This is a chant which became recently popular in our school and in our parishes. It reminds us of the principle and foundation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatiusthat all things must be used to love and serve the Lord, because all things come from Him, are imbued with Him, and find full perfection when used for Him. Young Inquirers in the Inquirer

Inquirer the multi-platform organ of the Philippines, asking the questions no one else dares to. On February 15, 2013, the members of Eaglet, the official organ of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School, were invited to the headquarters of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. We were warmly welcomed by Mrs. Connie Kalagayan, Head of Corporate Affairs. Ms. Bianca Kasilang, our very informative tour facilitator, led us to a conference room where she gave us a brief background about the company and its projects and segments today. The Inquirer was founded on December 9, 1985 by Eugenia Apostol and Max Soliven. During the briefing, we were told about the many segments of what the company produces. We listened more intently when she discussed the details about the spreadsheet, since this is also what we are producing. According the Ms. Kasilang, although a myriad of articles are submitted daily, only those that pass the strict requirements are published. The article must have an impact on our society, it must be accurate and unbiased, and it must be relevant in todays day and age. Afterwards, we were toured around the printing press and the graphic design room. Impressive amounts of paper and ink were proudly stacked near the entrance, and the functions of each piece of machinery were explained to us. Indeed, we learned a lot from that field trip and became so inspired to be better journalists! Were also excited to be featured in their broadsheet too! After the tour, we rode back to the Ateneo de Manila campus, where the official Eaglet Night was held until 10:30 in the evening to celebrate our year together as young campus journalists and our future success as budding writers for the greater glory of God.

A Message from the University President
I am happy to note your efforts to understand and express amare et servire Domino in your young lives. The kind of love and service, which we are invited to give, may not always mean grand gestures. But because it is the Lord we love and serve, then however small our gesture in the eyes of the world, it is grand in the eyes of the Lord. You can render service without love. But that would be the gesture of slaves. You can profess love without service. But that would only be the plastic gesture of pretenders. Strive then to root your service in love. Learn to love the Lord because love is learned, not just given. You can never invent love or order it around; love must be free. Mean your love then. Love the Lord who has always meant his love for you. Express your love in service. Ignatius Loyola tells us that love is expressed in deeds not just in words. Do the love then. Serve the Lord by serving others, especially the poor, in whose eyes we see His eyes as well. To love and serve the Lord, may this indeed be enough for us; may this be our joy.

A Message from the Headmaster
My Dear Young Ateneans, I am happy to hear that the theme of the Eaglets issue is To love and Serve the Lord. This is a common Ignatian phrase. For St. Ignatius, loving the Lord Jesus Christ is the same as serving Him in our neighbour. At the start of the school year, we pray and hope that we receive this grace of Divine Love, and a more passionate desire to serve Him always. Among the priorities of Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ, our University President, he places the highest value on our Mission and Identity. We are a Catholic, Jesuit, and a Filipino school. This is our identity as a community. We are all sent by Christ to love and serve others especially those who are in need. We pursue excellence in everything that we do not for its own sake nor to gain worldly honour, but to glorify God most of all. Last October, Pope Benedict XVI canonized a Filipino saint, a Cebuano, Blessed Pedro Calungsod. Pedro was a missionary catechist and a sacristan to a Jesuit missionary priest, Blessed Diego Luis San Vitores, who founded the first Catholic Church in Guam. Both of them were missioned among the Chamorros, and were martyred by the local tribe. Pope John Paul II described the young visayan as one with deep faith and marked with a strong Eucharistic and Marian devotion. We pray for the same graces that St. Pedro received -- the grace of profound faith and deep devotion that led him to courageously spread the Word of God among the Chamorros. May the good Lord bless us always!

A Message from the Asst. Headmaster for Academic Affairs (MS)
Love and serve the Lord Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thus, the Holy Mass concludes. But how do we love and serve the Lord? Surprisingly, the opportunities are all around us, in our families, our communities, in school and everywhere we go. There are many occasions for service and love. We love and serve the Lord when: we share what we have with those who have less, give food to the hungry, time to those who are lonely, a joyful visit to those who are sick or just being around a friend burdened with the loss of a love one. When we forgive one another and make peace, we do Jesus will. People who truly experience the love of Jesus cannot keep that joy within himself. In like manner, we cannot share what we do not have. We cannot share Jesus when He is not truly in our hearts. For the Ateneans, one is not too young to share Christs love by serving others - significant ways no matter how small. Our writers in this edition have beautiful anecdotes and shared activities to inspire many of us. These stories tell about serving God every day of your lives. May the Lord bless you for being a willing instrument of Gods love and peace.

A Message from the Asst. Headmaster for Student Affairs
Every time I listen to the song Amare et Servire, whether it be the version of Fr. Manoling Francisco or that of Bukas Palad, I cannot help but be moved by the lyrics and the movements of the melody. And it is not only I who feel this way about this particular song. Others too, feel moved, as if compelled to do something. And I guess it is plain and clear that this something is to be of service to others the battle cry of every Atenean. I remember our university president, Fr. Jett Villarin, mentioning something along the same lines not so long ago. In his Rizal sesquicentennial speech last school year about nation building, he said that as a people, we cannot build what we do not love and we cannot love what is not ours- something that is undoubtedly true at all levels. For how can you even consider doing something good or special to someone whom you do not even love, let alone someone you do not know? Indeed, knowing begets loving; and loving begets serving. And for many months now, I still have not come across an argument that persuades me to think otherwisenot until now. Writing this message, I got myself into thinking: perhaps it is entirely possible, on very few occasions, to actually be of service even if love is out of the equation. Though not entirely, I think this can be said about writing, for the simple reason that writing can sometimes be a thankless job. Allow me to reiterate what I mentioned in my address to one of the publications group last school year: If one ventures to write, he may risk exposing himself to other people. This is all the more true when one writes from the heart. One risks exposing his soul and even subjects it to other peoples scrutiny and review. In a way, you risk appearing like a fool through the works that you have written. In a way, a writer may feel more than once, that he is not loved or he is not loved enough in this line of work. But despite this, a true writer still pens ideas and still serves his publics by doing what he loves and knows best. In a way, this is what I meant when I said that it is entirely possible that you serve others who do not necessarily love your writing, and by extension, you. Having said this, I just would like to underscore how much admiration I have for the staff of the Eaglet this school year. I want them to know this early, that I truly consider them a brave and dedicated lot. Even if pats on the back are hard-earned and praises seldom come within hearing distance in this discipline, I still pray that they continue to be the voice of the community. Amare et servire May they stay true to their first love and believe that writing is the unique brand of service of every Eaglet staffer. More power and God bless.

Outstanding Ateneans for the Greater Glory of God

Congratulations to the Ateneo Grade School Chess Varsity for bagging the Overall Championship, First Runner-up and individual awards at the recently-concluded 2012 Philippine Athletic Youth Association (PAYA) Chess Tournament held in La Salle Green Hills. The AGS team is composed of Lorenzo Thomas Lazaro, Jose Marco Caniones, Hans Feliciano, Kevin Joseph Ramirez, Joaquin Brian Villa, Carlo Gabriel Pastor and Coach Roland Perez, NM.

We congratulate Ateneo de Manila Grade 5 students Christopher Jose Carlos, Zachary Orfiano, Jose Enrique Guevara, Yves Gabriel Lazaro and Jose Carlos Montemayor for garnering the First, Second and Third Honors at the 2013 Metrobank-MTAPDepEd Math Challenge (National Capital Region) held in JCSGO Testing Center, Cubao on 19 January 2013.

Maio Castaneda, aiming high in Varsity Football Team and the Varsity Golf Team
Maio Castaneda of 3-Marikudo is one of the most exceptional athletes in the Grade 3 level being part of both the Varsity Football Team and the Varsity Golf Team. Maio who is part of the Ateneo Midgets 2 team finished a rare 3-peat in the recently concluded JGFP ICTSI InterSchool Jungolf tournament at the challenging Ayala Greenfields Golf Course in Laguna. Maio teamed up with Riggs Illescas and Miles Conding who posted dominating performances in the elimination and the final rounds. In the final round, Maio who was a participant in the Callaway Junior World in San Diego, California contributed with a birdieeagle spiked performance putting the Ateneo Blue Eaglets unreachable in the final leg of the team competition. Ateneo dominated throughout the five rounds against teams from La Salle Greenhills, Xavier School, and La Salle Zobel. final game lifting his team to a finals appearance and a runnerup finish. AGSCOM Leadership Seminar

What is the role of a leader? This is the question that I should be able to answer at the end of our Quarterly Leadership Seminar organized by the Office of Student Activities under Mrs. Gargaritano and Campus Ministry and Social Involvement Office under Mr. Regino and Ms. Rivera. The latest leadership seminar started with a recollection where we, presidents and vice presidents, learned to lead a class in honor of the Lord. We first divided ourselves into groups, each being led by a teacher. Our groups teacher was Ms.Perez who helped us play a game. This game involved one student being a wolf, another a shepherd, and the rest being sheep. The sheep had to avoid getting caught by the wolf while still holding on to the shepherd by forming a chain. We had so much fun that some even fell down on each other not crying but laughing. We then had a reflection that helped us learn that the shepherd is God, the wolf is sin and the sheep are each and every one of us. But one of our group mates said that we too could be like the shepherd and protect our classmates from sinning. After this reflection, we went inside the Auditorium and prayed. We each held one candle and each group, one by one, brought our candles beside a cross. Then we sang and danced One Way Jesus which was tauught to us by Mrs. Salvaa. After which, we went to the Fermin Hall Assembly Area to eat our lunch. We then met our kuyas who are studying in the Loyola Schools and followed them to the college. We first played a game where we had to form a circle, held hands with one another and tried to pass multiple hula-hoops without using our hands while listening to music and when this music stops and you have a hula-hoop, you get eliminated. After which we went to the Leong Hall and had an activity were we formed a circle and took off our shoes. Our kuyas told us to count starting from the first boy and memorize the number we got. Afterwards, we then arranged ourselves according to our birthdate. We then had to count again and memorize our number. We then tried to find out how we can repeat all these

steps in the smallest amount of time and did it in less than 1 minute. We then played another game where we divided ourselves into 4 groups and competed to see who can put the highest amount of balls possible into our teams hula-hoop. 100 balls were placed in a hula-hoop in the middle of the room and we then competed to get the highest amount of balls. We then thought of crazy ideas like stealing the other teams hula-hoops, stuffing all the balls in our shirts, and even stealing other teams balls. Round after round we noticed that when we start a round and the student from college who acted as the host, we noticed that when he gives instructions on what to do, he put the emphasis on the phrase highest amount of balls possible. We then decided that he was trying to tell us to get all 100 hundred balls in our hoops by sharing all the balls. We then reflected on that idea of working together and sharing. We then played our final game where some of our fellow students in the AGS acted as leaders to try and help us form a triangle using a rope. We thought that it was going to be easy but then our kuyas told us to wrap our handkerchiefs around our heads to act as a blindfold. After 30 minutes of not seeing the world, we were finally able to take off our blindfolds and look at the shape we made which was indeed a triangle. We then reflected and said that we should be the students who are not blindfolded and guide our classmates.

So what did I learn? I learned that a leader should care for his classmates in the same way that Jesus cares for us and help them become better people.

by Ms. Patricia Ana S. Valera The Open House is one of the most awaited activities in Prep. It is the last grade level activity before they go to the next grade level. Traditionally, the Open House shows the best works of the boys through exhibits and portfolios. However, this year, the Open House was spent a little differently. Last Feb. 8-14, 2013, Prep opened its doors to the Prep parents and showed them a snippet of what happens in the classroom every day. Most parents took time off from work to go to their sons class on the day of their Open House. Mrs. Bengzon and Mrs. Navarrete oriented the parents, told them what to expect, and led the parents to the KEMC Projection Rooms B and C where the Open House was held. Both teachers and boys were excited to see and interact with their parents. The classes went by smoothly as the boys, and even the parents, were participative. At the end of the day, the boys were delighted to have spent time with their loving parents on a school day.

PREP OPEN HOUSE

Bigay Puso in Prep

The Bigay Puso was one of the most fulfilling activities that the Prep boys experienced this year. Last December 14, children from Olandes came to Ateneo and spent time with them. With the help of the parents, games were conducted in the classroom and the children were given time to eat together and play at the playground. The day ended with our boys giving their early Christmas gifts to the Olandes children. Truly, this activity reflected what we always emphasize to the boys doing loving actions all the time and being persons-forothers.

Bigay Puso in Grade 1
by Mrs. Marielle Celestino Last February 14, the Love Day, Grade One students shared their Love with 260 children from Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School at the Ateneo Grade School. The Grade One students did this through the Bigay Puso Fellowship Program. Since July, the Grade One students have been offering a part of their allowance for their Bigay Puso partners (in support of the Blueplate for Better Learning Feeding Program of which MLQ Elem. School is a part of). On that day, the students played, ate and shared stories with the children who came over.

