Periodic Breathing

1) Cheyne-Stokes Breathing
Apnea and Hyperapnea go on cyclically

Causes of Cheyne- Strokes Breathing

1) A long delay occurs for transport of blood from the lungs to the brain. Eg.: Severe cardiac failure 2) Negative feedback gain in the respiratory control areas. This type of breathing occurs mainly in patients with brain damage. 3) Loss of automaticity of the respiratory center

Cheyne- Strokes Breathing

It occurs in
A Physiological Conditions 1. Healthy infants 2. Healthy adults during deep sleep. 3. Voluntary Hyperventilation 4. At higher altitude B Pathological conditions 1. Due to hypoxia 2. Ureamia 3. Cardiac failure 4. Drugs poisoning - Morphine 5. Raised Intracranial Pressure

Biots Breathing
Seen in cases of severe brain damage, meningitis. Does not occur in physiological conditions. 3-4 cycles of normal breathing followed by abrupt onset of apnea & again abrupt onset of deep breathing
