Nervous System

Objective:
1. Identify the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, protection from disease, and movement, control, and coordination) and describe ways that these systems interact with each other. 2. Explain how human organ systems help maintain human health.

Activities
Introduction (10 minutes) Iclickers ACT Prep Stamp The class will begin with an ACT Prep questions that the students will have the first five minutes to answer. While the students are working on their warm up I will pass out the Iclickers. After five minutes I will have the students buzz in their answers, and then we will discuss how they came to their answers. They will record five sentences in their warm up, which will be stamped for credit. Main Teaching Activities (35 minutes) Prezi Presentation: (http://prezi.com/dbhiplim65sj/central-nervoussystem/?auth_key=0f69dc3f8dec8f4381b383309ea15e0592b6b25c&kw=viewdbhiplim65sj&rc=ref-9845201) Video (5 minutes) Guided Notes During this portion of the class the students will follow along on their guided notes, as I explain the central nervous system and peripheral nervous systems. Throughout the Prezi presentation I will be asking the students Iclicker questions, which will help to reinforce important concepts. The Iclickers will also help me to monitor the students understanding, and see which concepts I may need to revisit. Conclusion (15 minutes) Describe concluding activities that will: Worksheet Return Clickers Final Question Students will begin working on their summary work sheet, which will help them to review the days lesson. The worksheet will be due by the end of the hour, and consist of both multiple choice and short answer responses. While the students are working on the worksheet, I will collect their Iclickers. During the last 5 minutes of the class period, I will summarize the classes lesson and provide some thought provoking questions for the next day.

Central Nervous System: Function: The central nervous system relays messages, processes
information, and analyzes information Is composed of two parts: 1. Brain 2. Spinal Cord The BRAIN is divided into three separate components Cerebrum

Brain Stem

Cerebellum

1. Cerebrum
Is the LARGEST and most prominent region of the human brain Controls INTELLIGENCE , LEARNING ,and JUDGMENT Is divided into four regions Parietal Lobe Frontal Lobe

Temporal Lobe

2. Cerebellum
Controls the COORDINATION and BALANCE so that the body can move gracefully and efficiently.

3. The Brain Stem

CONNECTS THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD, TO HELP RELAY MESSGES BETWEEN THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD .

The Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is very similar to the brain stem, but it runs down the whole back connecting the brain to the BODY.

Nervous System Worksheet

(For each response write 3-5 sentences explaining how you obtained your answer)

1. I help to relay messages that have been sent to the brain. I am very small, and have multiple names. Who am I and how do you know?

2. In your own words come up with an analogy, for the function of the Nervous System. (ex: for the Joints in the body, you could say a Door Hinge)

3. As a gymnast I spend a lot of time on the balance beam, doing cartwheels and round offs. Which part of my brain do you think I use the most during my practice, and how did you know?
