Guava leaves are from the tropical, fruit-bearing tree native to Mexico, Central America and South America. The leaves are often used in herbal medicine to treat a variety of conditions. Guava leaf is an herbal treatment that has been used in Asian medicine for centuries. However, the advice of a medical professional should be sought before trying to prevent, treat or cure any condition with guava leaf. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE People with diabetes are at an elevated risk for glycation-associated cardiovascular disease. Guava leaves have been found to reduce the risk of diabetes-related heart disease. Guava leaf extract was reported to be a powerful anticoagulant agent in a study published in 2007 in "Food Chemistry." This means that guava leaf extract is capable of preventing blood clots, thereby reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease. Cheap Airline Tickets For Best rates on Flights! Guava leaf extract was found to prevent transit in the intestines and delay the emptying of the stomach in mice with castor oil-induced diarrhea. The researchers even mention that guava leaf extract may be a useful treatment in rural communities plagued by diarrhea, namely in South Africa. ANTIOXIDANT Guava leaf extract was found to have antioxidant properties in a study published in May 2007 in "Wei Sheng Yan Jiu." Antioxidants are important because they can protect overall health on a general way. Antioxidants are compounds that are capable of scavenging free radicals from the body. Although free radicals are produced naturally during cellular metabolism, they can attach themselves to healthy cells and lead to cellular damage or death. GASTRIC CANCER

There is some evidence that points to guava leaf extract as a potential treatment for gastric cancer, according to the findings of a study published in 2011 in "Food Chemistry." The researchers found that guava leaf extract resulted in apoptosis, or the death of gastric cancer cells. GUAVA & CANCER Jul 23, 2011 | By Sam Lupica

Photo Credit Hemera Technologies/Photos.com/Getty Images The guava plant represents about 100 different varieties that grow in tropical regions. These shrubs and small trees are cultivated throughout the world but were originally indigenous to the tropics of North and South America. A constituent of guava, called lycopene, is responsible for the reddish color seen in many fruits such as tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit. Lycopene has been identified as a viable antiproliferative agent for the prevention and treatment of several types of cancers. PROSTATE CANCER There is a relationship between dietary intake, physical activity and prostate cancer, according to an article in the March 2011 issue of the "Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention." For this study, the researchers recruited 105 men, 35 diagnosed with prostate cancer and 70 without, who were used as a control group. Data on dietary intake, especially the consumption of lycopene, and physical activity were obtained using questionnaires. The results showed that those with prostate cancer had a considerably higher fat intake in their diets, whereas the control group consumed more fruits and vegetables, including guava. The authors found that consumption of lycopene from guava and other fruits reduced the incidence of prostate cancer by up to sevenfold. The study concluded that exercise, a diet high in lycopene and reducing fat intake reduced the risk of prostate cancer in men aged 45 years and older. God Can Help You Learn From This True Life Story A Prayer That Can Change Your Life www.LifesGreatestQuestion.com Sponsored Links ANDROGEN AND GUAVA EXTRACT The male hormone androgen is required for the proliferation of prostate cancer cells by activating growth pathways. A study included in the February 2010 issue of "Nutrition and Cancer" investigated the effect of an aqueous extract of guava on the growth of prostate cancer by interfering with androgen receptors on the surface of LNCaP cells, a model of prostate cancer. The researchers found that the guava extract was an effective inhibitor of androgen receptors and reduced the rate of growth in the experimental cell line. The study also determined that mice treated with 1.5 mg of guava extract per day significantly reduced the incidence of prostate cancer and that the guava extract was an effective agent for reducing the size of tumors of the prostate. LYCOPENE

