ultimate place to which God is bringing His Church. True apostolic ministry will bring people into a depth of understanding of the splendor and the majesty of Christ Jesus. This great apostolic prayer is for the gaining of insight into the ways, purposes and dealings of God. Paul is asking for insight into three realities concerning the mystery of God. 1. 2. 3. Hope of His calling: The vision and final destination of the redeemed Eph. 1:3-10. The riches of the glory of His inheritance: the value of the saints to God Eph. 1:11-12. The exceeding greatness of His power: the power of the resurrection Eph. 1:13-15.

E.

V.

THE HOPE OF HIS CALLING A. Paul prayed that the church would receive revelation of how God views their calling. God created us with a longing to participate in that which has lasting significance. There are three dimensions to the call of God (internal, external and eternal), and there are two components (individual and corporate). The natural mind cannot discern the ways, plans and purposes of God. Only by revelation can we understand Gods view. Our eternal calling (in the age-to-come) has a much larger impact than anything that we will accomplish now. The apostles made many references to their calling in the age-to-come. It takes revelation to see that our greatest impact and most important ministry is in the age to come.

The Father promised Jesus an inheritance, and the Son obtained an inheritance for the Father. It is amazing that God who possesses all things has an inheritance that He must wait for. Jesus inheritance is a people who are voluntary lovers of God (1:4). God will not force this on us but woos and wins us by His grace to freely respond to Him in love. The great prize of all the ages that the Father has chosen to give Jesus is a Church filled with voluntary lovers. We are what God wants most and what God is most committed to. We are that which is nearest and dearest to Jesus heart. We are the reward that God gave to Jesus because we are what Jesus most desires. This reveals His passion for us and gives us great dignity. This core truth about our spiritual identity is the foundation of our value and dignity. This changes why we do what we do in our calling. The revelation of being Gods inheritance has many implications for us. It speaks of how dear we are to God (we are what He wants), how He feels about us (as we walk out our calling in weakness), what it costs Him to walk out this love, what He requires from those He loves and why we do the things we do in walking out our calling.

B.

C.

The LORD's portion is His people; Jacob (Israel) is the place of His inheritance. (Deut. 32:9)

D.

Jesus must totally possess the people that He wants as His inheritance in that He shares His heart, home and Throne with them. They will represent Him as His Bride for all eternity.
4

If you will obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people 6 These are the words which you shall speak to Israel. (Ex. 19:4-6)
14

Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people (Titus 2:14) VII. THE UNFOLDING AND EXECUTION OF THE MYSTERY (EPH. 1:20-23) A. Paul prayed that we would receive revelation of the power that works in our life because we are related to Jesus whom the Father raised to His own right hand. The authority we now have is revealed most clearly in the book of Ephesians, especially in Eph. 1:16-2:7; 3:14-20; 6:10-19. In the resurrection, the Father set Jesus far above all angelic and demonic powers (Eph. 1:21). God's power in raising Jesus from the dead was the greatest display of power in Scripture. Satan sought to stop Jesus resurrection but was defeated by Jesus ascending to the Fathers right hand. This reality is more fully seen in Revelation 4-5. Ephesians 1:19-23 shows us the power that is made available to bring us into the place where the people of God become the expression of His fullness. Ephesians 1:22 is the climax of the millennium bringing all things to the submission of Christ unto the fullness of God being manifest in and through the Church as seen in Ephesians 1:9-10, 23, 3:10, 19. (Rev. 21:2-3)
