    A faithful woman's husband died in Ephesus. As she mourned in his vault, she met a Roman guard and had an affair with him. Later, one of the thieves crucified with her husband was discovered missing from his cross, with only his body remaining. The guard was punished for his negligence. The people were confused to see her husband's body hanging on an empty cross instead. The story teaches that it is better to "hang the dead than kill the living."