The chemical composition of lycopene, a carotenoid in guava that has anticancer activities, is highly reactive toward oxygen free radicals, according to an article in the October 2008 issue of "Cancer Letters." The researchers found that lycopene isolated from guava reduces cancer risk through its antioxidant activities and by inducing apoptosis, or genetically programmed cell death, in cancer cells. The study concluded, however, that further clinical studies are necessary to fully understand lycopene's anticancer effects. ENZYMATIC ACTIVITIES An enzyme, known as NFkappaB, regulates the expression of several genes in an apoptotic pathway, which, in turn, regulates, cell proliferation of cellular death. A study in the September 2007 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" tested the anti-inflammatory effects of guava extract through its ability to regulate the concentration of NFkappaB using an experimental breast cancer cell line. The researchers found that an extract of guava contining 55 mcg per mL inhibited the growth breast cancer cells and their ability to metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body. Photo Credit Stockbyte/Stockbyte/Getty Images The skin is the largest organ in the human body and its condition speaks volumes about your health. Rashes, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and oily, dry and aged skin, may reflect stress, lack of exercise or a poor diet. Improving your skin's health is possible in a variety of ways, including adding more skinsupportive nutrients in your diet. Guava is a tropical fruit that tastes like a cross between a strawberry and a pear, and it provides several nutrients that support skin maintenance. Including it in your diet may help you make progress toward the beautiful complexion you want that is more than just skin deep. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VITAMIN C & GUAVA Jul 14, 2011 | By Melodie Anne Coffman

Photo Credit Medioimages/Photodisc/Photodisc/Getty Images Guavas are a tropical fruit often underrated for their nutritional value. During growth, guavas develop a rich vitamin C concentration. In fact, a serving of guava can provide as much as 250 percent of your recommended daily allowance, or RDA, for vitamin C. Adding guava slices to your breakfast or enjoying guava as a dessert after dinner, helps provide all of the essential vitamin C you need for the day. BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means your body doesn't store it and you must consume vitamin-C rich foods every day. Most commonly, vitamin C is known for its role in boosting your immune system by warding off foreign bacteria. Vitamin C acts like an antioxidant, fighting off free radicals that can permanently damage cells throughout your body. Additionally, this important vitamin helps make collagen, a structural part of veins, connective tissues, skin and more. Solution To Hair Loss Natural, Affordable and Permanent Hair Transplants. Save 20%. www.nuhart.com Sponsored Links VITAMIN C AND GUAVA When you think of vitamin C, the first thing that comes to mind may be citrus fruits, such as oranges or grapefruit, which are readily available everywhere you shop. You may need to shop around to find guavas, which provide more vitamin C than citrus fruits or many other types of produce. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, men need 90 mg of vitamin C daily, and women require 75 mg. A 1/2-cup or 4-ounce serving of guava provides approximately 188 mg of vitamin C, whereas the same serving of fresh orange has less than 50 mg. Since guavas have such a high vitamin C content, including them in your diet several times per week may help keep you healthy by invigorating your immune system. HANDLING OF GUAVA Vitamin C is relatively stable and withstands harsh handling procedures. Research published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in 2010 evaluated guava and the vitamin C content during storage, cleaning and preparation in restaurants. According to researchers, vitamin C content under usual storage conditions and handling procedures remains the same. Researchers noted only minimal, insignificant changes in vitamin C content by the time prepared guava reached restaurant customers. Since vitamin C in guava is very stable, you don't have to worry about losing it when you slice and dice the fruit. WAYS TO ENJOY GUAVA You can enjoy guava in a variety of ways, but make sure it is soft to the touch before consuming. The rind and seeds are also edible, but usually discarded before eating. While eating guava fresh in the summer is a refreshing treat, you can also cook it, which is common in Latin American cuisines. Guava nectar or puree is readily available at

your local grocery store, making a delicious addition to sauces, smoothies or salad dressings. Dried guava has minimal vitamin C content, since most of the water-soluble vitamins dissipate during water removal. GUAVA & CHOLESTEROL Jun 30, 2011 | By Jake Wayne