Pangkalahatang Pagtatalaga ng mga KAB Iskawt

ni Bb. Abigail D. Castro Noong nakaraang Setyembre 14 at 21, 2012 ay naganap ang Pangkalahatang Pagtatalaga o Investiture ng mga batang KAB Iskawts ng Ikalawang Baitang. Sa seremonyang ito ay ang pormal na magiging kasapi ng kilusang Iskawting ang mga bata at ang kanilang pagtupad sa mga pangako at batas nito. Sinimulan ang programa sa pagmartsa ng mga Iskawts ayon sa kanilang seksyon na sinundan ng mga pinuno ng Ateneo Grade School. Pinamunuan nina Padre Unson at Padre Salanio ang Pambungad na Panalangin. Si Bb. Serion, ang guro sa Musika sa ikalawang baitang naman ang namuno sa pag-awit ng Lupang Hinirang. Nagbigay ng Bating Pagtanggap si Gng. Josie Martinez, ang Pangalawang Punong Guro para sa Mababang Paaralan ng Ateneo. Sama-samang nakinig ang lahat ng mga bata, mga guro, mga magulang at mga panauhin. Sa taong ito rin ay may pitong gurong itinalaga bilang mga Kawan Leaders. Sila ay sina: Bb. Yatco at Gng. Mabasa mula sa Prep, Bb. Bautista mula sa Unang Baitang, Bb. Songco at Bb. Sarmiento mula sa Ikalawang Baitang at sina Bb. Balsa at Bb. Gamboa ng Ikatlong Baitang. Pinamunuan ni Bb. Castro, ang Commissioner ng KAB Scouting, ang panunumpa. Matapos ng mga guro ay sinimulan na ang ganap na pagtatalaga sa mga batang KAB Iskawt. Sa pamamagitan ng mga KAB Iskawt sa ikatlong baitang ay isa-isang nasindihan ang mga kandilang magpapaalala sa mga KABs ng kanilang pagtupad sa bawat pangako at batas ng Iskawting. Sinundan ito ng pagbabasbas ni Padre Saniel sa mga alampay kasabay ang panalangin

na tutupad ang mga bata sa kanilang mga ipinangako. Isa-isang nilapitan ng mga magulang ang kanilang mga anak para sa galian sa alampay. Masayang isinuot ng mga magulang ang alampay at kalabaw sa kanilang mga anak upang tuluyan nang makumpleto ang uniporme ng mga KABs. Tanda ito na sila ay naitalaga na at ganap nang mga Iskawt. Nang matapos na ang lahat ng mga bata ay sabay-sabay silang tumayo at buong pagmamalaking binigkas ang Pangako, Batas at Sawikain ng mga KAB Iskawt. Kasunod nito ay pinamunuan ni G. Rhod Darrell Ines, ang Pinuno ng GLPC ang panunumpa ng mga magulang ng mga KAB Iskawt. Nagbigay naman si G. Jervy Robles, ang Pangalawang Punong-Guro para sa mga Gawaing Pang Mag-aaral upang magbigay ng ilang mga hamon at salitang inspirasyon para sa mga KABs. Tunay na naging mas malinaw at makabuluhan ang gagampanang papel ng mga KAB Iskawt. Masiglang kinanta ng mga bata ang This Little KAB-bing Light of Mine. Isa ito sa kanilang paboritong awitin at ipinahahayag ng awit na pananatilihin nilang may sindi o nag-aalab ang liwanag ng samahang Iskawting. Huling nagbigay ng ilang mga paalala at pasasalamat si Bb. Castro sa pagtatapos ng programa. Dito na rin nabanggit ang mga paghahanda para sa Weaning Night ng mga bata sa Pebrero. Natapos ang programa sa pagbibigay-pugay sa watawat ng Pilipinas at isa-isa ng lumabas ang mga KAB Iskawts bitbit ang isang dimalilimutang karanasan ng ganap na pagtatalaga bilang mga KAB Iskawts.

by Ms. Eva Marie B. Guevara It has been quoted that Younger boys responded better to leadership and program efforts than older boys. A Weaning Night Activity accompanied by an overnight camp is provided by Kawan leaders and adult scouts for KAB Scouts to enjoy themselves, have small tasks and accomplish a set of minimum responsibility. With this in mind, the Grades 2 and 3 had their most-awaited activity which is the Weaning Night entitled Kab-Ilang ako sa Iskawting held last February 8-9, 2013. Around 520 Grade 2 Kab Scouts and 20 Grade 3 Kab Scouts attended this overnight event. It started with a Cook-Out Activity at 1:30 pm in the Old Prep Area. The basic need for a person to live is food. It is but essential for a Kab Scout to build a fire and cook simple food to survive. In this activity, Kabs had a first hand experience to grill hotdogs and marshmallows on small fire. It was a fun, yet fulfilling afternoon. As a formal opening of the event, the KABs assembled at the grassy area in front of the Singson Hall at around 3:45 pm. Just like a regular Scouting assembly, the program started with a prayer, singing of the national anthem and the recitation of the Kab Scout Promise and Kab Scout Law. Ms. Abby Castro, Kab Scout Commissioner gave the welcome remarks both for the KABs and parents. Wearing their complete Kab Scout uniform with dignity, the boys were excited to know what was in store for them on this overnight event. After the formal opening of the camp at exactly 4:00 pm, the first activity was done through Hiking around the Ateneo campus. The Kabs passed by the Irwin Theater, turned right on a downhill road beside the College covered courts and turned left to a narrow path fronting the Sonolux Building. An uphill stairs awaited them which finally lead them to the Church of GESU. The Kabs stayed together as Kawans to rest for 10 minutes at the grassy

The Weaning Night: Kabilang ako sa Iskawting

area beside the church. The Hiking experience of the Kabs lasted for an hour. At 5:00 pm, they were back to their classrooms to rest, fix things and spend dinner with their parents/ companions. Their Kawan leaders discussed with them the Camp Rules that will be observed for the duration of the overnight activity. Afterwards, they spent the remaining time to practice their class yell and cheer for the Campfire Program. At 7:00 pm, the Kabs assembled at the Grade School covered courts for the Campfire Program. It aims to develop talent by giving Kab Scouts opportunity to participate in various activities, sharing experiences and chance to build a team spirit through group involvement. The night were highlighted by the lighting of the fire, singing of songs, recitation of cheers/yells per Kawan, doing Scout claps and most importantly, the sharing of the Story of the Fire by the Boy Scouts. In the morning, base activities for the first 7 sections in a form of a Treasure Hunt were conducted at the Grade 4 covered courts. Each color group member per section had to cooperate and work fast together to finish a series of tasks. Outdoor games held at the David Hall East Field were done simultaneously with the last 6 sections. All base activities and outdoor games ended at 10:30 am. Awarding ceremony immediately followed. Color groups per section that showed outstanding performance during these activities in terms of cooperation, discipline and participation were given ribbons or medals. These medals were stapled on their Kawan group flags which they were very proud to show off. The Weaning Night Event ended with the closing remarks of Ms. Abby Castro, Kab Scout Commissioner. Indeed, the event entitled Kab-Ilang ako sa Iskawting provided an answer for our Grades 2 and 3 boys extra energy. The experience gave them an opportunity to work and play together. It was a happy and wonderful experience for the Kab Scouts. The Grades 2 and 3 Kawan leaders were successful in developing a happy spirit in the Kawan.

Beginning the month of February, one would hear this line from a song being played in all the grade three classrooms every morning. It is the time of the year when students and teachers practice singing this song, in preparation for the Grade Three Crossing Over Ceremony.

And as we part, you taught us well.

The Grade Three Crossing Over Ceremony started in school year 2000 2001 as a ritual to celebrate the end of the grade three students Primary School days and a new beginning in the Middle School. It is a much awaited event in the lives of our dear grade three students as they graduate from the Primary School.

You showed the way, well not forget you

During the ceremony, a chosen grade three boy delivers a speech, inspired by all the wonderful and meaningful experiences in the Primary School. As a symbol of their readiness to move up to the Middle School, the Grade Three Level Coordinator turns them over to the Grade Four Level Coordinator, after which the grade three students literally cross from the Primary School grounds over to the Middle School grounds. And as a sign of welcome, they are given mementos, by the grade four students, which will guide them as they face more opportunities and challenges in the Middle School.

Another highlight of the ceremony is the tucking in of the polo shirts which means that as Middle School students, they are expected to be more mature and responsible. But the most special part of this memorable event is when the grade three boys sing their crossing over song, Like an Eagle. Parents, teachers and guests cant help but feel emotional as the grade three students look back, give thanks, and make a promise to spread their wings and fly.

Like an eagle, we will fly.

On this day, the Primary School teachers send off the grade three students with the hope and trust that they will fly high like an eagle and do well in the Middle School.

When Alberto del Rosario asked the hundreds of gradeschoolers in front of him if China was being a bully, the reply reverberated around the auditorium: Yes! The Foreign Affairs Secretary was at Ateneo Grade School in Quezon City before more than 500 sixth-graders, discussing the ongoing dispute between the Philippines and China over territories in the West Philippine (South China) Sea. The students laughed and groaned when Del Rosario explained that territorial disputes could someday affect freedom of navigation in the sprawling waters and block the supply of popular products and gadgets like Playstations and computers. What is ours is ours and we should stand up to protect what is ours, Del Rosario told his young listeners, who included his grandson. China is claiming what is ours. That is why there is a dispute. But, he stressed, China is a friend, close neighbor and regional partner. We are, in fact, committed to undertake all that is possible to cultivate positive relations with China in spite of this issue in the South China Sea or West Philippine Sea, he said. For about an hour, Del Rosario played teacher to the amused kids, using simple language and colorful visual aids like maps and animation to explain the complex, decades-long territorial rifts that some governments fear could spark Asias next war. Learning experience Del Rosarios lecture underscores the governments efforts to galvanize public support behind its aggressive campaign to assert Philippine sovereignty in territories where, he said, Chinese ships have recently intruded, sparking new tensions. Del Rosario, who has been on the frontlines of that diplomatic campaign, won adherents among his bubbly audience on Wednesday. Many students welcomed the lecture, saying it made them understand an important subject that has a bearing on their and the countrys future. I think this would greatly affect us because we are all Filipinos. Its our country no matter what age we are, said 12-year-old Jesus Miguel Yulo. If we are going to be future politicians, we can learn from this experience on whats happening in our country. Matthew Dayrit said the easy-to-understand lesson gave me a new perspective on this issue. Its very important for us to know this issue because our country will be greatly affected by what happens between us and China, said Dayrit, 12. Its good for people of my age to know so we can understand how democracy works and I know in the end it can be resolved peacefully. Mikko Carlo Vitug, 11, said the topic helped us students know more and helped us understand why the territory should be ours. In a comprehensive presentation that could be called South China Sea 101, Del Rosario compared complicated issues with things the students could easily relate with. To give the grade schoolers a quick grasp of complex terms, acronyms and concepts such as the UNCLOS (a 1982 treaty that governs the use of offshore areas by coastal states) and the Exclusive Economic Zone (a 200 nautical-mile stretch of sea from a coast where a country has an exclusive right to exploit resources but where foreign ships could freely pass through), Del Rosario likened the countrys territorial areas to a house, where neighbors could not trespass, and the EEZ to a surrounding yard. President Benigno Aquino IIIs administration, Del Rosario told the students, has been trying to resolve the territorial disputes through a rules-based approach, comparing the international norms that govern countries to the rules students follow in school to avoid confusion and discord. [W]hen we say rules-based approach, we mean, number one, to solve the issue peacefully, without threat or use of force. Number two, to apply international law, specifi-

cally UNCLOS. Three, to abide by the ASEAN Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, or the DOC. And four, to discuss with various claimants in order to take into account their interests. Too much The students seemed surprised when told that China has been claiming the entire South China Sea and the islands, islets and sand bars in it. When the Foreign Affairs Secretary asked if that claim was too much, the students nodded in agreement. Explaining the areas under contention like the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal, del Rosario said the number of Chinese vessels deployed at the shoal once reached about 90, against only two Philippine vessels. While the Philippines will do what it can to assert its territorial rights, del Rosario said, the country has a weak military. But the government, he said, was taking steps to develop a minimum capability to secure and defend the countrys sovereignty. At that point, he asked the students if Chinas actions constituted bullying. He got a resounding reply in the affirmative. Del Rosario said that a crucial time when the country is trying to defend its territory, Filipinos should speak with one voice, citing the Presidents call during his State of the Nation Address on July 23, 2012. There are those who say that we should let Bajo de Masinloc go, we should avoid the trouble. But if someone entered your yard and told you he owned it, would you agree? Would it be right to give away that which is rightfully ours? I think you already know the answer to that question, Del Rosario told the students. He concluded by asking what the young, bright students could do to help. You are helping by being present here, you are helping by understanding what is discussed here today, and you are helping by taking a strong stand with the government to defend what is ours. So please be helpful, Del Rosario said. Advance the nations interest. And be a hero, he added. By being so, you will greatly earn for yourself the countrys gratitude. BM, GMA News

ROBLES PICKED 20 students IN OUR BATCH TO GO TO KOREA. OUR TEACHER COMPANIONS WERE MR. ROBLES, MRS. GARGARITANO AND MRS. SANTOS. I KNEW THAT EVERYDAY WAS GOING TO BE A CHALLENGE BECAUSE OF THE NEW THINGS WE WERE GOING TO BE OPENED TO - NEW RELIGION, NEW FOOD, new WEATHER, ETC. ONCE WE GOT TO KOREA, ALL OF US WERE SO EXCITED FOR THE PLANS AHEAD OF US. WE WERE ALSO EAGER TO FEEL THE WEATHER. When WE GOT OUT OF THE AIRPORT, IT WAS ABOUT 2 DEGREES celsius. OUR FOSTER HOMES WERE SO KIND AND GENEROUS. THEY TREATED US AS LIKE WE WERE FAMILY.THEY SERVEd US BREAKFAST, WASHed OUR CLOTHES AND EVEN GaVE US SNACKS FOR THE TRIP. WHEN WE WERE IN THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY, WE WERE ABLE TO MEET THE PHILIPPINE AMBASSADOR, Mr. LUIS T CRUZ. HE TOLD US THE HISTORY OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF SOUTH KOREA AND THE PHILIPPINES. WHEN WE WERE IN LOTTE WORLD OUR KOREAN BUDDieS COULD EASILY GET LOST. WE HAD TO ALWAYS FIND WHERE THEY WENT. WE ALSO WENT ON THRILLING RIDES LIKE GIANT LOOP. An Interview with Fr. Arevalo

According to Father Catalino Arevalo, S.J., St Pedro Calungsod was a great inspiration for all the Filipino youth. This is because Pedro encouraged others to believe and to preach about Jesus to other non-believers. He spent all his time either praying or teaching Catechism. He was willing to leave his homeland just to share the Good News to outsiders. He also shared his energy, his talents (heck, even his life) to spread the Word of God. Over 100,000 people all over the Philippines rejoiced when Pedro became a Saint. In Ateneo, we had our own little procession in the chapel. After the Mass we went to the Heritage room to see a striking portrait of San Pedro followed by artworks of all grade levels about Pedros life. After that we had a feast and before we left home, we thought to ourselves how fortunate we are to have a saint like him.

