PREVALENCE OF BLINDNESS AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AMONG ADULTS AND CHILDREN IN HAITI

Estimated number of adults who are functionally blind (1% of the total population i.e. 1% of 9,719,932) = 97,199; Estimated number of adults with low vision (3% of total population, i.e. 3% of 9,719,932) = 291,598; Estimated number of children who are functionally blind (1 in every thousand children of school age) = 3,440 Estimated number of children with low vision (3 in every thousand children of school age) = 10,320

History of SHAA
The Societe Haitienne dAide aux Aveugles (SHAA) was founded on February 23rd, 1952; and is an Organisational Member of the Caribbean Council for the Blind (CCB).

Prevention of blindness Promoting the rights and duties of persons who are blind and visually impaired SHAA is an inclusive organisation

Programmes/Services offered
Inclusive Education Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) Blindness Prevention Specialised Library Services Social and Medical Assistance Micro-Credit Services

Main Activities undertaken (on a monthly/ yearly basis): Associative life - at SHAA, there are dierent groups for women and the young Community Motivation Pedagogical Supervision Social and Medical Activities
