Two xanthone compounds, β-mangostin and α-mangostin, were isolated from the n-hexane extract of manggis root (Garcinia mangostana, Linn.). β-mangostin was isolated as yellow needle crystals weighing 0.2714 g and having a melting point of 170–173°C. α-mangostin was isolated as a yellow amorphous powder weighing 0.0458 g and having a melting point of 172–174°C. Both compounds were isolated using column chromatography and purified through recrystallization with a n-hexane:aceton mixture. Their structures were determined based on analysis with UV, IR, 1H

TWO MANGOSTIN COMPOUNDS FROM N-HEXANE EXTRACT OF MANGGIS ROOT (Garcinia mangostana, Linn.
) FROM NGANJUK, EAST JAVA
Name : Prima Agusti Lukis NRP : 1407 100 030 Advisor Lecturer : Prof. Dr. Taslim Ersam Abstract Garcinia mengostana, Linn. (manggis) is one of species from family Clusiaceae, which has been reported as source of prenylated and oxygenated xanthones. Two diprenylated xanthones compounds has been isolated from n-hexane extract of manggis root, namely -mangostin (1) as yellow needle crystal (0,2714 g) with melting point 170 173 C and -mangostin (2) as yellow amorphorus powder (0,0458 g) with melting point 172 174 C. Those two compounds were isolated by using column chromatography methodes. The purification was done by recrystallization using same mixture n-hexane : aceton. Structure of those compounds were established based on UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, DEPT 135, HMBC and were compared with the same compound which have been reported by previous researcher.
