THE DOG NAMED DUKE (Q1.) Chuck was going great guns before he faced a major setback.

How did his life change all of a sudden? (Ans) Chuck was driving home one day when he met with a serious accident. He was then taken to the hospital where it was discovered that his left side was completely paralysed. (Q2.) What did the men who came to see Chuck in the hospital say to him? (Ans) The men who came to see Chuck in the hospital asked him to take a year off from work. They told him that they would create a desk job for him at the company headquarters (Q3.) How did Duke die? (Ans) Duke met with a road accident. Later, he was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries (Q4.) Were the Hoopers' new neighbours aware of the story of Duke and Chuck? What did they see every day? (Ans) No, the people who stayed around the new house where the Hoopers shifted later did not know the story of Duke and his master. The neighbours just saw a person who looked like a huge mechanical giant being pulled by a fiery dog who acted as if he exercised a right over his master. (Q5.) When Duke was brought inside the house after he met with an accident, Marcy observed something. What did she notice? In 1953, Hooper was a favoured young man. How? Explain. (Ans) In the year 1953, Chuck Hooper was really going strong before he met with an accident. He was highly competitive but had a cheerful countenance. He was quite tall and had represented his university football team during his college days. Later, Hooper worked as a zone sales manager for a chemical company. He was married to a woman named Marcy and everything was going in his favour. (Q8.) They said that they would create a desk job for Hooper at headquarters.

The men who came to see Hooper decided to create a desk job for him at the company headquarters because Hooper had met with a serious accident. The brain injury had completely paralysed his left side. Hooper could hardly move after the accident. (Q9.) Duke was an extraordinary dog. What special qualities did he exhibit to justify this? Discuss. (Ans) Duke was definitely a special dog who had the ability to discern things. When he was brought back from the kennel, he sprang at his master on seeing him, but when he saw that his master was unfit and was struggling to maintain his balance, he never jumped on him again. Duke really cared for Hooper. There were times when Hooper behaved indifferently when Duke tried to nudge or fondle him, but the dog never growled. Finally, it was with Duke's assistance that Hooper started to move and recover. Duke was a faithful dog who always stood by his master. (Q10.) What problems did Chuck present when he returned to the company headquarters? (Ans) When Chuck returned to his company headquarters, the people thought that as he was really struggling so much after his accident, he would not be able to handle his old job. They felt that Chuck could not do much as he was hardly able to move. Moreover, Chuck had decided to work for only an hour a day till then. (Q11.) Chuck and Duke complemented each other very well. (Ans) Both Chuck and Duke had great faith in each other. Duke always kept goading his master and Chuck also never disappointed him. Initially, they always did their daily exercise together before Chuck became fit enough to walk himself. After doing a full days work, Chuck did not go for the physiotherapy programme. Instead, he completely turned to Duke. Sometimes, Chuck fell down while walking. When this happened, Duke did not show any sympathy. He simply waited for his master to get up. This showed that the two understood each other very well. (Q12.) What qualities did Chuck and Duke exhibit that helped them come a long way? (Ans) Both Chuck and Duke showed some great qualities which helped them come a long way. Duke goaded his master to start walking and Chuck too did not disappoint his pet. The two made a slow beginning but they never thought of giving up. They showed a lot of patience before Chuck finally started to move on his own. Many a times, Chuck tripped in the dark and fell down. When this

happened, Duke did not console with his master. Instead, he waited till his master finally got up and stood on both his feet. The master and his dog kept persevering even when the going got tough. The miraculous recovery of Chuck would not have been possible if both he and Duke were not determined. It was their steely determination that helped Duke and Chuck achieve their goal. Finally, it can be said that Duke and Chuck complemented each other very well. They worked in tandem and theirs was a combined effort.
