Yonkers to crack down on jaywalkers YONKERS -- Thinking of crossing the street against the light? Not so fast.

Police will begin cracking down on jaywalkers, first with warnings, then summonses, as part of a new Operation Safe Cross program that will also place pedestrian warning signs at some of the citys busiest intersections. Mayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner Charles Gardner announced the initiative Friday. The city recently installed Safe Cross signs at Nepperhan Avenue and New Main Street and plans to post more along Nepperhan Avenue, South Broadway, Warburton Avenue and at the intersection of Central Park Avenue and Clark Street across from Empire City Casino. Police say just over half of the accident investigations they have conducted this year have been pedestrian-related and involved serious injury or death.