Reece Reyes, the Vice President of 5-Barasoain, brought a San Pedro Calungsod statue to school, so that his whole class can pray to the new saint every day. At a very young age, he is following the footsteps of San Pedro, offering everything he does for God. He wants to be a priest in the future.

Grade 7 Field Trip: An Adventure outside AGS

It is the last year of our batch in the grade school, and a field trip is absolutely just what the doctor ordered. Making projects and listening to our teachers lectures were replaced by relaxation in air conditioned buses and a magical trip to a renowned amusement park we all know today, Enchanted Kingdom. First of all, we had to wake up very early in the morning. In my case, I had barely enough sleep at all. The insomnia was caused by my excitement over the day of fun that we can only have once a school year. Breakfast was the next essential objective then I sleeplessly traveled to the humble and quiet Ateneo de Manila Grade School during the time of about 5 o clock in the morning. The first image that went in my mind was the several gargantuan buses that lined in neat and uniform rows. It took a while to get our batch in the buses because our loading was a little bit delayed since we had to wait for the people who were late, and to my surprise there were quite a handful. It took us about two to three hours to finally get to the Coca-Cola Factory, but the other half of the batch went to the Magnolia Factory. After the tour, we quickly went to Enchanted Kingdom which was not that far from the Coca-Cola Factory. Our eyes opened at the site of the entrance especially those whove been to Enchanted Kingdom for their very first time like me. One thing was sure. All of us had a blast for the next four hours and that day was unforgettable that you want to do it every day! I just hope that this has bonded our batch together.

by J oaquin G abriel Fra nco|6-Luna The Ateneo Grade School community celebrated the Students-Teachers Day last February 10, a Friday. On this day, class officers and student volunteers get to be teachers of various subjects in different grade levels. I was assigned to teach Music in Grade 2. At first, I had hoped (I was going) to be assigned to teach Science or Math. However, I realized that Music was a nice subject to teach. I handled five classes that day with my friend and teaching partner, Nico. The children were all a bit noisy, but every time we wanted them to be quiet, we would offer them candy, and all of them would suddenly be quiet. We went through a few music drills with flashcards and a PowerPoint Presentation, and even our students had fun. At the end each class, we would throw candy in the air and the little kids would race each other for it. It was really fun and I hope that I can do this again next year.

Ateneo commemorates Christs Birth through Misa de Gallo By Kynan Taclobao

Misa de Gallo, more commonly known as Simbang Gabi, is one of the many Christmas traditions we Filipinos have. Misa de Gallo starts at the 16th of December and ends at the 24th, the eve before Christmas day. Most of the time, Misa de Gallo is held before dawn usually at around 3:00 a.m. Last year, however, Ateneo de Manila celebrated this traditional Filipino devotion in the evening, at exactly 8:00 p.m. in the Church of the Gesu. The Mass which we, the Eaglet members, were able to attend after the first day of our Press Time was the Mass for the second night. It was presided by Fr. Jose Quilongquilong S.J. and sponsored by TUGON, a social outreach organization in Ateneo college. According to Mylene Yawan, 25, Simbang Gabi shows your willingness to serve God.

BY RAFAEL DELA ROSA & Joachim Navarro From December 16 to 17 last year, members of The Eaglet, the school paper of Ateneo de Manila Grade School, participated in the Press Time, an extracurricular activity meant to both help the members of the Eaglet learn the basics of journalism and help the members of the Eaglet bond with each other. The event, which took place in the grounds of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School, started off with a session under one of their moderators, Mr. Jan Fredrick Cruz, on December 16. This session, which took place in Computer Lab B, helped the members of the Eaglet learn the basics of writing news and editorial articles. When evening came, the members of the Eaglet went to the Gesu to have the anticipated Simbang Gabi, where our Student Activities Coordinator, Mrs. Oni Gargaritano, accompanied us. After eating dinner nearby, the members of the Eaglet walked back to the classroom of 6-Del Pilar, the sleeping quarters of the students. They then had the Eaglet Night led by Ms. Ella Perez, where the Christmas Party and bonding with co-Eagleteers took place. It was also a night of revelations, as we learned the hidden talents of our colleagues. On the second day, the Eagleteers went to Computer Lab B for a second workshop session. Under their guest speaker, members of the Eaglet, this time around, learned more about writing opinion and review pieces. They were asked to do activities such as identifying the articles of well-known columnists and attempting to write a review or an opinion piece about a short film. They then ate breakfast from McDonalds. Afterwards, the members of the Eaglet got the chance to listen to a group of speakers from the Ateneo de Manila High School and Miriam High School. The speakers, all alumni of their grade schools publications, talked mainly about adapting to high school life and how it would be difficult, as well as how we can cope and change to address it. When we were done filling our tummies with some McDo and Shakeys food from our sponsor, we celebrated the Awarding Ceremonies. Awards were given to the Best Editor, Editor-in-Chief, Best Photographer, and the like.

Meet the Man Behind the Jesuit

It is never easy being the new guy. Many disadvantages come along with being one. There comes the challenge of insecurity. The unescapable doubt which not only the newbies, but all of us face at one point or another in our lives, when we are surrounded by strangers or people whom we crave acceptance from I can only imagine how this insecurity doubles for one who many people have high expectations from, yet is put in a new environment that he is not familiar with. He must have cringed in shyness, thus not being able to lay down his best cards on the table and not displaying the talents he does possess yet still refuses to release. You can judge if a man is a great person, or an ideal Atenean for that matter, if he reacts to this situation in a totally opposite manner. Only few are invincible to the temptation of being an aloof introvert, most especially if they are expected to deliver ten times more then what they can do. One though, who is the embodiment of a true Atenean and is vey much worthy of being compared to one of our many elite alumni, Jose Rizal, would be non other than Father Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ. Last December 7, I was able to receive the great, if not ultimate, honor of meeting our newest university president. I was dismissed at around 2:20 pm from class, but had to wait up to 4:30 p.m.to meet Father Jett. The event was called Meet the Jesuit, and I was at the basement of the MVP Center for Student Leadership at the college area of the Ateneo. Upon my arrival at the basement, I saw that it was very well prepared for the Meet the Jesuits affair. With a black sofa at the front. A huge, blue cartolina was placed behind it with the Ateneo seal placed right smack in the middle of it. There was also a projection screen at the right side of the venue, and a long table with cocktails and drinks to be given to the guests for free. I sat down beside my mom by the front row at the rightmost side of the place. When I was already settled down, I only had to wait a few minutes before it all started. The program began when the Ateneo Catechetical Instruction League or the ACIL sang a very seasonal and beautiful Christmas song as their opening number. When the song concluded, and when we sat down, I saw Father Jett, and Father Vic De Jesus, sitting down on the black couch. The emcees said they would interview Father Vic first. They asked him to tell us a short story about his life and his priesthood. Afterwards, the emcees asked Father Jett this time, who was the main focus of the event. We all know him as the perfectionist who was a smart student, a talented musician who can play countless instruments, an intelligent physicist, and the 30th president of our school. But just for a moment, forget about the millions of articles written about his perfection, set aside Father Jett the smart student, take away from your thoughts Father Jett the musician, or Father Jett the scientist; who do you see? I was shocked as well when he called himself maldito, or naughty in English. He wouldnt hear mass regularly when he was younger, which his father scolded him a lot for. But the biggest shocker for me was when he admitted that he had a girlfriend. I just didnt know how to react to that. It was only when his friend from ACIL forced him to hear mass that he actually did. I found another face of Father Jett that afternoon also Father Jett the prankster. He told us of a time when he was in ACIL in high school, and he was with his other ACIL members on their way to go caroling during sometime around Christmas. He was waiting with his other men ACIL members for the women of the group in the bus outside the Ateneo high school. He told the bus driver to hide the bus since the girls were taking a long time to get in their costumes. It took a very long time for them to find the bus. He also told us that when he was in his 4th year of high school, he was already starting to think about if whether he would go to into the priesthood or not. He went to Davao to think things out. He didnt know the dialect there, but he was able to adapt quickly and master the language and ways of the people of Davao. It was after that and a retreat he took that he decided to become a Jesuit. After Father Jetts speech, a group of four theologians who called themselves The Loyola Barbershop performed their own version of Jessie Js Pricetag. Questions then were asked of Father Vic and Jett, and it was so amazing to listen to their answers to the questions and their philosophies on life and how to live it. Both of them were truly geniuses in their own right. Of course, the personal questions were still not avoided, like when one guy asked Father Jett on what happened to his girlfriend. They still answered anyway. The emcees ended the night with thanking all who helped supervise the event. I approached Father Jett after and the moment he looked at me and smiled, I surprisingly didnt find myself star-struck. It was just because he seemed like he wasnt the man with the highest position in the largest and most prestigious university in the country. He looked so humble, despite his being such a talented person. When my mom spoke Bisaya to him, he spoke Bisaya back since they both came from the same province and told us that he knew one of my relatives. I found no pride in the way he spoke and he seemed like he put himself in the same level as me even if he was 100 ranks or more higher. I told him my name and we spoke for a while. I guess out of my amazement of how talented yet humble he was, I forgot to give him a few copies of the Eaglet magazine, which was actually my main reason for attending the event. I ran back from the parking lot to the basement and he was still there chatting with people and helping them out. He looked at me and said, Oh, Jolo! I couldnt believe he actually remembered my name. That proved he was really listening to our conversation and wasnt taking it for granted. I then handed him the magazines and had a picture taken with him. We said our goodbyes and that concluded one of the most memorable events of my life. After that night, I didnt only meet Father Jett the musician, the scientist, the priest, the inspirer, or the Jesuit, but the man behind him.

TAKBLUEHAN PARA SA KALUSUGAN AT KALIKASAN

Fun runs have been very helpful to schools, both as a way to promote physical fitness and an avenue to raise funds. That is why, the Ateneo Grade School Class Officers Movement under Mrs. Gargaritano, held one entitled TakBLUEhan para sa Kalusugan at Kalikasan last January 26, 2012 in the Ateneo Grade School campus, from 5:00 a.m. onwards. The fun run was organized to help raise awareness on the importance of well-being and to help raise funds for our countrys National Greening Program. Weeks before the run, everybody was informed and asked to participate in this fun activity. So many joined the run, from young to old, students to teachers, amateurs to experienced runners, and many more. The race consists of three categories: 1.5-km, 3-km, and 5-km. The event started with Fr. Bautista leading the opening ceremony, and Mr. Robles giving some remarks. Mr. Quodala, the race director, explained the guidelines afterwards, and led the warm-up exercises as well. Right after this was done, and all the runners assembled themselves by their category, they waited for the go-signal before sprinting ahead. First in line were the 5-K runners, who ran all the way from the AGS to the Loyola House of Studies to the Ateneo High School, and back. Next in line were the 3-K runners. Their track was simpler than the 5Ks from the AGS to the residence halls near the college covered courts to the college baseball field, and back. Last in the line were the 1-K runners. They went to baseball field and back to AGS. There were a lot of impressive runners, but what was really impressive was Mr. Nazario run in the 5-K. He was able to finish it in less than 30 minutes. When the runners got back, they are suppose to detach the tag with the barcode and give it to the race officials. When they are done with all that, they can line up to get some water or some Milo or get something to eat at the stalls near the chapel. There were different stalls you could buy from such as Champs, NYFD or you could just buy a snow cone. Each participant paid P-500 for the event. Proceeds will go to the National Greening Program a project that aims to plant 1.5 billion tree seedlings in 1.5 million hectares of government lands by the year 2016.

