TRYPANOSOME SPECIES AND ASSOCIATED CYTOKINE Animal African Trypanosomasis affects several animal species and is a major cause

of animal mortality. Infection results in a chronic disease characterized by anaemia and immunosuppression. Studies have showed that a balance between pro- and counter-inflammatory cytokines is central to disease outcome. Cytokines play different roles in the control of infection. The genetic background of the trypanosome also influences disease outcome. Different species, subspecies or strains may cause a different disease in similar hosts thus a different cytokine profile. Most studies carried out to establish the cytokine profiles in AAT infected animals have been carried out using experimental infections basing on T. congolense infections. This doesnt portray what happens in natural field conditions and the biological distinctions between trypanosome species could front a different immune response. In addition, there is no current documented information about the prevalence of trypanosome species in cattle in Gulu district. The main purpose of this study is to investigate trypanosome species and associated cytokine profiles in infected cattle in Paicho and Lakwana subcounties. Results from this study will generate information about the prevalence of the trypanosome species responsible for AAT. Identification of these species will enable Veterinarians and policy makers to assess the severity of AT in Gulu district. This research will also enhance understanding of cytokine profiles of AAT which will provide an insight into animal immune responses associated with disease pathogenesis.
