The Government's approach - delivering UK sustainable development
together
Contextual indicator
The number of UK households increased by 5.7 million between 1971 and 2001, from 18.7
to 24.5 million. Almost 70 per cent of the increase was due to an increase in the number of
single person households, from 3.4 million in 1971 (18 per cent of households) to 7.4
million in 2001 (30 per cent of households).
In 1971 there were about 700,000 more dwellings than households, rising to one million by
2001.
