    TIMELINE
    Marco Polo was born on 15 September in the year 1254. If he was alive today he would be turning 758 years old next Saturday. When he was 17 years old (1271) he went on a big journey with his father and his uncle. It took 24 years and they travelled approximately 24,000km (That is 1,000km per year). Marco Polo died when he was 69 years old in the year 1323.

    Marco Polo could speak at least 4 languages. He married a lady called Donata and had 3 daughters. Marco Polo is famous because he travelled and lived in the Mongol Empire (now known as China). He was allowed to return to his hometown of Venice by agreeing to escort a princess to Persia for her wedding. When Marco Polo returned to Venice he was captured and put in prison. When Marco Polo was in prison he wrote a book about his adventures. His book was very popular and published in many languages (it is still available to buy now).