Photo Credit Brand X Pictures/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images Your cholesterol levels are one of the most often used metrics for predicting your risk of circulatory problems like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. This is in part due to its high reliability, and in part due to how easy it is to measure. One of the best things you can personally do to improve your heart health is to understand how the foods you eat -- such as guava fruit -affect your cholesterol levels. CHOLESTEROL BASICS Your body produces two kinds of cholesterol. LDL cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein, is the bad cholesterol. Though vital to tissue health, it also tends to clump up in your bloodstream and make your heart work harder for every beat. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, cleans the LDL out of your blood and improves your circulatory health. Your body makes LDL in response to saturated fat, and it makes HDL in response to unsaturated fat in your diet. GUAVA BASICS Guavas, or Psidium guajava, are a fist-sized fruit native to tropical regions throughout the Americas. Different variety of guavas have thick or thin skins and colors ranging from light green to yellow. The edible flesh of a guava might be white, yellow or different shades of red. You can eat guava raw and whole, or include it in a number of smoothie and dessert recipes. GUAVA AND CHOLESTEROL The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides nutrition information for tens of thousands of foods, including guava fruit. According to the USDA, a whole fruit contains just 0.1 g of saturated fat and 0.2 g of unsaturated fat. At fat levels this low, the effects of eating guava on your production of HDL and LDL are low. However, the dietary fiber content of guava can help your body's natural cleansing process -- which can reduce your blood serum LDL levels. TRIGLYCERIDES Although not chemically a cholesterol, triglycerides affect your circulatory health in the same way as LDL cholesterol and are included in the calculations for total cholesterol. Your body makes triglycerides in response to the presence of simple sugars in your diet. A whole guava contains about 5 g of simple sugars, which is enough to

raise your triglyceride levels slightly. This won't have a huge effect on your cholesterol count with one fruit, but eating several guavas each day could have a negative impact. GLYCEMIC INDEX VALUE OF GUAVA May 5, 2011 | By Jenna Cee

Photo Credit Guava / image by lefebvre_jonathan from Fotolia.com Guava is a highly nutritious green tropical fruit that is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. If you have diabetes or if you are familiar with low-carbohydrate diets, you may be familiar with the glycemic index. Despite the health benefits this fruit offers, you may be curious as to what kind of impact guava has on your blood sugar levels. GLYCEMIC INDEX The glycemic index is ranking system that rates the after-meal effect a food or beverage will have your on blood sugar levels. Foods ranked 70 and above are considered high glycemic foods, as they will raise your blood sugar rapidly and significantly. Low glycemic foods rank 55 and below and do not have as significant an impact on your blood sugar levels. Foods that rank between 56 and 69 have a moderate effect on your blood sugar. If you are a diabetic or a dieter who is trying to lose weight, you want to select foods that will not raise your blood sugar levels. In short, elevated blood sugar levels triggers insulin release, which promotes fat storage. Popular Slimming for 2012 SNL is composed of slimming & white ning in one capsule 1000mg. SNL . www.yumeimise.net Sponsored Links GLYCEMIC INDEX FOR GUAVA Guava has a glycemic index ranking of 78 and is considered a high glycemic food. Guava ranks significantly higher than other fruits, as most fruits rank from 30 to 50. Apples, grapefruit, grapes, oranges and pears all score below 50 on the glycemic index. Only watermelon, which scores 72, plus or minus 13, ranks close to guava. This ranking suggests the guava will raise your blood sugar levels significantly and is far from an ideal choice for diabetics and those trying to manage or lose weight. VERY LOW GLYCEMIC LOAD Dr. Jonny Bowden, Ph.D. and Clinical Nutrition Specialist, in his book "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth," states that guava is one of the very best fruits that you can eat. Dr. Bowden also explains that the glycemic index score of 78 is a very inaccurate measure of guava's affect on your blood sugar. A food's "glycemic load" is a much more accurate measurement of its effect on your blood sugar and insulin levels. Unlike the glycemic index, Bowden explains, the glycemic load accounts for how many carbohydrates a food has, as well as the factors that comprise the glycemic index. Guava's glycemic load is 4 out of 40. This measurement indicates that guava actually has little to no impact on your blood glucose levels. HEALTH BENEFITS