National Achievement Test 2011-2012: N.A.T. to be taken lightly

For many students, the Grade 6 experience has been a new adventure. For the current batch of Grade 6 students, they anticipate taking the National Achievement Test. According to the Department of Educations Memorandum No. 266, the NAT, as the test is popularly known, is a yearly test taken by students in the Grade 6 level to find out the academic status of the average Filipino student, and to determine the standing of a schools performance with respect to other schools. An interview last February 21 with Dr. Gina P. Serquina, the Assistant Headmaster for Middle School Affairs, sheds light to what the NAT really is. INTERVIEWER [I]: Good Afternoon, Maam! DR. SERQUINA [DS]: Good Afternoon to you too! I: Maam, what is the N.A.T basically? DS: It is the National Achievement Test for Grade 6, a nationwide test that would show how much of the standards of DepEd are shown in the specific school if they are performing well to DepEd and the [academic] status of the school. I: Like the Practice IPSLE we had already taken, is the N.A.T going to be graded? DS: No, for there is no effect on the students normal grades unlike the IPSLE which is considered a quiz. I: Is the reviewer that was given to us similar to the actual test? DS: It is supposed to be similar to it, but the content is different from the actual test itself. I: This question is frequently asked by various students Is the actual test going to be difficult? DS: We chose only relevant questions within your realm but we did not make the test, so we dont know what to expect as well also. It does contain stock and content knowledge. I: What do you want us Grade 6 students to learn from this once-in-a-lifetime experience? DS: It is more of the experience to always be prepared for out of school exams. It is one way of test taking experience to help you students to be smart and resilient in certain situations like when you are applying for a job at a company so, yes, more of the experience. I: Thank you, Dr. Serquia, for setting aside some time for the further knowledge for us Grade 6 students about the N.A.T! DS: Youre welcome. For us Middle School students, the Class Night is a time of unity, where all of us, (Yes, even those who have little petty cat fights with each other) disregard all our differences and act as one. May it be in the games or dances, this day will always be marked in our minds and hearts. But, whats really the reason behind everything Im saying? Im going to tell you a short run-through of our Class Night , and all I hope is that every word I type will be enough to be able to satisfy all the events that happened on that day. ( Believe me, an article is not enough. You should rummage through every source you could find. )After the classes were officially dismissed, nearly all of the batch blared and shrieked out an assortment of chants and cheers. Like savage beasts who were just liberated from enslavement, we shouted to the top of our lungs to show our euphoria and exhilaration for this long-awaited day. When all the clamor was finished, we all trepidly prepared our stuff for the night, making sure we didnt neglect anything, even the most insignificant of materials like flashlights and board games. By the time all of this were done, we were given the option to do anything adolescent brains could lead us to. Playing basketball until our bodies are drenched with sweat, running all around the campus like a complete dimwit, gorging and stuffing ourselves with the food that can be bought from the stalls or even just playing endless rounds of Uno or Monopoly Deal without budging or moving. Yes, these are kind of things we would normally do as a Grade 7 student on a rare event like the ht from Class Night. At about 7:00, all of us hastily ran back to our respective class rooms and dressed up for our group dance in the main program. After this, my teacher, Mr. Boquiron, told us hell meet us there at the Covered Courts, and that we should all make sure none of us forgot anything which can potentially ruin our presentation. We all practiced our dance one more time, and as sweet it may seem, gave each other a handful of We can do it-s and Teamwork will make everything successful-s. On the way there, an eerie silence and complete darkness surrounded us, and I just thought about our dance, whether or not it will be a monumental failure, to prevent fear from overwhelming me. When we reached the destination, my group, which was from Pignatelli to Xavier, eagerly exhibited our amateur dance skills, and before I knew it, our presentation was finished. Next up was a game wherein we had to dribble 2 balls not of the same size, and I am telling you, it wasnt as easy as most of you would think. It required you to shift and control the power from each of your hand, depending on which ball. Well, after this, it was the turn for the rest of the other sections to perform. Their dances were fantastic, and frankly, I thought theirs were quite greater than ours. By this time, we were already so ecstatic and elated, just like a child in a deluge of gifts, and it couldnt get any better. But, our degree of joy was put up a few levels higher when our teachers gave us a surprise performance. It was a smashing hit, and Im sure everyone admired our teachers much more since it took more than guts to do something like that. When the program officially ended, the rest of the time was used up for playing Pusoy Dos and other board games, ghost hunting and watching a plethora of movies. This Class Night did not only tighten the bond that holds every class, but it also gave us the opportunity to get to understand our distinctions and get to know each other deeper.

Darryl Villa Abrille, 7 KOSTKA Whenever I hear the words class night, the first thing that pops into my head are, bonding, ghost hunting, and a sleepover in school. As the day of July. 20, 2012 began, the class night was already in my head. As I arrived school, all I would see were some sleeping bags, pillows and even a flash light. Everyone was excited for the class night, but we first had to past the day, before it could start. Right after the flag ceremony, we had our liturgical singing practice for the upcoming mass for the feast of St. Ignatius. It was led by Ms. Matias the head of music. We practiced some new changes in some songs precisely in Lamb of God and Day by Day. Later on, we had two subjects, followed by recess. Right after our thirty minute break, we were asked to go straight to the Singson Hall once again, for our close encounter with Jesuits. We listened to some Jesuits, as they told us their experience of being a soldier of God. A few more hours and the most awaited night, will finally start. After the close encounter, we took our lunch and then had our last subject. As the last bell rung, everyone started shouting, the class night officially begun. For three hours, students were allowed to swim, fix there sleeping bags, eat dinner, or even take a nap. At around 4:00pm each group of sections or team was given a chance to practice for their class night dance at the covered courts. At 7:00 pm the program started. Everyone were surprised, to see that the class advisers and subject teachers, had a special dance number. Afterwards, we played a game, in where one had to dribble two balls which were not of the same size. Even though it was difficult, each player was still able to pull it through. It was followed by a dance number of team D, who danced to the tune of Turn up the Music by Chris Brown and team C who danced to the tune of Starships by Nicki Minaj. After that pleasant dance, we played a game once again, where we needed to dribble a small ball using a larger ball. Next, we watched a dance number once again by team B and A, who danced to the tune of Stronger. Before ending the program, we had a prayer session, which was led by Ms. Rivera. Unfortunately, we were not able to go ghost hunting, due to the weather. Instead we just watched some movies, played board games and shared ghost stories until morning. As the sun shone, the next day, we packed our things and tidied the classroom, then went home. The unforgettable remembrance of the class night will always be treasured, by each and every one of us.

Aptly titled Drive for Five: G5NGNAM STYLE (Grade 5 Night, Great momeNts with the teAchers and classMates, the event proved to be an epic blast for the gang ng 5 of teachers and students. It was enthusiastically well attended and supported by parents and other family members. Read on to find out what students of 5-Barasoain and Biak-na-Bato boys have to say about their first class night in the Atenedo middle school. DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE OF YOUR FIRST CLASS NIGHT - It was the first time I was away from my parents. It was also the first time I had the longest bonding with my classmates, teachers. (Justin Valenzuela) - In my very first class night, we had tons of fun! (Travis Cruel) - Through the class night, I got to know my best friends better. (Thristan Ison) - My favourite part was the program, where all 13 sections of grade 5 had a chance to play, compete against each other and dance their group dances and the Gangnam style. I will never forget this class night. (Luigi Soliven) - The class night was exciting and fun. For the first time in my life in the middle school, we slept together as a class without our fathers. Although I kept waking up every two hours during the night (thanks to Mr. ws ghost stories), I managed to urge my body to sleep by imagining my classmates talking out loud. (Enzo Abesamis) - At first I was embarrassed to dance because my parents were there and a lot of people were watching us but after our dance number, my parents were happy and I wasnt embarrassed anymore. (Jaziel Galicia) - It was very fun. I felt like an endless battery for being wide awake until 2am. (Kiko Tallada) - Even after lights out, I couldnt sleep because of how much fun the class night was. (Aloi Tuprio) - I woke up at 2:30 am because one of the sections was noisy and one of my classmates was taking up space. (Benedict Guevara) - My first class night was very fun and at the same time very tiring of all the fun I had. It was more than what I expected because everyone was happy we had pillow fights and lots of board games. It was very stress free because I almost forgot every problem in my whole life. (Joshua Dy) - Spending your night with your teachers and classmates could be really exciting. (Isaiah Masongsong) - Make the most of a once in a lifetime opportunity. The story telling was fun and at the same time, a bit scary. The fun part is that some stories are made up. The scary part was some were real. Big Blue Run 6 by Simon Lorenz C. Coloma

In the history of the Ateneo de Manila University, there have been 6 Big Blue Runs where a lot of Ateneans and other people join. They participate in these runs for fun. Big Blue Run is the biggest fun run community in the Ateneo de Manila University. The recent BBR6 was also partnership with QCTAA or the Quezon City. The class of 5-Barasoain won as the class with the most number of participants and enjoyed P5000 worth of gift certificates from Burger King. Coach Mick Perez and our very own Mr. Igor Quodala, organized this successful fun run.

Grade 4 Students Participate in Their First Recollection

by: Juan Rafael I. Silva Even though it was early Saturday morning, students were excited for what lay ahead: their very first recollection. The day began with a mass. After, each class went to their own room. The recollection master, a priest, introduced himself and said he had prepared some activities for the students. The first activity was quite fun. Students were made to go around the classroom with a piece of paper on their backs and were instructed to write thank you messages on their classmates backs. The priest explained that we should all be thankful for the blessings God has given us, including our friends. During the break, students tried to reflect on and take in everything the priest had said. Afterwards, the second activity began. Students wrote down a major life experience for each year since they were born. Some students shared what they wrote and the priest explained that Jesus is with us in all the days of our lives. After listening and singing along to a song, students said a prayer asking God to be with them always. Finally, the priest bid goodbye to the students. Although the recollection took only four hours, students learned so much from their first recollection.

HANGING HABAGAT STRIKES THE PHILIPPINES

Rivera of 7-Kostka According to the statement promulgated by the government, because of this destructive monsoon, the economy became unstable due to all of the money to be used in different projects like relief operations and to restore structures destroyed throughout the monsoon. Also, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO) faster price adjustments were observed on food items such as fish, vegetables and fruit Based on that statement, it is safe to say that economy, even in its most simple form, is more precarious than ever. The Habagat killed a total of more than 83 people throughout its destructive episode. Although not as much as Ondoys, it still is a humongous number compared to other instances. In this onslaught, thousands of families were left homeless because of the monsoons force and strength. The roads were also engulfed in flood water mainly the roads in Manila, Caloocan. Quezon City, and even the widely used NLEX. The Habagat also left the Marikina River to overflow causing floods in the Marikina Vicinity. It also left the La Mesa and Angat Da, to inundate the area surrounding it causing hip-high floods and its release of water to stop it from overflowing. Landslides were inevitable in that time especially in the areas of Quezon City and the nearby provinces. Even after months of recovery, the Philippines still look back the on the untoward incidents of the Hanging Habagat last August 1-8, 2012. Over the 8-day period of destruction, over 85 people died causing an uproar regarding our environmental conscience. Although never considered a storm, the Habagat wind still met the Filipino in its full force with wind strength of 14.48 km/hr. The Habagat mainly hit the Northern parts of Luzon namely the provinces in Region 3, Region 4A (CALABARZON) and the cities of the National Capitol Region (NCR). Because of this sudden surge, the Philippines became unprepared and unaware of the upcoming heavy rainfall, albeit Filipinos improvised amidst the unanticipated deluge. For example, they transformed public buildings and offices into makeshift evacuation centers for the affected. Also, some even used their mattresses to substitute rescue boats. Amidst all the destruction, those charitable enough joined relief operations when the monsoon calmed down a bit. Even in social media, a lot of people from the Philippines and in other countries had shown their support to those affected. The Ateneo also had their share of almsgiving by encouraging the community to donate to the ones affected by the Habagat. In retrospect, no one else can be blamed for such a cataclysmic episode except for us. It seems like an unending paradigm, but we all know its true. To cause such destruction is a crime upheld, but a crime we all must suffer. But its never too late to change the course of things.

During October 25,2012 the whole Ateneo de Manila Grade School celebrated UN day.We celebrated it in the covered courts. First,we watched a UN day video.Then,we had the living rosary.After praying we went back to our classrooms and had a regular school day.Our class teacher (Mrs.Santico) chose the best costumes.The best costumes were the costumes of Daniel Engo,Kyle Dee, and Matt Rotea.My other classmates costumes were nice too but, they were not the best.I ask some of them questions about their costumes and they had lots to say about them.UN day in Ateneo is always fun. Just in case you do not know, UN day is about peace.Now, Ban ki Moon is the Secretary General of the United Nations.

10 Things I Know Now that I am a Middle School Student
by the Grades 4 & 5 Eagleteers under the supervision of Ms. De Castro and Ms. Torres

Mrs. Pinky AquinoAbellada shared to the Grade 5 students of Ateneo her personal experiences during Martial Law, the heroism of the Filipino people especially her father, Ninoy Aquino, and the lessons we can learn from that period in our history.

