Read Aloud Lesson Plan Michelle Terry Theme: Animals 10/25/11 Grade Level: 1st

I. Objectives: a. The students will know what a story retell is. b. The students will understand that in order to retell a story they need to remember the sequence of the story. c. The students will be able to retell the story in correct order using diecuts of the animals with few prompts. II. AR Frameworks: a. AR.1.OV.1.10 (OV.1.1.10) Speaking for literary response and expression: Tell and retell stories providing the characters, setting, problem, events, and resolution in logical order, with or without prompts. b. AR.1.OV.2.4 (OV.2.1.4) Listening and responding to literature: Listen to literature and respond appropriately, including predicting, connecting, questioning, and discussing the text. Common Core Curriculum Standards: c. CC.1.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. d. CC.1.SL.5 Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Common Core Curriculum Standards: III. Materials: a. There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly Retold by Simms Taback b. Die-cuts of each animal and old lady for every student c. Sandwich bag for every student IV. Procedure: a. *Schema Activation: Have any of you ever accidentally swallowed something like gum, or a cough drop? How did it feel? Was it weird? Now imagine swallowing a fly. How do you think that would feel? In todays story we are going to read about an Old Lady who swallows several different animals, including a fly. Lets see what all she swallows in the book.

b. *Rest of Procedure: i. Read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly 1. Stop after every animal and ask the students how they imagined swallowing it would feel. 2. Then ask what made her swallow that animal? (The spider to catch the fly, the bird to catch the spider, etc.) ii. Finish reading the story. iii. Have the students help go over the animals that the Old Lady swallowed in the book. Write these down in order for the students to see iv. Show the students the activity. v. Explain that they will color their die cuts and on the back of each animal sequence them in the correct order. vi. After each animal is colored and numbered they will be able to retell the story and put the animals in the Old Ladys stomach (sandwich bag) in the order that she swallows them. vii. Ask a student to volunteer to retell their story using his/her die-cuts. c. *Closure: Show the students the correct sequence for the animals the Old Lady swallows. Then retell the story as a class and put each animal in her stomach when theyve been swallowed. V. Evaluation of Student Learning: a. The students will be able to retell the story using their die-cuts with little prompting and few mistakes. b. I will observe as the students sequence their die cuts to determine if they have ordered them correctly. c. After listening to the students retell the story I will determine how accurate they were and see how many prompts they needed to effectively retell the story.
