Plan Topic: 1984, Power in Government Time: 95 minutes Materials Needed: Poster board with Rules, Notetaker, Dystopian Societies Powerpoint, 1984 Books from the bookstore Subject/Grade Level: Regular English/12th CCS Standards: ELA. 11-12. RI. 3 ELA. 11-12. RI. 5 ELL Standards: ELL. V. 1. LI-3. ELL. V. 1. HI-5. Terminal Objective: After recognizing the logical fallacies that may exist within a power-seeking governments communication, students will be able to create their own modern-day propaganda poster that mirrors the type of messages the government in 1984 relayed to its citizens. Language Objective: After reading Chapter 1 of 1984, students will be able to demonstrate comprehension by rewriting their interpretation of the chapter in their own words. ELL: Students will be able to summarize Chapter 1 of 1984 (ELL. V. 1. LI-3) Blooms: Included in Objectives Objective #1: Students will analyze a quote and apply it to their own thoughts about their power (Analyze) Anticipatory Set #1: Bell Work Read the following quote. Write a 3-5 sentence paragraph to answer the questions below. Individual rights are not subject to a public vote the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual). What do you believe are your own individual rights? Are these rights ever suppressed?

Objective #2: SWBAT understand and participate in the implementation of the New Classroom Rules by modeling the required behaviors. (Apply)

Activity#2: Students will read the rules aloud. They will be required to comply with the rules until the teacher gives further notice. Objective #3: SWBAT recall information from yesterdays lesson. (Knowledge) Activity #3: Students will engage in a group discussion about Indicative and Deductive Reasoning. Objective #4: SWBAT rephrase their definition of Logical Fallacy Vocabulary Words after a brief lecture. (Understand) Activity #4: Students will define Begging the Question and write their own example. Objective #5: SWBAT watch a video and create a related propaganda poster that will be presented to the class. (Evaluate, Create) Activity #5: Students will work in groups to create a poster inspired from one of the videos in class. Students will present it to the class. Objective #6: SWBAT recall one work of literature that is considered to be part of the Dystopia Genre. Activity #6: Students will discuss with a partner one of the works mentioned in class, or another work that they believe is part of this genre. Objective #7: SWBAT Summarize the first chapter of 1984 Activity #7: Students will read and understand the first chapter of 1984 in pairs and then write a summary of the events. Closure: Students will respond to the following question: How does your propaganda poster mirror the similar ideas behind the propaganda mentioned in 1984? Assessment: Students will create their own government issued propaganda poster. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of logical fallacies by writing answers on slates. Students will answer in paragraph form: How does your propaganda poster mirror the similar ideas behind the propaganda mentioned in 1984? Your lesson plan must be for 50 minutes. Then select the 25 minutes you want to present.