1. There are more rules in the Middle School so we need to be more disciplined to avoid sanctions such as suspension, benching, jug, and etc. Students have prefecting schedules for recess and lunch. 2. We now have different subjects. AP and Filipino are now taught separately. Reading and Language were merged into English in MS and we dont have Penmanship classes anymore. We now also have Computer Ed. and SIPAG. 3. Teachers are stricter in MS and we now have our own class officers who give us merits and demerits instead of bars and stars. 4. There are different teachers per subject and we call them Maam or Sir instead of teacher. 5. In PS, teachers call us boys. Now they call us gentlemen. 6. We are now the older brothers or kuyas of the PS. 7. We now have our own lockers inside our classroom. 8. After the Crossing Over ceremony, we now have to tuck in our polo shirts every day. 9. There are more choices in COCA like swimming, fencing, Eaglet, Ventures, Bughaw, Hobby Craft, and Japanese among others. We now have INTRAMS every Friday instead of Sports Fest every quarter. 10. We learned the Middle School Thrust which reminds us to be true Ateneans by being faithful to God, serving our country, taking care of the environment, and loving others as we love ourselves.

When asked of what traits make a good leader, the one of brains or brawns should come into the picture. Most of the time, the loud voice and the firm stature take away the crowd, and it is the reserved, silent one with true potential and skill that is overlooked. A good leader is not just one; a good leader is both. As someone had shown me during the AGSCOM Miting de Avance, when he walked up the stage with such humility, yet spoke the words of a man with so much knowledge. He taught us about TraPos, (Traditional Polititians) those who are, in his own words, magaling sa salita, ngunit mahina sa gawa. It was crystal clear to me that he did not belong to that group. This man was no iceberg, showing only a part of himself. He was sincere, and truthful. This man was a true leader. Amidst the everyday, busy goings-on in the Ateneo, this one man, the anchor of the Grade School, is on top of everything, keeping it together. One afternoon, I was able to better see why Father Kit was appointed as the main man of the AGS. Being a leader can be one of the most tiring jobs. But Father showed me, if you love being a man-for-others, it could be the most fulfilling one. 1) What do you like doing best as Headmaster? I like meeting up with people, and planning strategies on how to develop the whole school like implementing programs for the benefit of the entire community. I really enjoy that portion of my job. I also find community projects fun. 2) How do you feel on the usage of social-networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter of the students and teachers of the AGS? Well, for adults, and I assume they are responsible enough, social networking can be an advantage. It speeds up communication, and people can connect with one another easily. But then again its just a tool that should be used for an objective that should be good. And, any tool can be abused. For example, you can misquote someone, then theres cyber bullying. It can be addictive also, and serves as a distraction for students. And, if one is truly addicted to it, it is hard to delineate the virtual world from the real one. That is the worst thing that could happen. I wouldnt recommend it to minors, especially Primary School boys. They should be reading books. That is what Ive been telling people, especially the students here. You need to identify what youre good at and read a lot about it, so that you may become a better person someday. Be it in the field of law, or medicine, if you read a lot about what you think will be your vocation, then you will excel. So social networking has its advantages. But, we must be mindful that it can be abused. 3) What is the easiest task of being the headmaster? Everything becomes easy for me, because I love what I do. Even if it is objectively hard, I enjoy it because I like my work. This is where my fulfillment lies, and that is why I am happy here. 4) In your own words, what makes the ideal image of an Atenean? One is a true Atenean if he has imbibed the Ignatian values. If he has a heart to serve and even sacrifices himself for his country, especially. He must have compassion for the poor. He also needs to be humble and admits his mistakes and learns from them. Here in the grade school, we try to educate people holistically to not only train the mind, but train the heart, as well. The two must work hand-in-hand. One cannot serve competently if he only has one developed aspect of himself. 5) What is your view of other schools using Tablets instead of books? Do you find this helpful or unhelpful? I dont know the details of other schools that are using tablets now, but from what I hear, they are just trying to solve the problem that comes with having to carry heavy bags. In fact, I am meeting with an e-tablet committee. Tablets are very handy; all your books are already there. When I visited Singapore last summer, the teachers were sending homework to their students through the internet. It is very practical. We are now trying to look at the possibilities of doing the same here in the AGS. It is a work-in-progress. I, together with the administrators, am open to it. We havent consulted the entire community yet, though. That is part of the job of the e-tablet committee, to conduct surveys and all that. 6) In your 5 years of being the Headmaster, what is the most memorable experience youve ever had? Ive had a lot of memorable experiences. One would be the incident that claimed the life of one of our students, Amiel Alcantara. That happened in my first year as Headmaster. Another one would be my training in Singapore. I get to meet all sorts of people whenever I go there. I go every summer with the teachers to learn about what the Singapore educators do. I also enjoy the Workshop for Ignatian Spirituality for Parents, or the WISP. I get to know more about the lives of parents, and I get to interact with them on a more personal level. So, thats a learning experience for me. 7) If you were a teacher, what grade level and subject would you like to teach and

why? M a y b e Id like to teach older people. If in the grade school, Id probably choose to teach the M i d d l e S c h o o l students because theyre more mature. I like to engage our boys like when students ask intelligent questions and think analytically. I like those types of discussions. Id like to teach Christian Life Education and Ignatian spirituality. 8) What is your greatest contribution to the AGS? Connecting with the parents, thats one. Another one would be aligning systems and structures, and assigning the right people to the right jobs. For example, before I came in, there was no Coordinator for traffic, safety and security concerns. That is the position that Ms. Beth Bermio holds now. Also, although there was an office that took care of both Campus Ministry and Social Involvement, but only one person, Ms. Remy Rivera, was heading it. I saw that it was a problem so I divided the office into two. I also appointed Mrs. Oni Gargaritano to help the COCAs move better. We now have ISEWs or the Ignatian Spirituality for Education Workshop. We offer it annually to our new teachers, but now weve expanded it to include athletic coaches. Even our security guards undergo formation programs. Id like to continue next year the formation programs Ive started during my administration. I have to say though, that I dont do this alone. I do it collaboratively, with people, and we do it as a team. 9) What are your plans after your term as AGS headmaster is ended? As a Jesuit, I defer to my Provincial Superior, because we need to balance the needs of the Province with the abilities, interests and competence of the Jesuits. I personally like being a leader. I like moving things, implementing programs and contributing to the community and to the school. I could also give retreats, and do counseling for people. I could also go back to mission work. It depends, really. The Provincial Superior discerns with me and his consultors, and ultimately decides. We all have a vow of obedience, and we follow the decision of the Provincial. 10) What qualifications do you think you have, which led the Society of Jesus to choose you to become the head of the AGS? Before coming here, I spent four years in the Ateneo High School as an administrator. I held the office of the Associate Principal for Formation. Maybe they trusted me enough to run a big school. I am also a product of this Grade School. All of my brothers are too. I know the history of this institution, being an Atenean, from being a student, then a Jesuit scholastic, and then later on a priest. 11) Were you interested in any sports growing up? I earned a black belt in Karate way back when I was in high school. I used to also play basketball and lifted weights. Now, I watch the UAAP basketball games live, especially the championship games. 12) What areas do you think need further improvement in the AGS? What are your plans for the AGS and its community? We follow the priorities of Father Jett Villarin SJ, our University President. Our three priorities, basically, are Mission and Identity, Love and Service for our Nation, and Environment and Development. But for him, the most important one among the three would be Mission and Identity, which is all about sharing the Ignatian heritage and spirituality with the members of the Ateneo community. And I agree with him. That is why, even years back, I focused on Mission and Identity, even involving the parents in the Bigay Puso programs and all that. I think our strength is in our spiritual programs, our Catholic rituals and our sacraments, our community prayers together, Bigay Puso, GK and the like. I think were doing great in these areas. Also, of course, our strength is our hard effort to pursue academic excellence especially in Math, Science and English. Although our scores in the iPSLE were better than the first time we took it, were still far from Singapore standards. We will achieve our dreams if we consistently work hard. As you know were already into Singapore Science and Math curriculum. We need to also develop the ecological garden in the David Hall. My idea is that it becomes a natural laboratory for students, and a model on how we nurture our natural environment. 13) What else do you think we need to do in order to become ideal Ateneans?

The ideal Atenean needs to be grounded. He needs to expose himself to the reality of poverty and suffering around him. I think, in general, for many Ateneans, life is too convenient. It could be due to the temptations of consumerism, materialism and all that. I dont blame them because for many of them, that is their world. The ideal Atenean also needs to be willing to sacrifice for the nation. He needs to feel the pain of the suffering people. Life isnt all about getting rich and getting famous. The Ateneo way is about cultivating a heart of service and love, and training the mind. Both must complement each other. That is the ideal Atenean for me. 14) What do you think of the K-12? Ideally it should be good, because as you know, we are one of the very few countries in the world that havent adopted the K-12. So we want to somehow be at par internationally. But we cannot simply move into this overnight. Its a process. At this point, for the Basic Education units of the Ateneo, I want to be on the conservative side. I dont want to move too fast without studying the possible effects of the transitions. K-12 is basically just adding more years to Philippine basic education. But here at the Ateneo, we have had 12 years ever since -- eight years for Prep to Grade 7, then four years in the high school. The wisdom of the K-12 for us to challenge ourselves to set higher academic standards like teaching some freshman college courses in the high school and some high school courses in the grade school. Curriculum enhancement is vital taking in consideration the capacity of the students to learn. 15) How much importance do you give to co-curricular activities? Those are very important. Thats why its called co-curricular activity, not extra. In CoCAs, people are supposed to discover their talents and potentials, and actualize them. Theyre supposed to enhance their social skills or their E.Q. by knowing how to work in teams. Theyre also supposed to be leaders in their own chosen fields. More and more, I think people need to realize that to be successful, we need each others help. No man is an island. Its all about networking, generating ideas, and learning from other people. Sports are also very important, especially with children and boys who have a lot of energy. One needs to also be physically fit. Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body), as they say. 16) What do you think of the tuition fee hikes? Tuition fee hikes are reasonable and theyre regulated. This year we have a 5% increase. Compared to the other schools for boys like LaSalle Greenhills, Xavier School, and the Paref Schools, our rates are competitive. Every year, we spend a portion of the budget to give aid to financially disadvantaged students. We have a good system of support for disadvantaged families. 17) How do you maintain the good teachers here in the AGS? We reward them. We have annual awards. Benefits are very good. We also train them well, and send them abroad. We want to make them feel that they are an important part of the Ateneo family, and that they are partners-inmission of the Ateneo. You see, this is one best feature of The Ateneo Way; we are a family, a community, not simply an institution. We are sensitive to peoples needs. We are there to support them in whatever way we can. I believe that we are a community who cares for each other. We try to go out of our way to care for people and build relationships. Thats very important, especially in a school setting.

Kits desire to Love God and Serve God takes on a renewed meaning today as he professes his Final Vowsthis journey that traces its beginnings in childhood; Loving and serving God as a catechist to communities in Bulacan & San Mateo, genuinely searching for lifes richer meaning and finding it in service. Guided and directed by a kind and nurturing Jesuit, Fr. Raul Bonoan SJ, who was also the ACIL moderator, and perhaps seeing how life as a Jesuit through the path of vocation of his brother Fr. Mon Bautista. He entered the Society of Jesus as a novice in May 1983 and was ordained priest in April 1995. His first assignment -- being the parish priest in one of the Jesuit missions in Bukidnon -- St. Therese Parish, Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon. Amidst much material poverty of the Sentro and the neighboring communities yet plenty in terms of the native Lumads sincerity, love and loyalty, the grace of finding God in the mission, and loving and serving God through His people, grew ever more fervently. He lived among the people of Miarayon for 4 years and in that time, he lived as one with them, among them, guiding them towards knowing what was important to them, and finding ways to help them achieve their dreams for their community. Thereby bringing them to an awareness of their being gifted as a people and leading them to believe in Gods abiding presence, generosity and kindness. For a young priest assigned in the difficult mission of Miarayon, loving and serving God was a daily commitment which was most laborious but which was also filled with great reward and fulfillment. In 2000, Fr.Kit was assigned as part of the formation team at Center for Ignatian Spirituality (CIS), Center for Family Ministry (CEFAM), and Vice Superior for Juniors and Philosophers. His new mission was to guide and shepherd people back into themselves through retreats and recollections and other spiritual formation activities so that they may live out lifes greater purpose of love and service to others. Fr. Kit went on Tertianship in Boston, Massachusets in 2003. And upon his return after almost a year, was assigned at the Ateneo de Manila High School as Assistant Principal for Formation. This new assignment called for him to continue being a guide to people in their journey of faith, only this time, it was a mission to love and serve God through the youth. In 2008, Fr.Kit was assigned to be the Headmaster of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School. This time, the mission is to shepherd a community of about 4100 students and about 200 adult formators including the parents of the young Ateneans, and leading them all towards finding God in their daily lives, in school, in their homes, in their communities, and to make it their own mission to love and serve God in everything. And so his journey as a Jesuit priest continues. His desire to love and serve God through the people and communities he finds himself being a part of burns ever more strongly. He embarked on a mission to love and serve God in everything. And by Gods grace and love, his mission continues.

