SCHEDULING DETAILED DAY TO DAY PLANNING OF OPERATION S IS CALLED SCHEDULING. DAY TO DAY IMPLIES A SHORT TIME HORIZON AND NOT THE LITERAL MEANING. SCHEDULING IS OFTEN DONE ON A DAILY BASIS. THE LONG RANGE ANG INTERMEDIATE PLANS ARE OF MUCH USE AT HIGHER OR MIDDLE LEVELS SCHEDULING IS OF IMMEDIATE SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE LOWR MANGERIAL AND FIRST LINE SUPERVISORY POSITIONS.

Scheduling.
PRODUCTION SCHEDULING OPERATES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF FLEXIBILITIES OF THE AGGREGATE INTERMEDIATE RANGE PLAN. IN THE PROJECT TYPE OF PRODUCTION SYSTEM ,NETWORK ANALYSIS HELPS IN PALNNING AND CONTROLLING THE COMPONENT JOBS.

EVERYTHING CAN BE PLANNED MUCH AHEAD OF TIME

SCHEDULING IN JOB-SHOP TYPE PRODUCTION THE JOB-SHOP TYPE OF PRODUCTION SYSTEM IS MORE CONCERNED WITH DAY TO DAY SCHEDULING. EACH JOB HAS A VARIETY OF OPERATIONS TO BE PERFORMED. THE VARIETY OF JOBS AND OPERATIONS TO BE DONE ON THEM. SCHEDULING INVOLVES BASICALLY:

Steps of Scheduling
ASSIDGNING DIFFERENT JOBS TO DIFFERENT FACILITIES. (Shop Loading) SEQUENCING THE JOBS AND THE OPERATIONS AT A FACILITY OR ON A MACHINE,SO AS TO ACHIEVE THE PRODUCTION DEPARTMENTS. ( Based on production shop objectives) MONITORING THE ACHIEVEMENT AND ACCORDINGLY REVISING THE SCHEDULING OR CHANGING THE PRIORITIES OF JOBS SO AS TO RECTIFY THE DEVIATION (Control)

SHOP LOADING
THE SHOP LOADING IS THAT IF TWO OR MORE FACILITIES ARE EQUALLY CAPABLE OF PERFORMING THE SAME JOB OR SET OF JOBS AND IF THE DIFFERENT FACILITIES TAKE DIFFERENT TIMES TO COMPLETE THE SAME JOB AND HAVE DIFFERENT PRODUCTION CAPACITY THE LOGIC IS TO Assign first and then Sequence the jobs IF SUCH CHOICE DOES NOT EXIST SHOP LOADING PROBLEM IS TO CHECK AVAILABLE CAPACITY AND THEN SEQUENCE

ASSIGNMENT

(Shop Loading)

THIS TECHNIQUE OF ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM CAN BE VERY USEFUL IN LOADING. If two or more machines/facilities are capable of doing the same job if the different facilities take different times to complete the job and have different total production capacities The first task would be to assign the jobs and then sequencing would be next step

SEQUENCING OR PRIORITISATION
DECIDING WHICH JOB SHOULD GO TO WHICH WORK CENTER,IT IS ALSO NECESSARY TO DECIDE ON THE SEQUENCE IN WHICH THE JOBS ARE TO BE PROCEEDED IN ANY WORK CENTER.

THE PRIORITIES CAN BE DECIDED BASED UPON ONE OR A NUMBER OF CRITERIA.

OBJECTIVES OF SEQUENCING
COMPLETING BY DUE DATE.

UILIZING THE MACHINERY AND SUCH OTHER INVESTMENTS TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT POSSIBLE. UILIZING THE MANPOER CAPACITY TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT POSSIBLE.
MINIMISING THE WORKING CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN INVENTORIES OF SEMIPROCESSED MATERIALS.

