GET CONNECTED!

Nurses and health care professionals are born advocates. Think of the many people you speak to face-to-face during the day patients, family members, doctors, co-workers and ancillary staff. You provide experienced knowledge at the bedside. You have no trouble advocating for your patients when its needed. That same knowledge and the ability to advocate are desperately needed at the Capitol. The passage of Right to Work legislation has greatly harmed nurses ability to advocate for their patients through collective bargaining. Now legislators must be held accountable and pass a safe patient care bill that will help health care professionals protect their patients. We must advocate with our legislators face-to-face about what we see every day in our workplace. Nurses are working short-staffed while hospitals focus on building programs and the bottom line. This is not a time for being timid. Its time to take your advocacy skills to the Capitol and make a difference for Michigans future. At the 2013 Michigan Nurses MARCH!, youll hear from nurses just like you who have stepped out and made that connection. These RNs will provide helpful information from their own experiences to use in your visits. During the morning, well give you the latest tools to take with you to the legislative offices and information about the current political situation in Michigan. Well prepare you to take that step toward meeting with legislators face-to-face and then, together, well march to meetings with the legislators from your individual districts. By the end of the day, youll have the confidence and advocacy skills to seek out your legislators both at home and at the Capitol. Its time for our senators and representatives to hear what health care professionals have to say. Your voice is needed!

How We Advocate for Ourselves and Our Patients (panel discussion)

The thought of talking to legislators face-to-face is challenging for many health care professionals. The MNA nurses on the panel (see panel members advocating in the pictures below) will share the tips theyve learned to be effective representatives of the nursing profession at the Capitol. From testifying before committees to legislative office visits; talking with the media and speaking before a crowd of thousands, our members will take you through the lessons theyve learned to help you raise your voice for nursing issues!

(Left) Charlotte Folkersma, RN, a nurse from Chippewa War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, speaks against Right to Work legislation during a rally at the Capitol. (Top right) Joyce Stein, RN, from the University of Michigan Health System, speaks at a press conference about the health concerns surrounding polluted air in Michigan. (Lower right) Kelly Brunk, RN, a nurse from Sparrow Hospital, shares with the media her concerns about patients who will be adversely affected by Right to Work legislation.