Okay. First of all, who the heck is Jeremy Lin? Jeremy Lin is a Taiwanese-Chinese basketball player of the NBA team New York Knicks. He studied in Harvard University with a course in Economics. He graduated in 2010 with honors (!), and was also a varsity star in Harvard. He went undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft. But seeing his talent, he was signed by the Golden Sate Warriors. But in order to save money, they had to waive his contract. He ended up in the Knicks where he got to play. Then all of us sudden, he scored at least 20 points and had at least seven assists in the last seven games he played. Thus, Linsanity was born.

But Jeremy Lin is more than just one of the most popular basketball players in the world. Inside, I see a humble down to earth man who is a devout Christian, an eloquent person, and a moms boy. Jeremys story is also one that inspires me. A basketball player from a school not known for its athletics is buried at the end of the bench. Instead of quitting, he tries to work his way into the roster. Finally given the chance to play, he excels and succeeds. But early on, people had doubts whether his streak would last. Many said he wouldnt get past Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers. But he proved all doubters wrong. Not only did he excel, he scored 38 points, dished out eight assists and grabbed two rebounds. In his post game interview, the ever humble Lin said My stats dont matter. As long as the team won, Im satisfied Now, the Knicks are in the running for the playoffs. Jeremy Lin has led them to where they are right now. Best adjective to describe this: The ride has been LINsane, but its still LINspirational.

Apple has made a lot of interesting products which really changed our lives today. They have encouraged the use of touch screens and trackpads. They have also pushed portability to the next level. A clear example of this is their new product, the Macbook Air. The Macbook Air basically spells two words, SAVING SPACE. This laptop is so thin that it can fit through a 0.2 cm space! The components have been made especially small to be able to occupy as little space as possible. This gives enough space for the battery making it last for 5-7 hours. It may be small in size, yet it promises enormous capabilities. It has a lot of memory for all the applications you want to download. Like all the other Macbooks, it also has a trackpad with various shortcuts making each experience with this computer more memorable. This Macbook may look very good, however, it also has a few disadvantages. It has only a random access memory of two to four gigabytes unlike the Macbook Pro that has four to eight gigabytes. Even if it has almost the same outlets as the Macbook Pro, it doesnt have a CD outlet. However, other from these things, it is still an exceptional computer.

AHHHHHHHHHHH! A MONSTER! is what I thought when she was chasing me all over the house. Shes gonna cast a magical spell on me. I must escape! is what I believe when she forces me to sleep. POISON IN THE FOOD! The only explanation why it tastes so icky is why I never ate vegetables. Such childish and foolish thought right? But to be honest, my growth and relatively wide knowledge has made me grown (grown to be bad actually). I started hating her when I got more independent. I started avoiding her, disrespecting her, at times, maybe even hurting her without me knowing about it.But what can I do, she is my controller. Everyday, every step I make is monitored by BIG BROTHER. I cant get out of anything. But as I think that the road to infinite independence i s just there, no, I dont think, I know that it is there. I just cant walk the walk of independence. Travel the path of infinite freedom. Escape the wrath of the evil witch. But then some powerful, unstoppable force pulls me back. This force that pulls me is all that stops me from accomplishing my goal of escaping. And when I look back, I hear the wails of sadness and grief. I struggle and struggle as I try to find the weakness of this monster, but, NO! My heart says accept it as a friend, while my body forces me to RUN! RUN! RUN! Ive always had two choices: Freedom or Custody. And honestly, Ive frequently listened to my body, but I always know the result. Complete and utter failure. But then I chose to listen to my heart for once. I decide, why not right? As if listening to my body would free me from BIG BROTHER. I have gained new knowledge since that day. The knowledge to show me that BIG BROTHER is really, just my mom. The unrelenting darkness has changed in to a soothing and irresistible light. So as I think about it, I realize how wrong I have been. Maybe mom is a controller, maybe even a monster, but she will always be a peaceful tormentor. Everyday, I continue to think Why? But then my heart immediately shows me that she doesnt last here forever. NO matter what I think, my heart shows me her. I see her cheering me on when life pushes me down. She becomes a monster to force me to do better. She always sees to it that she will take care of me. But when my heart shows me grown up, I see her on her bed waiting for her time, and me somewhere unimportant missing it. I saw that I was going to miss that one last time to say I LOVE YOU once more and miss the time to see her smile one last time. All this flashes in my mind thanks to my heart. So as I see her sleeping, tired from her daily work, I never stop remembering that she may be a controller, but she is always my mom. I live and pray everyday for her to never leave me, but I cant change anything, for I am just a little boy, always wanting and waiting to be controlled. I love my mom; I never want her to leave me. So as I sit down and type this poem (more of a letter actually), I see her in every word I type. I will never forget the memories we had in my thirteen years of being controlled. Happy Valentines Day! NO matter what I say or the many tears we shed because of each other, please remember that I will always love you.

Healthiness is such an indefinable quality that varies from person to person. What is considered healthy by one person may not be for another. Thats why when people see the word healthy, they get ticked off. They have an automatic reaction of Im gonna buy this. Now, I understand that health may not be a top priority for us kids, but think about your parents and other adult loved ones. Theyre struggling to keep healthy, because they cant go outside and play basketball or something any time of the day. Those loved ones might be victims of marketing. After reading this point (which was so big I had to divide it into two sub-categories), you might be able to stop your parents from wasting their money on some bogus health product. Im sure all of us today are constantly being wooed by the latest in video games and gadgets. Now, theres nothing wrong with that, but what if we buy stuff that isnt really worth our money? You may ask, how could I do something as stupid as that? The answer is one word: marketing. What is marketing? Marketing is a strategy used by companies to make products more interesting to the buyers, thus increasing the sales. It is used by almost every company out there. If a company has good marketing, they can make a totally bogus product seem like a breakthrough for mankind. A lot of marketing is subtle, like the words, pictures, and colors a company uses; which makes it hard to see through. This article will discuss the common marketing techniques used out there, as well as how to see through them to avoid getting scammed. 1) EMPHASIS The most classic technique used in marketing is emphasizing the good qualities of the product and glossing over the bad qualities. One way companies emphasize the good qualities of a product is making the text stating the good qualities bigger and the text stating the bad qualities smaller. Companies also spend more time discussing the positive than the negative. In visual advertisements, the text that states the bad qualities is usually finer. In audible advertisements, the bad qualities are usually broadcasted softer or faster so you dont pay much attention to it.

A. FOOD Most adults, especially the ones of this generation, are struggling now more than ever to keep healthy. Why? Because companies are coming up with more ways to make a product taste better using cheap ingredients. These ingredients include sugar, oils, fat, and salt. Of course, they dont tell you that its in the stuff you buy. How do you avoid being scammed? Look at the nutrition facts. Like the credibility technique, being scammed by healthy food can be avoided by doing research. A lot of word tweaking comes into play when advertising healthy food. This Years Leaders
Jose Gabriel S. Castillo, 6-Del Pilar This years nomination for class officers was quite a success. There were lots of people who were nominated and who wanted to run, but in the end, our leaders were chosen. Last June 18-26, the yearly tradition of electing our very own class officers. First, the teachers put up some application forms for people who would like to run for office. Next, them, together with the students nominated their classmates whether or not they wanted to run or not. Then, the teachers checked the application forms of the students to see if they are able to pass all the requirements. After that, the people who wanted to run set up posters made from recycled materials to save money and time. Later, they gave their respective speeches to urge their fellow classmates to vote for them. Over the next few days, they campaigned some more with some getting success, while others, not so much. Then the day of elections arrived and we put our votes in a little box. The counting party then carefully counted and tallied each vote. In the end, we had our class officers and got ready to campaign for AGSCOM if they wanted to be part of it. I would like to give a round of applause to all people who won. I also hope that next year, we will have leaders that are just as good as the ones today. And as Morgan Freeman would say, I do know there are a lot of people who seem to be in my corner, and thats, of course, wonderful. Im really more interested in the nomination than in the award, because I think the nomination just puts you within a group of outstanding actors.

WHY THEY by Jolo Crisol THE EAGLE CHOSE
We were never really good under pressure. My dream of having a San Beda, or La Salle-like team never really came true. I wanted a team that thrives under stress, and uses it as something to fuel them. I wanted a team that when down by 30 in the fourth quarter, can climb back up, and beat the other team by just as much. A team that, from start to finish, no less than devours its opponent, and sends them home with tears rolling down their faces. I wanted a team that had heart. Was that so much to ask? Lately, Ive been finding myself sitting down on my seat, late in the game, finding Ateneo in a state of disarray. With Greg Slaughter back to his ol sleepy self, not showing a tinge of aggressiveness, with Norman Black left scratching his head, with everyone on the team without hustle, nor heart, I wanted to just give up. I would much prefer a team like Enrico Villanueva, and La Tenorios back in 02. They never won as much, they werent as good, but they had so much heart. Back in the day, if you so much as pushed an Atenean player, youd find yourself on the floor after being hit in the throat by another Atenean. You could never feel safe, even if you were up by 20 against us. Because you knew Ateneo would come back, with fire in their eyes, hungry as carnivorous beasts, for the win. You went home satisfied, even if you lost, because you knew the boys did their best. Gone are those days. Gone are the days when youd feel the ground rumble, and your heart pounding when the Ateneans emerge from the dugout. Gone are the days when youd look up at the scoreboard and see we beat N.U. by 30. I miss them. What makes me so frustrated is that we have so much potential. We have a hotshot recruit from our very own high school in Kiefer Ravena. We have a sevenfoot center in Greg Slaughter. We have a reigning finals MVP in Nico Salva. We have the world at our fingertips. I may come off as selfish when I complain. I mean, were still number 1 on the standings. But its different when youre a die-hard; its different if youre me. Nowadays, by how many points do we beat UST? Heck, they even beat us! UP for that matter, can harass us, and even came close to beating us the last time. With our lineup, we should be able to clobber all the teams by fifty points. Literally. Such are my frustrations with the team. You can only imagine how my anxieties grew when MVP announced his withdrawal of his support for Ateneo. The moment I heard that, I had doubts about the championship this year. I knew a long time ago that we dont have a chance next year, but I still had hope for this one. Suddenly, Atenean threads in fora were no longer filled with posts, and such. The world seemed shocked, and so was I. Knowing Ateneo, theyll come out depressed, and see that theres no use of chasing the crown anymore, I thought. Goodbye 5 peat. So I waited, for about two weeks for the first final four game, hoping that it wont affect them. How lucky are we that it was LaSalle who stole the fourth slot? So I suited up, wearing my lucky game shirt, hoping that some of its luck would rub

off on the team. I rode my car to the game, thinking about the chances of the championship run stopping here. I was left wondering too though, if the same crowd would come to support the team again. Surprisingly, a line of blue was bursting outside of the arena, waiting to be let in. Having only Upper B seats, I had to suffer the mile-long line, and wait. Amidst my depression of having to suffer the pain in my legs, was a tinge of happiness, and a glimmer of hope. That other Ateneans, despite the setbacks still came to support the blue and white, and the players would bring home the win. I went inside of the arena after a while, receiving more intensity from the crowd than I wanted. For almost an hour, the two sides were exchanging cheers, as the usual banter floated about the big dome. Gradually, the arena was being stuffed with green, and blue. Then, it was game time. Every foul ball, every made shot, every stolen ball, the Ateneans cheered louder than usual, as the deafening noises stung my ears. This is what I wanted from the crowd. This is the intensity I ever so coveted from us. The players were no different. For the very first time, I saw them playing like they actually wanted to win. Still, I found us down by 11 by the start of the fourth. It was a mix of my disappointment and my now already hoarse voice that pushed me to sit down, and begin experiencing my usual late-game melancholy. How could they let this slip? We were so close! Why did they lose heart gain? I made a glance to my side, to see if my dad was doing the same. But he wasnt. He was still up, cheering the One Big Fights and the Go Ateneos. I looked around to see the some 7 thousand Ateneans doing the same. I wondered, are these guys crazy? How can they not be disappointed with the team? Then, as the last quarter started, as our chances of making history diminished, as my head was sore of praying, it hit me. I take pride in calling myself a diehard, and I despise the posers who only attend big games, and the fan-girls who dont even know whats going on in the court because they dont feel any pain when we lose, yet Im the one who looses hope the fastest. Sometimes, you just need to man the heck up, and cheer; cheer even if it kills you, cheer when you lose a possession, just cheer. Because thats what a true die-hard is. Thats what were supposed to do. Your love for the team shouldnt make you be disappointed when they fail, it should push you to support them when they dont, and even when they do. So I slowly stood up, with my hand in the air screaming, get that ball! Kiefer started hitting his threes, and the team worked as one. Ryan Buenafe hit a big three and two free throws to seal the deal. And I jumped in the air, and gave my father a big chest bump. I left the big dome, finally, feeling victorious. As I ate a hearty Chinese dinner with my family, I felt safe. I knew that despite the teams inefficiencies, they can come up big when needed. I knew that we will take the crown this year, and maybe, just maybe, even next year. SERVICE BEYOND LIFE
By Jolo Crisol It would be a hot, humid afternoon in the streets of Naga City. The hustle and bustle of the place seemingly decreased, with people on the balconies of their houses fanning themselves. There would be, amidst the trash collectors and the garbage trucks, a man. The man would be sporting his simple clothes, with his simple tsinelas being the simple man that he is. The simple man though, receives stares from people, slowly stepping out of their houses to strike a conversation, and get a handshake. The simple man would, after having his face torn with smiles shared with the others, continue helping with the trash. Sometimes, there would be applauding at the sight of this, since it was truly a magical sight. The simple man though, after a tiring day, returns to his office, suits up in his barong, and rides a limo to Malacanang for a meeting with the president. Good afternoon, Mr. Robredo. How are you? The president would greet him, and the meeting would proceed. The truth was: the simple man wasnt so simple. He chose to be. Jesse was not just human, he was a symbol; an eternal symbol of hope whose spirit would rub off on the rotten scums of our country. That there would arise, slowly, a group of public servants, who do their job the right way. And then everybody else would be the same. And then, our country would stand tall. And to think, we were almost there. Who knew, that one mans ideals would infect a thousand others? In honor of you Jesse, here are four traits I think you had that made us almost get there 1. HONESTY Jesse believed in this more than anything else. He wanted for LGOs to be able to show how well they spent their money. Perhaps, this was his trademark. He worked for our government to have this. And for someone to devote almost his whole life to working towards this goal, maybe, is a sacrifice comparable to what the man on the 1 peso coin did. If you were to look at Jesses face, you wouldnt see a single blemish, in terms of honesty. More than that, the man was a miser. The president of the Guyom na Palad (Misers Foundation,) as jokingly referred to by his fellow Naga countrymen, would demand a receipt for every single purchase his government made, therefore decreasing the number of