Dr. Bowden lists guava as one of the most nutritious foods that you can eat because it has very high amounts of lycopene. Guava has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable at a similar serving size. Lycopene is a carotenoid plant protein and powerful antioxidant that may help prevent prostate cancer and breast cancer. According to the Alabama Cooperative Extension, lycopene may even benefit those with "full blown" prostate cancer. Guava is also rich in potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium. A single cup of guava has 9 g of dietary fiber. Foods that are high in fiber generally have very marginal effects on blood sugar levels. HOW TO DRY HOME GROWN GUAVA LEAVES FOR TEA May 10, 2012 | By Gryphon Adams
Photo Credit Stockbyte/Stockbyte/Getty Images Guava trees, Psidium guajava Linnaeus, grow throughout Brazil and Mexico. Although they are known in the U.S. primarily for their fruit, guava leaves have a history of use by indigenous people for traditional medicines. Guava leaves are a rich source of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect your cells by scavenging free radicals, substances that can damage them. As with any herb, consult your doctor before using guava leaf tea. GUAVA LEAF TEA USES Brazilian researchers tested an extract from guava leaves and concluded that it's active against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella. They published their findings in the January/February 2008 issue of the "Journal of the Institute of Tropical Medicine of So Paulo." Brazilians who don't have access or funds for antibiotics use guava leaf tea for gastroenteritis and child diarrhea. Consult your doctor about any medical concerns and before taking guava leaf tea or any other herb. K. Lim, author of Edible Medicinal And Non Medicinal Plants, although further research is needed. To reduce drying time, cut young, unblemished guava leaves in the afternoon on a warm day. The plants have the most moisture in their leaves in the morning. DRYING GUAVA LEAVES For drying small batches of guava leaves, tie several leaf stems together with twine and put them in a paper sack with the ends of the stems extending from the bag's opening. Close the bag around the guava leaves by tying twine around the bag on the stems, or with a rubber band. Use a hooks or hangers with clothespins to hang the guava leaves in a warm, dark, dry place such as a closet or attic. Dry large batches of guava leaves flat on window screens. Placing small wooden blocks between the trays makes them stackable to save space. Drying will take three to four weeks, depending on the humidity. Dry them fully, until they feel dry to the touch. GUAVA LEAF TEA CONSIDERATIONS It has a cardiac depressant effect, according to Raintree Nutrition's Tropical Plant Database. If you have a heart condition or take any heart medication, talk to your doctor about guava leaf tea before trying it. If you're

hypoglycemic, don't use guava leaf tea because it lowers blood sugar. Always talk to your doctor about any medical concerns. Attempting to self-diagnose or self-treat health problems can have serious consequences. This article tells about the benefits of drinking guava leaf tea and I believe this is also good for free range chickens as herbal supplement to hasten growth and prevent diseases. We are now applying this guava leaf decoction to our organic free range chickens. The benefits of guava leaf tea doesnt seem to be too much info on this subject in Westerners society or health news. But in Asia, making teas out of fruit leaves are common. Such leaves include loquats, pomegranate, and guava. Loquats are good for coughs. Pomegranate good for stomach problems, it is also used as a dieters tea. Which means it could help suppress your appetite.

MULTIPLE BENEFITS OF GUAVA LEAF EXTRACT POWDER

Guava Leaf, anti-oxidizing effect, makes you healthier Guava is the origin of a tropical America and South-East Asia. Its leaf has been used as health tea. Guava Leaf has a character of strong Superoxide-dismutase-like activity. Because decreasing of free radicals makes anti-oxidizing effect in the body, it can prevent arterial sclerosis, thrombosis, cataract and inhibit senescence of body and skin (1). Also, polyphenolic compounds contained in Guava Leaf have an effect to suspend proceeding of peroxidation reaction in the living body which can be expected to prevent various chronic diseases (2). Guava Leaf, anti-allergic effect, improves atopic dermatitis One of factors for atopic dermatitis and other allergies are histamine release from cells. So that it is believed that the inhibition of histamine release from cells can cure atopic dermatitis and other allergies. Guava leaf has an inhibitory effect for the release of histamine from cells (4). Guava Leaf, a-amylase inhibitor, reduces body fat Obesity is a phenomenon of over-accumulation of body fat and is said to be a risk factor of chronic diseases. Guava leaf has a function to inactive a-amylase as an its inhibitor and to inhibit digestive absorption of lipid as hpase inhibitory effect. However, Guava leaf does not inhibit protease (5). Therefore, because of Guava leafs inhibitory activity of decomposition of starch to glucose, it inhibits absorption of glucose into body and inhibits conversion of

