Anurag Gogineni bags US varsity's top scholarship

August 16: University of Cincinnati has announced the coveted Global Scholarship worth US $100,000 to be presented to Anurag Gogineni, the only recipient of the highest level award this year owing to his excellent academics and extracurricular achievements. Gogineni will receive a full tuition scholarship of US $25,000, renewable for four years, for a total value of US $100,000. He will be pursuing his bachelors degree at the university, which commences in August 2012.

Out of the 1300 international applications received by the university, Gogineni was chosen as the most deserving candidate.

Cleansing the system is his mantra

BANGALORE: This 21-year-old Bangalore-based Srikar Gullapalli currently at Colgate University, New York, has a passion to 'shudhify ' (cleanse) the corrupt system in his home town. During his summer holidays this year, Srikar Gullapalli interviewed the aam janata at the offices of BBMP, BDA, sub-registrar , RTO as well as police stations and government hospitals. He found that 33.38% of those surveyed were not satisfied with service, 37.98% were asked to pay a bribe, 38.61% used a middleman to work done and 15% felt threatened.

He's the youngest researcher at IIMB's seventh annual conference on public policy and management. IIM-B's Centre for Public Policy is coordinating with civic agencies to get rid of corruption in public services, based on his report. At subregistrar offices, middlemen threatened to inform higher-ups , including the sub-registrar . This shows the nexus between these touts and officials. An MLA refused to admit the rampant corruption in government offices in his constituency. There's hardly been any effort by elected representatives to curb the menace. If processes are more organized, it reduces the likelihood of citizens using middlemen. The simpler the process, the less likelihood of citizens paying bribes. If government officers are accessible, it reduces the chances of citizens feeling threatened.

Mathematics and philosophy are like the hardware of a computer and every other subject the software. Maths and philosophy teach us how to think creatively and analyse, learning other subjects becomes very easy, says Samarasimha Kolli (called Samara in short). Samara is one of the toppers of his class at Merton College, University of Oxford, in the subjects of mathematics and philosophy. With mathematics and philosophy being his passion, he wants to pursue Ph.D. in them. Before diving headlong into academics again, he has come to India to discover his roots. Samara spent the first two years of his life in Madhira in Khammam district, where he was born. His mother Padmasri Chekuri belongs to the village. His father Prasanth, an anaesthesiologist, belongs to Jangaon in Warangal. When Samara was two, his family moved to Oman and a couple of years later to the U.K. After moving around a little bit, his parents settled down in Manchester and Samara finished his high school in Manchester Grammar School, scoring 599 out of 600 in mathematics, 597 in philosophy, and 600 in politics.

7Seas Entertainment: Ahead of the wave

For six years from 1999, Lingamaneni Maruti Sankar, with a B.E. and an MBA from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, was working at VisualSoft (sold to Megasoft later) in the product delivery and development team. While working there, he was visualising an enterprise of his own in the area of digital games, a fledgling area that was just catching the imagination of IT professionals. He quit the firm in 2006 and worked on the blueprint of his start-up for about six to eight months. Selling the idea to angel investors was, as expected, a tough task. I believe in developing a pool of games and building a repository of intellectual property. I do not believe in developing a game to sell it once for all. I am here to a play a long-term game, Maruti Sanker, now the Managing Director of 7Seas Entertainment, says. While betting his personal savings from his VisualSoft job, he went on to sell the idea. He raised Rs 1 crore from an angel investor, with which he started his firm with 10 people, including five programmers. Business segments His first game was 3D Sudoku for personal computers in 2007. A year later, the number rose to 100 and the firm started game portals called Onlinerealgames.com, Mobizill.com and Neodelight.com. The last one is a Germany gaming development firm with a library of 33 games the Hyderabad-based company acquired in 2008. The business model of the firm is giving non-exclusive permissions to Web sites and aggregators globally.

We have three business segments creating gaming IP, game publishing and game distribution. And our revenue model is game licensing, selling ad space in our portals and games, and selling mobile games. We are also developing film-based games. Whatever we do, we own the IP. There is no going back on this, he says.

We see a huge demand for Android content as the smartphone population and consumption of 3G services is increasing very fast. K. V. Chowdary is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service. With a Masters degree in Mathematics from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, he joined the IRS in 1978 through the Civil Services Examination, he was till now serving as the Director General (Investigations) in the national capital and was heading a number of high-profile I-T probes including the 2G spectrum allocation case and the HSBC Geneva taxpayers list.