light-fingered officials in Naga. 2. DEDICATION Jesse was the type who never restrained himself to his desk, which is the ultimate mark of dedication. (Especially with our governments standards today, if you were to let me be a little biased.) Imagine having a plethora of paperwork in front of you, having to finish that by the end of the day, and still gathering the strength to go out and help with the garbage. He would wake by 5 a.m., leave for city hall by 7, and work until 5 p.m. If all our officials spent this much time working, could you even fathom how much more improved our nation will be? He would go to wakes at 8 p.m. to visit the departed family members of Naga natives. 3. LEADERSHIP Robredo was a manager, and problem solver by heart. He was a former San Miguel employee, finished in De La Salle, and earned an MBA from U.P. He carried these principles and ideals unto his administration as Naga mayor, and ultimately to his stay as secretary. Former Naga administrator Frank Mendoza said: Nauuna pa siya sa bumbero kung may sunog, baha o aksidente. Pag may bagyo, nasa labas siya, naglilinis, nagpapala. Masaya siyang gawin ang mga mundane tasks. He had a scientific way of approaching problems as Vice Mayor Gabriel Burdado had said. His leadership pushed others to do the same as he. Robredo was the pied piper of goodness. He abhorred TraPos Traditional Politicians those who are, as they say in the vernacular, Malakas sa salita, ngunit mahina sa gawa. 4. PERFECTIONISM Naga, a somehow dystopian, insignificant city, had turned into paradise Robredos trademark, his trophy that he carried until the very last seconds, until his very last breaths, until the plane was buried into the dirt. Naga was proof, that the heart of a warrior can surpass the obstacle of any villain. Jesse turned Naga City Hall into one of the most organized in the land. How? By improving every single rotten detail, and not stopping until the entire batch is fresh. If theres a hero I would look up to, it wouldnt be one of strength, or one who could fly. I would follow the weak. The weak, the weary, who despite their fears, inefficiencies, carried on. I would follow Jesse, the normal Filipino. The Filipino who chose to be more than that. SUPREME CROWN OF THORNS

It seems to be as if Renato Coronas impeachment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is the heat of the moment. For weeks now, it has been the talk of the town, and has been relentlessly discussed not only by the current events afficionados, but as well as the commoners and those of the masses. TV networks and radio stations still consider it to be of public appeal and have been running their segments on the impeachment, non-stop. One comes to ponder upon though, is something like this worthy of the attention it is being given? Events such as the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, surely deserve to be framed as if not amongst, but the most earth-shattering yet miraculous events, which have transpired in our countrys very rich and full timeline. Although, is the impeachment of a man who wears a gown, lazing around on a highchair, pounding a hammer on a table deserve this? I say, yes. For we are not only trying to dethrone the Chief Justice, we are also trying to reveal the man behind him and the secrets, which he has hidden. Really, who is Renato Corona? What has he been trying to hide, or has it been the former president who has blanketed the true Renato Corona from us? Maybe it was his own decision that got him into the hot waters he is currently in. How does a man, standing in that kind of a position, in the hierarchy of the government afford the things he now possesses? Probably, he does deserve to wear a Crown of Thorns, as his name implies. These are the questions, which the impeachment process is trying to reveal. Therefore, if we want justice to be served, we must be patient. On the other hand, maybe all this wouldnt have happened if not for the main man himself, Renato Corona, and his poor decisions. It is not enough reason that the president offered you a spot as the Chief Justice through a midnight appointment, that you accept the offer. Just because youre the president, much less Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, surely doesnt make you God, nor does it make everything you do right. It is a well-known fact that late appointments are forbidden by the law. Yet, Corona still accepted GMAs plead. There was obviously something behind her plan. So, she was fearless in appointing Corona, who could probably be one of her many Garcillanos, or could back her up if she gets thrown to the courts when shes found guilty; too late. On the other hand, as time passes by, the conduction of the trial starts to become more and more as controversial as the case itself. It is being criticized and so many questions have been raised on how it is being conducted that we fail to realize that our actions are also adding to its delay. It doesnt simply mean that the people leading the trial are the only ones that can do something about it. We, the people, also have as much influence on the case as them; we are part of it. If we keep on putting the case down and the people involved, than we will never go anywhere else but down. But, if we just shut up and look at the good side of it, than things are definitely bound to go right. One can only do so much to change society; it is yet societys decision to change and quit being so incorrigible.

After learning about the state of public education in the Philippines, I find it very sad that while we, the Ateneo Grade School students, take studying for granted, other children who are less fortunate have to work first just before they go to school every day. It is a very grim reality that the education of some poor children suffers because their parents, though they try hard, cannot earn enough money to support their families and need their children to get a job even if they are still young. This often interferes with the youth learning and can result in lack of certain skills such as math and communication. Because of this, most children cannot get good jobs in the future. In my opinion, I think that the education in our country is not very efficient in the poorer parts of the Philippines. This is so because many children cannot go to school and the public schools are not well-equipped with the right materials. There are public schools that lack chairs, tables, books and even classroom space, as compared to private schools with the fancy architecture, air-conditioned rooms and complex gadgets. I dont expect to see public schools with these, but I hope that these schools can be fixed or improved by our government. I think that something should be done about this nationwide crisis because this issue might jeopardize our country. There are approximately 646,449 children not in school and that affects our future. Perhaps, the government can help as well in this current problem by having the public schools repaired, supply them with more books and desks, and maybe even putting public libraries nearby so that the people can study and learn outside of school hours. Aside from that, maybe the parents can be offered jobs that give higher pay so that they no longer have to ask their kids to help them work. Someday, I hope that the education in our country will improve, making it a better place for everyone.

A Late Postscript to New Years Eve

By: Kynan Taclobao Whenever Filipinos celebrate the coming of a new year, we have a lot of traditions. We have our media noche, or the dinner in New Years Eve, and some people wear polka-dotted attires. And of course, fireworks. Originating from China, fireworks are believed to ward off evil spirits and guarantees good luck for the year. When I was younger, I used to love fireworks. I loved their bright and flashy colors. I also loved how their shape changed and shifted. But as I grew older, I asked myself: Why? Do we really need fireworks? When I ask these questions to people, they say that its just for the fun, that I shouldnt take this issue seriously because fireworks are just for entertainment. This year, some 500 people have been injured due to fireworks-related incidents. Compared to previous years, the number decreased by a substantial amount, though I think, that it is still a lot. Fireworks also release toxins that pollute the air, and water when in contact. I am not condemning people who use fireworks, for I myself am one of them. Using fireworks is not wrong, though not entirely right. I did not write this article merely to criticize, but to inform. Think of it like this: cars release smoke as well, but I do not disapprove of using cars. To sum it up, I guess what Im trying to say is that if there is a plus point, there is also a negative. This has been said time and time again, but I want to reiterate it: we must use these things responsibly.

FREEDOM IN THE STREETS?

With the end of year 2011 came a new dawn for the people of the Middle East. Dictators have been overthrown, and those remaining are seemingly gripped with fear, quickly reacting to the slightest signs of protest with either a heavy-handed crackdown or reforms and welfare programs meant to appease the discontented masses. While turmoil still reigns in other parts of the Middle East like Syria and Yemen, countries such as Egypt, Libya and Tunisia have already reaped the rewards of the Arab Spring. In Tunisia, elections have been held for a new parliament, with the task of forming a new constitution. Egypt has done likewise, with elections going smoothly, albeit with questions surrounding the future role and influence of their interim military leaders, some even from the old regime. In Libya, the hard task of retaining control among the numerous armed rebel militias awaits their transitional government, but change has gone with no major hitches, so far. The situation, at least for now, seems relatively positive and stable. While it may seem that freedom and democracy is already in the air, there is still a sense of uncertainly in the Middle East, of whether democracy can truly survive, and perhaps, thrive. This is especially the case in Egypt, where the military leaders, which have served as the temporary leaders of Egypt since the downfall of its former president and dictator, Hosni Mubarak. Some have doubts on whether the military is truly dedicated to supporting democracy, with its crackdowns on the activists protesting the interim governments actions and efforts to preserve its powerful influence within society. Already, some of its security forces have come under fire for its alleged abuse of protestors. The offices of non-government organizations (NGOs), funded by aid from the West, have been raided, under the pretense of suppressing foreign influence. Ironically, from the United States alone, the aid for the Egyptian military, to the tune of US$ 1,307.3 Million, dwarfs the millions of dollars in aid from the United States to these NGOs estimated to be at US$ 25 Million a virtual pittance in comparison. Also clouding the prospects of democracy in the Middle East is the possibility of ethnic and religious infighting and violence. In Libya, there still is a threat of clashes set along tribal lines, most especially with the dispersal of weapons coming after the fall of the old regime. It still uncertain if all the weapons from the old regime and those taken by the rebel militias are fully accounted for. In Egypt, there have reports of violence between the Coptic Christian minority and the Muslim majority. And throughout the Middle East, there is still a fear that extremist religious groups may try to take advantage of the instability brought by the Arab Spring to increase their influence, and perhaps take power. Yes, freedom and, perhaps, democracy, has been brought to streets of the Arab world through the Arab Spring movement. Along with it, however, comes great responsibility, as the clich goes. And, this responsibility, which is of utmost and great importance, is to maintain these newly-gained freedoms and rights, to defend it against those who might want otherwise. Let us hope that this, true freedom, will prevail amid the uncertainty. Freedom in the streets? Not yet. This is because the struggle for democracy is not yet done. It has just begun.

Destination Unreachable
by Joachim Navarro Children in a remote province in the Philippines wake up at 3:00 am. They walk, ever so slowly, to a murky river. There, they swim across. They change clothes, walk more, and reach their destination the school. That is a mere size of a fly, honestly, compared to the Goliath-like modes of transportation that we use we go to school- possibly in long, large vans and luxury cars with Harman/Kardon speakers and maybe even Intel inside (Yes, Intel Atom processors will be targeted for cars and were recently used for the SSC Bloodhound, a jet car with a top speed of 1,000 mph). With the help of these kinds of transportation, we can reach high school, college and even a dream job. The poor families in the remote provinces, though, cannot always afford to send their (usually) many kids to school, less so a decent means of transportation. They will have to alternate their kids between school and jobs, or they will have to quit their childrens school temporarily. That is untimely with prices and crises on the rise. Moreover, there is the government officials, sans (that means except or without) President Aquino, are becoming more and more corrupt, leading to shortage of funds. The money that could have been used to feed more than 1,000 families had been used to buy a shiny Porsche 911 Turbo whose purchaser was a government official who already had more than he needed. Education is the basis of knowledge, and without it, what will our future leaders be? We can choose from poor kids and malicious out-of-control juvenile delinquents. And face it these delinquents are educated! Poor people cannot afford education for long, yet they are armed with God-like traits and values that a person should normally have. Yet, where is the education that fills them with knowledge that is, by bill of nature, required to become a government official? Lack of education, corruption, and poverty may be on the rise, but faith in God will trample all these hindrances. There is still hope in our country- one that will rise like the sun in our flag. This may be Destination Unreachable or Mission Impossible for now, but that is going to be changed later, as long as, once again, we believe that God is going to guide and help us out of this perilous state.

Justice Delayed or Justice Denied?