glucose to body fat. It is believed that Guava leaf is effective for weight control and reducing body fat. Guava Leaf, anti-diabetic effect, reduces blood sugar Guava leaf has been used as a folk remedy for diabetes and there are studies of Guava leaf for anti-diabetic effect. Guava leaf inhibits the increase in the plasma level of blood sugar, but not to effect on the plasma level of insulin (3). To make your own guava leaf tea Infusion: Pour 1 cup of lightly boiled water into 1 - 2 teaspoon of herbal leaves in teapot or heat resistant glassware. I like to use a French Press to brew my herbal teas. Let it steep for 3 - 5 minutes. For medicinal usage, steep longer for 15-30 minutes. It should be kept in refrigerator and good to drink the next couple of days. For Free range chickens' supplement Use 2 tablespoons of chopped young guava leaves for every 1 liter of water and soft boil for about 15 minutes. Let it cool overnight and serve to chickens the following morning as their regular water supply.

Magic Guava Leaves

There are many things one hears about as old wives remedies in the Philippines. If the baby chokes or coughs, old yayas cough themselves and say ahem, ahem as if to absorb the babys cough. Old fashioned yayas put a damp piece of cotton on the babys head when they have hiccups. This actually works, but I have no idea why. I had also heard that boiling guava leaves and using the water as a rinse after giving birth was good for you. Again, I had no idea whyI had also heard that when boys are circumcised in the province ( a right of passage at 8 years old) that they were made to chew on guava leaves and as soon as the deed was done, spit out the chewed up leaf on the wound. Women who give birth in the province normally are asked to sit in a tub of boiled guava leaves to close the wounds and to speed up healing.

Giving birth to my second baby was a more painful ordeal than my first. For some reason it took me longer to get back on my feet, the post operative pain as worse ( I delivered via C-section) and contractions while breast feeding hurt more. I was also having problems with the way my scar was healing. For some reason, a part of it stayed wetnot infected, but it never dried up. For weeks I tried the doctors order of Betadine and Bactroban on the wound. Every time it would almost form a scab, the wet part would stick to the gauze or my underwear and pull it off again.

I was complaining about my problem to a friend when she mentioned she had the same problem. Her yaya had told her to boil guava leaves and use the water as a final rinse after bathing. She claimed that within 3 days, it dried up. I thought Id give it a try. When I mentioned this to my helpers at home, they looked at me and gave me a knowing smile. My cook said that she had used that remedy when giving birth to all 4 of her children. Even my driver knew of the remedy, offering to bring me guava leaves the next day from the tree in his house. I texted my doctor to ask her if it was okay to try this. To my surprise she said that there is actual medical evidence to prove that this remedy works because of the anti bacterial properties of guava leaves.

My lovely driver brought the leaves the next day as promised. Not just any leaves would work, they have to be newly sprouted leaves, closest to the fruit. I had them boiled and used the murky brown water it became as my final wash. For extra good measure, my cook suggested placing the leaf on the wound directly for a few minutes. The next day I had forgotten about the guava wash. But as I was dressing up I noticed the wound had dried up. I couldnt believe it. The depressed part of my scar, covered in weird white wet stuff had dried up. I showed it to my husband and he couldnt believe it either. I saw my doctor the next day and showed it to her, she allowed me to continue using the guava leaf as a final rinse until the wound had dried up. In 5 days proper scabs and formed and after two weeks, the scabs fell off revealing the neat pink scar.

I found out from a tita of mine that my grandfather, who was her gynecologist had told her to use guava leaves as a rinse when she had her babies in the 60s. I couldnt believe that that advise had come from him, as he was known to be forward thinking in the field of ob-gyne in the Philippines. There is a very good reason traditional remedies are still around- they really do work. Of course before trying this remedy, its best to consult your doctor. Dont discount the wonders of age old remedies.