SCHEDULING IN MASS,CONTINUOUS
THE SCHEDULING ASPECTS MENTIONED SO FAR HAVE BEEN CONCERNED WITH THE JOBSHOP(OPEN AND CLOSE) TYPE OF PRODUCTION. FOR A MASS /ASSEMBLY LINE PRODUCTION(CONTINUOUS TYPE) THE PLANNING PROBLEM IS LINE BALANCING- THE FLOW IS WITH REFERENCE IS INVENTORY OF WIP AND SPACE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT IT IS NET WORK ANALYSIS THROUGH USE OF CPM AD PERTTHE FLOW IS WITH REFERENCE TO TIME

SCHEDULING
IN BOTH THE TIME HORIZONSINTERMEDIATE AND SHORT-TERM IS ONE OF SETTING THE RATE OF PRODUCTION FROM THE LINE AND ARRANGING THE VARIOUS PRODUCTION CENTERS ON THE LINE ACCORDINGLY. LINE BALANCING WOULD BE HELPFUL IN EQUALIZING THE OUTPUT RATES FROM THE VARIOUS WORK POINTS ON THE MASS PRODUTION LINE AND IN REDUCING THE IDLE-TIME OF LABOR.

PROJECT TYPE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

IN A PRODUCTION TYPE OF PRODUCTION SYSYTEM ,WHERE ONE COMPLEX UNIT OR ITEM IS TO BE PRODUCED INVOLVING A NUMBER OF OPERATIONS. MANY OF THEM TO BE DONE ONE AFTER THE OTHER INA SEQUENCE DICTED BY TECHNOLOGY OR IMITATIONS OF RESOURCES. THE PRODUCT DEVELOPING ITS SHAPE AND GETTING VALUE ADDED AS THE TIME FLOWS.

THE NETWORK ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES SUCH AS PERT/CPM ARE QUITE USEFUL IN SCHEDULING MONITORING ANG CONTROL

OF PRODUCTION.

WHILE IN CONTINOUS OR LINE PRODUCTION THE FLOW IS WITH RESPECT TO S[ACE IN THE PROJECT TYPE PRODUCTION THE FLOW IS WITH RESPECT TO TIME.

LINE OF BALANCING
THERE IS ONE VARIATION OF THE PROJECT TYPE PRODUCTION. A SYSYTEM WHERE THE PROJECT CONSISITS OF PRODUCING A SINGLE BATCH OF PRODUCTS WHERE THE DELIVERY OF THE PRODUCT IS NOT AT ONE POINT IN TIME. BUT IS SPREAD OVER MANY INTERVALS OF TIME ACCORDING TO A PRIOR-AGREES ACHEDULE BETWEEN THE MANUFACTURER AND CUSTOMER.

FOR LOB THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS NEEDED

THE CONTRACTED SCHEDULE OF DELIVERY. THE KEY OPERATIONS, IN THE MAKING OF THE PRODUCT,WHICH NEED TO BE CONTROLED. THE SEQUENCE IN WHICH THE KEY EVENTS ARE CONNECTED. THE EXPECTED/ OBSERVED LEAD TIMES OF THESE EVENTS WITH RESPECT TO THE COMPLETION OF THE FINAL EVEVET,(DELIVERY OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT).

LOB HELPS THE TOP OR MIDDLE-LEVEL PRODUCTION MANAGER/PLANNER IN IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS.

SUCH AS PRODUCTION BOTTLENECKS, SUPLIER-FAILURES,EXCESS INVENTORIES OF RAW MATERIALS AND WORK IN PROGRESS.

THE LOB TECHNIQUE OF MONITERING CAN BE QUITE USEFUL IN THE CASE OF SNGLE BATCH PRODUCTION OF AN IMPORTANT PRODUCT .

SCHEDULING IN SERVICES
TIME ASPECTS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN SERVICES. INFACT PUNCTUALITY OR TIMELINES IS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES IN SERVICE QUALITY. WHEN MANUFACTUREING STARTED GETTING CHARACTERISTICS OF SERVICE A WHOLE NEW PARADIGM ANG MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY OF JUST- IN TIME PRODUCTION CAME INTO BEING.
