Problem 7.26, Felder and Rousseau

Liquid water is fed to a boiler at 24C and 10 bar and is converted at constant pressure to
saturated steam. Use the steam tables to calculate H

A (kJ /kg) for this process, and then

calculate the heat input required to produce 15,000 m
3
/h of steam at the exiting conditions.
Assume that the kinetic energy of the entering liquid is negligible and that the steam is
discharged through a 15-cm ID pipe.

SOLUTION

From Table B.5 for water at 24C the specific enthalpy is 100.6 kJ /kg and that for saturated
steam is 2776.2 kJ /kg (and the temperature is 179.9C) from Table B.6. Thus the enthalpy
change is

kg
kJ
H 6 . 2675 6 . 100 2 . 2776

= = A

Also from Table B.6 we see that the specific volume of the saturated steam is 0.1943 m
3
/kg. So
the mass flow rate of the steam is
