Lesson Title: Pattern Fish Date: April 10, 2012

Required Materials: Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris, copies of fish template, blank paper, manipulatives, markers/crayons/stickers, Standards Addressed: 4.OA.5. Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule. Identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. Objectives Students will be able to correctly predict the next step in the pattern during the reading of Pattern Fish. Students will be able to work together as a team to create a pattern with their bodies. Students will be able to create a pattern on their fish independently and identify the pattern rule they used. Students will be able to extend their pattern making skills to creating patterns with manipulatives and identifying the pattern rules used. Students will be able to correctly identify the pattern rule on each page during the second reading of Pattern Fish. Introduction: 1. To continue instruction on the topic, we will read Pattern Fish by Trudy Harris aloud to the whole class. Students will be encouraged to predict the next part of the pattern as we read. Procedures: 1. After finishing the picture book, we will encourage students to create a whole class pattern based on hair color, shirt color, types of shoes, etc. 2. Next, we will encourage students to create their patterned fish using the template attached at the end of this document. The students will be able to determine the medium used (stamps, markers, stickers, crayons, dot markers, etc.). 3. After they create their fish have the students identify the pattern they used and write it on the back of their fish. Students may then turn to a partner and share the pattern they made and compare and contrast the different patterns. 4. Then using manipulatives (unifix cubes, pattern blocks, plastic bears) students will be encouraged to create more patterns following the rule of their fish pattern. o Students can also make new patterns as well and can discuss the pattern they created. Closure As a class, we will reread the picture book Pattern Fish. Students will be asked to write down the pattern rule on their whiteboards and share their answer with the teacher after he/she finishes reading that page. Assessment: Pattern prediction during the first reading of Pattern Fish

Potential Roadblocks While reading the book, make sure that all students can hear and see the pictures especially since the patterns are visual and auditory. During the whole class pattern making, closely monitor noise level and make sure students are working together efficiently. May be better to split the class into two groups to make patterns and then they can compare. Make sure that students have a clear idea of what the procedure is when getting materials for the pattern fish they will create and the manipulatives. Set clear guidelines for using the manipulatives to minimize off-task behaviors and use.
