Students received backpacks full of school supplies! This year's Back to School Resource Fair took place on August 10, capping off an exciting summer of fun programming for the youth served by University Settlement! Hundreds of families braved the rainy day as staff and volunteers distributed 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students living in the Broadway / Slavic Village community. Though the fairground was wet, that did not keep the kids away from the pony rides, bouncy houses and carnival games. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment provided by the City of Cleveland's ShoWagon youth performance troupe. Nearly 30 community agencies and businesses shared information in the resource tent. This year, the Back to School Resource Fair would not have been possible without the tremendous support of Eaton Corporation, BJ's Foundation, R.J. Management, the Daniel W. LoPresti '03 Student Philanthropic Board, the GROW Foundation, Baldwin Wallace University, Hyland Software, Bank of America, ArcelorMittal, Walmart, Kiwanis of Independence, PNC Bank, SGD Design and Faber Castell. We would also like to thank the Cleveland Indians for their ticket donation, allowing our youth and their families to attend an Indians game this fall!

The Fourth Annual Taste of Slavic Village: Another Success!

University Settlement would like to thank everyone who helped make the Fourth Annual Taste of Slavic Village a tremendous success! The event raised a total of $30,000 to benefit the programming of University Settlement. Over two hundred attendees enjoyed entertainment by DJ Kishka and Emcee Mark "Munch" Bishop, and sampled food from a number of local eateries. A wide array of exciting Silent Auction items tempted those in attendance, made possible by several generous donors, bringing in over $2,000 alone!

Our Partners

On Wednesday, November 7, University Settlement will "Point Forward" to kick off the Magic Johnson Foundation's 21st Anniversary Celebration! The event will center around the theme "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss. The event will include a resource fair, dinner, and family oriented

activities/festivities. The resource fair will feature some of University Settlement's partners, including Magic Johnson Bridgescape, Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland, PBS, Tech Corp, Aids Taskforce, Tri-C Able/GED, RET 3, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio and Slavic Village Development. Community Empowerment Centers, or CECs, are an integral pillar of the Foundation's work, CECs provide ethnically diverse urban communities access to resources and programming that educate, empower, and strengthen individuals through the innovative use of technology. In 2004, Cleveland proudly entered into a partnership with the Foundation as a recipient of Ohio's only CEC, opened at University Settlement. The CEC provides a host of services that promote academic achievement, social and cultural enrichment, health education and awareness, employment, and economic development. Join us to see some of the outstanding work done at Ohio's only CEC on Wednesday, November 7, from 5:00-7:00 pm, for Point Forward Day. Back to Top

A Treasured Volunteer & Friend

Elaine Kukawka is a long-time volunteer and wife of former University Settlement board member, the late Ed Kukawka. This year, University Settlement had the opportunity to recognize Elaine for her support on two separate occasions. We presented Elaine with our annual Community Impact Award at the Taste of Slavic Village, recognizing the exceptional impact she has had on the lives of youth served by University Settlement.

Greater Cleveland Volunteers' Joy Banish and Elaine Kukawka Additionally, the Center for Community Solutions and Greater Cleveland Volunteers selected Elaine as a 2012 Most Treasured Volunteer, a distinction recognizing just four other individuals this year! This award, again recognizing Elaine's continued contribution to the youth of the Settlement, was presented at the City Club at a special breakfast for the award winners. Ed passed away in February of 2011. While this was a sad time, Elaine immediately connected with us to ensure his work continued and contributions remembered by establishing "Ed's Fund for Kids," dedicated to supporting youth at Settlement, an aspect of our work that was very

meaningful for Ed. Currently, Elaine brings in food from Panera each week, which feeds the kids and seniors we serve each day. Elaine is modest, and as she puts it, "I just do what I do." Back to Top
