22. Agriculture sector

Between 1990 and 2006 output from UK agriculture changed little, but in 2006 it was 17
per cent higher than in the mid-1970s. By 1997 fertiliser use had risen by over half
compared with the mid-1970s but thereafter was considerably reduced. Methane (CH4 )
and ammonia (NH3) emissions have fallen - by 14 and 19 per cent respectively since 1990.
In 2005 farmland bird populations were 19 per cent lower than in 1990, and were 45 per
cent lower than in the mid-1970s.
