<ODYSSEUS AND THE LOTUS EATERS> (Odysseus and his crew are in a ship) Odysseus: Oh no! Zeus has sent a storm! Crew: Its been 9 days already! And weve been swept through this land! Odysseus: The Land of the Lotus eaters! (The Natives enters) Natives: Here, eat this fruit! (And they took the fruit and ate it) Crew: I want more! Odysseus: No! you cant! We have to go back! Crew: NO! I want more! Odysseus: Theres nothing I can do, I have to drag you back! (And so, Odysseus drag his men back to the ship and locked them up, Because thats the only way to get them off the land)

<ODYSSEUS AND POLYPHEMUS> (Odysseus and his men then sail to the land of the Cyclopes, a rough and uncivilized race of one-eyed giants. After making a meal of wild goats captured on an island offshore, they cross to the mainland. ) Crew: WOW! A cave full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese! Odysseus, Lets get them and hurry off! Odysseus: NO, I decide to linger. ( The caves inhabitant soon returnsit is the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. ) Polyphemus: Come and enjoy yourself. For I will imprison you for future meals. (evil laughs)

(Odysseus wants to take his sword to Polyphemus right then, but he knows that only Polyphemus is strong enough to move the rock that he has placed across the door of his cave. Odysseus thus devises and executes a plan. The next day, while Polyphemus is outside pasturing his sheep,) Odysseus: Aha! a wooden staff ! (When Polyphemus returns) Odysseus: Come on, lets drink some wine I brought along from the ship. Polyphemus: What is your name? Odysseus: Nobody (Polyphemus collapses with intoxication.) ( Odysseus and a select group of his men drive the red-hot staff into his eye. Polyphemus wakes with a shriek, and his neighbors come to see what is wrong, but they leave as soon as he calls out,) Polyphemus: Nobodys killing me (When morning comes), Odysseus: Lets leave this place once and for all. (Safe on board their ships and with Polyphemuss flock on board as well, Odysseus calls to land) I shall harden it in the fire.

Odysseus: I am Odysseus! (With his former prisoners now out of reach, the blind giant lifts up a prayer to his father, Poseidon, calling for vengeance on Odysseus.)

<ODYSSEUS AND AELOUS> (The Achaeans sail from the land of the Cyclopes to the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.) Aeolus: Here. Odysseus. This is a bag containing all of the winds. (And he stirs up a westerly wind to guide Odysseus and his crew home. Within ten days, they are in sight of Ithaca, but) Crew: I think Aelous has secretly given Odysseus a fortune in gold and silver, I shall tear the bag open. (The winds escape and stir up a storm that brings Odysseus and his men back to Aeolia.) Odysseus: Were back to Aeolia! Aelous! Help us! Aelous: No, The Gods must have certainly hated you by now and wish to do you harm.

<ODYSSEUS AND CIRCE> (Odysseus and his men travel to Aeaea, home of the beautiful witch-goddess Circe.) Crew: Some of the men were turn into pigs by Circe! What shall we do?? Odysseus: I shall go and rescue them! (Odysseus was on his way to find Circe) Hermes: Eat this herb, MOLY to protect you from Circes potions and then lunge at her when she tries to strike you with her sword. (Odysseus followed Hermes instructions, overpowering Circe and forcing her to change his men back to their human forms. Odysseus soon becomes Circes lover, and he and his men live with her in luxury for a year.) Crew: Let us continue the voyage home, Odysseus! Odysseus: All right! Circe, tell me the way back to Ithaca. Circe: You must sail to Hades, the realm of the dead, to speak with the spirit of Tiresias, a blind prophet who will tell you how to get home. (The next morning, Odysseus rouses his men for the imminent departure.) Crew: Elpenor has gotten drunk the previous night, and he slept on the roof. And today, when the men are out marching, he fell and broke his neck! Odysseus explains to his men the course that they must take, which they are displeased to learn is rather meandering.