It has been some 13 years of waiting for the cabin crew of Philippine Airlines; waiting for the time when they shall triumph against the seemingly unsolvable loop which the courts have left for them to solve. The story of all this started in 1998. My mom, who was part of the case, told me every single fragment of the sad tale. She was at home when she heard someone dropping a letter in the mailbox. She opened the pink letter and read it with tears running down her long and gloomy face. She was just informed that she was being retrenched from her job as a PAL stewardess. Retrenched meaning she was removed from her position or fired. Id like to call it though, being stripped of her dignity, the job she loved so much. The cause of all this being the pilots, who went on strike due to the extended number of hours they were being made to fly the planes by PAL, without any extra pay. Since there were no pilots flying any planes at the time, there werent any people who could ride them, thus resulting in a major drop in the amount of money the company was earning. PAL then fired more than 1,400 stewards and stewardesses with their alibi being their loss of proper funds to pay the workers. The union officers, or the people who were in charge of ensuring the welfare of the workers, took no hesitation in filing a lawsuit against PAL for illegal retrenchment. The workers ended up winning the case, and PAL on the other hand was proven guilty. Its lawyers appealed many times in the past, but they were again, declared guilty, three times in fact. Thirteen years, going 14 after, the cycle still has not been halted. It was a few months ago that the workers finally got their first taste of victory. Although small and short lived, it was a victory in its own right nonetheless. The Supreme Court declared that from then on, no more appeals from PAL would be entertained. Also, their decision of declaring PAL guilty, and that they should pay all the workers the complete salaries they should have received if not for their cruel and illegal retrenchment up to the current day was final. Everyones hearts skipped a beat out of a mixture of shock and joy. Alas, their long journey was over, and all that was left was the final voting of the judges, which turned out to be in the workers favor. Their Facebook page was flooded with posts by the stewards and stewardesses. The victory was truly sweet. It was on that day, that every single steward and stewardess felt triumphant. But as Ive said, it was very short-lived. Not much long after that, the speech of Midas Marquez, the Supreme Court spokesman was televised on the news. He said that the wrong division dealt with the case and that they will have to figure out which would be the proper one to do so. Therefore, the whole process of appeals and hearing the case would be repeated. If the workers justice was being delayed from being given to them, it was at that moment, denied. The PAL workers were promised their justice long, long ago. This just shows the inefficiency and how unfair our judges are when it comes to helping people of less power and influence. For thirteen years, the workers still havent received their part of the bargain, in exchange for all their hardships. For high profile cases such as that of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyos, all it took was a former president who is accused committing a national crime and a whole lot of news reports about it for them to make a decision and act on it. For PALs case, which is not as well known, it couldnt even take that they were proven right three times in federal court, that they were waiting for 13 years, and that it was Lucio Tan, the owner of PAL, who is charged of tax evasion but still appears to not be in jail for it, who kept on claiming that he was right for them to give the workers the money they deserve. Their insensitivity is simply unfathomable. When a case is all over the news and on the headlines, it is given such great importance and attended to very quickly by our judges, but when a case is not as known by the public in contrast to others, they seem to disregard it and not set its level of importance as high as those of others. Is this the image our judges are trying to set for themselves? Our judges, who are supposedly experts in the field of law and can tell, in a blink of an eye, who is guilty and who is not. We expect to develop into a First World country, and to no longer be classified as an extreme wealth-extreme poverty type of a nation, but small things like this, where its supposed to be a done deal already, cant be dealt with quickly, and most importantly, properly. Aside from the fact of how unfair they are, they also have shown me their disability to abide by their promises and decisions. The judges told us that their decision was final. Final means the end, but apparently, for our judges, it is not. They also promised the workers that since they would have to transfer the case to a different court, and that the whole process would have to be repeated, with the court hearings and all that, they would give priority to it for them to fix their embarrassing mistake. Surprise, surprise! Many months after, they still havent. What good will it do if you transfer the case to another court? What difference will it make? In conclusion, I along with the other 1,400 stewards and stewardesses have lost a chunk of trust in our judges and how they deal with things. But, we are still hoping with all our might that the power and grace of God will prevail even in the hardest of times and when dealing with the craziest of judges. You be the judge here this time. Was justice delayed once more, or forever denied?

A YEAR AFTER SENDONG:

A Recollection, a Reflection, by Cedric Lim Bagyong Sendong. Some 1000 deaths, 450 survivors and 65,000 families affected. This calamity is compared to the 1991 0rmoc flood and the more recent Typhoon Ondoy that both caused a lot of deaths. Many people are suffering from this calamity that happened December last year. Prayer and faith are what the affected people are now holding to. During the tragedy, many people had donated water, food supplies and other goods. Ateneo de Manila University and other schools like De La Salle University had also donated. The Ateneo, in particular, raised funds and accepted donations either through cash or kind. The incumbent president, Benigno Simeon Noynoy Aquino III, an alumnus of Ateneo, ordered the release of funds to restructure the affected roads and bridges. The administration also shelled out some P-1.3 billion for the victims of the tragedy. The government has also donated a pondo for the affected and the victims. They have donated about 1.3 Billion pesos. These donated goods and funds will truly help these affected Filipinos because this is what they really are going to need. This is because of their houses that went with the flood and the cars that piled up and fell in the creeks and dikes of certain cities like Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. There were also countries who helped us. They are also gave goods to these affected places through shipping. International groups like the United Nations are planning to give aid for the affected people in Mindanao and certain places in Visayas. After this calamity the people affected are trying to move on from what nature has done. What we all know is that we who are not affected have been praying for them. I hope that this calamity will be another lesson for us Filipinos. To always follow and be aware. To always obey and pray. Let us all pray for these people and always remember to keep the faith.

A game better than the 5 million copy-selling and 25 sports game of the year-winning NBA 2K12? The Dunk and three-point contest back? Team USA vs. the 1992 Dream Team? Yes, all of these in much awaited NBA 2K13. For the first time ever, all the dribble moves have been mapped to the right analog stick as well as shooting, passing and post moves. Yes, no

more need for L2 in spin moves, hesitations, reverse lay-ups and floaters. For some people, this might actually make the game harder, but for me, a self-proclaimed pro who can compete nationally, this makes the gameplay smoother and more noob-friendly since it lessens the chance of bad shots and passes. Dynamic shot generator added. That means shots are now made on the fly, with all-new collision physics created in real time. Revamped passing system. Improved fast break passing gives the player more control. Lob city here we come! Signature skills: Each player has a unique ability that can alter the course of the game. The expanded version of the My Player, My Career has been added. It has features such as a fully-customizable my player, which makes it even more addicting than the ones in the past season. Visual Concepts goal was to blur the line between your players on- and off-court lives. The games commentators will mention things you do off the court. At the same time, a social media area similar to the Twitter integration in Madden NFL 13s Connected Careers mode, but without the official branding features comments on your in-game performance.Those comments come from fellow NBA players, legends like Michael Jordan, media personalities including ESPNs J.A. My Eaglet teammates and I watched Meet the Robinsons a few weeks ago. It is about a boy who travels in time to fix the time machine he broke. He is against a guy in an evil bowler hat. This guy tries to conquer the city and ruin the boys future but, the boy saves his future and the guy from his evil bowler hat. After this, he goes back to the present. I liked the movie because it taught me to never give up and to keep moving forward. I would like to recommend this to my schoolmates because it will teach them that if you do not give up you can make a difference in this world. Watch it and make a difference!

Two different worlds, one game, can that really happen? Well, it did happen and the game was called Street Fighter X Tekken. The two games finally merged into one. Two games that revolutionized the word, FIGHTING. With the work and decisions of the makers of both games, they decide to make the games to mesh as a unit to bring an awesome Kick-butt, Action-packed game for the PS3 and XBOX 360. This game featured a crossover between the characters of both worlds. Characters from Tekken like: Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, Marshall Law, Paul Phoenix, and many more. Also characters from Street Fighter, like Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Sakura, and more. This game shows you can fight against your friends and other people. In exhibition mode you can choose your favorite character and choose your partner, it can be two from Tekken, two from Street Fighter, or one each from the two brands. This game can never bore and I can tell. This crossover game will keep people happy for a long time. Since it has a variety of game modes and characters to choose from, so this game will be epic! So I would rate this game 4.5/5 since this will bring fans to appreciate the world of fighting and gaming even more

Pokemon: Black and White 2

Pokemon Black and White are both the newest additions to the Pokemon game series and the beginning of the 5th generation. Featuring a new region, pokemon, moves and 2 new battle styles: Triple and Rotation Battles. Now, all the excitement has moved on to their sequels: Pokemon Black and White 2. With, the new forms of the legendary Pokemon: Kyurem, Tornados, Thundurus, Landorus and Keldeo, new cities, items and characters, it will make pokemon a whole new world. Starting of, the Unova region is now frozen thanks to the main legendary pokemon of the game: Kyurem. But, that is not all.. Team Plasma has come back and Kyurem has obtained the power to combine with Zekrom or Reshiram (Which explains the cover photos). And, it is up to you to stop them. This will be the 3rd and 4th games of the 5th generation, and if were lucky enough there might even be a 6th generation.

Amnesia vs Slender: Battle of the Horror

Amnesia. A survival game that travels into the deepest, darkest pit of your mind. Slender. Another survival game on a suited man with a hunger for flesh. Both games have been a hit success since their development and debut. And obviously both games have kept us up at night after our first try. But what makes these games so scary and which best qualifies as the horror game of the year. Well, Lets look at the facts. Amnesia: The Dark Decent is the original Amnesia survival based game for PC & Mac as the game allows you to make custom maps. The game was created by Frictional Games who have also created the Penumbra series. One thing that makes the game hard is that it gives you know choice of weapons what so ever when you face a monster & the only way to save yourself is to run. You must also collect sanity potions from keeping you insane and dying. Light is another problem as the entire game will be impossible to see without light so you have to wind oil for your lamp, and theres the trouble of finding a lamp. The endless survey of puzzles is the main struggle of players as each puzzle is harder and even more different each time.

Now on to Slender. Slender was created by Parsec Productions and is also a survival game. Unlike in Amnesia where the goal is based on the map, Slender gives one objective and that is to collect 8 pages containing messages about the Slender-Man The SlenderMan, the main antagonist of the game is the scariest part of the game. Just like in amnesia you have no weapons, but you also have nothing else besides your flashlight to protect you from Slendy. Slender-Man can appear anywhere, even in front of you depending on how many pages youve collected, how long youve been looking for pages or how long youve had your flashlight off. Oh, and did I mention, youre trapped in a forest with a fence surrounding it so you cant escape. Now after looking at both games, who wins: Amnesia or Slender?

The Avengers Movie Review By Nico Chan The Avengers is a movie based on the graphic novel with the same name. This film was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed and scripted by Joss Whedon, and features several renowned actors, such as Robert Downey Jr. who plays as Tony Stark who is Iron Man, Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, Mark Ruffalo, who plays as Dr. Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth, who plays the Thunder god, Thor, Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow/ Natasha Romanov, Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, Tom Hiddleston, who plays The Trickster god, Loki, Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders, who plays Agent Maria Hill, and Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury. Cast: 5/5 The actors played their roles very well in the movie, with cinema thespians, ranging from Robert Downey Jr. to Cobie Smulders. Plot: 4/5 Though the story line was very good, there were small holes in the plot that were never explained, such as how long Thors time limit is on Earth, or how Loki managed to gain contact with the alien race that he uses to invade the mortal realm. Accuracy: 2/5

The Hunger Games Movie Review: The Odds Are In Their Favor by Gabriel Antonio V. Rivera In life, uncertainty comes out at situations you least expect. I personally thought the movie was going to be horrible, until I watched The Hunger Games. I had completely lost faith in books- turned- into- movies until Suzanne Collins New York Times Best Seller,; The Hunger Games, was turned into a full- length film. And by full- length I mean a very long film which I think is unnecessary since greatness can be as minimal as a five- minute short film, but somehow, Gary Ross, its director, pulled it off by showing us spectacular and detailed events in the dystopian society called Panem. The Capitol reigns over Panem with its larger-than-life iron fists which dominantly proceeds to the innuendo that the Capitol symbolizes corruption, greed and thirst for revenge in all of us, leading to the maniacal retribution that is The Hunger Games. Admits all the worry in the citizens of Panem, there lies a hero destined to be the representation of humanity and rebellion against the masterminds behind the society they live in. Each scene was full of content that it could be made a film in itself. A kind of film that could be one of those classics when time goes by. The Hunger Games sets the standards higher to all movies in any genre as it is filled with so many distinctions already. From the forming love triangle to the violent storytelling, The Hunger Games is on its way to Blockbuster glory with its riveting plot and important values set out to teach everyone. As humanity progresses, so does everything else. Evil will become more cruel, corruption will be more prominent, but as long as our goal to live as one is still beating, then the odds will always be in our favor.

Even if the movie was very action-packed, the story itself does not coincide with the comic books it is based on. Some mistakes were quite small, such as how the Mjolnir (the hammer that Thor owns) was designed, but there were also large holes in the story, such as why didnt the other members of the Avengers Initiative join in the battle? Surely they couldve used all the help they could get? Movie: 5/5

The movie itself was, in my opinion, amazing. There was an even amount of hilarious and serious moments in the story, which balanced everything out so it wasnt too much of either element. Also, the film was very action-packed, with most of the heroes activities being shown. It really is an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Animations and Effects: 5/5 The producers used all of our current technology to their advantage, with CGI and Editing. The movie had great special effects and never made mistakes in their editing. Final Rating: 4/5 Definitely a must-watch, with an A+ Cast, great effects, and good plot, it is a great film, with only a few plot holes in it.

S.H.I.E.L.D. DATABASE: Avengers Movie Review

The Avengers, if you havent heard about it yet, is a comic that has recently been adapted as a film. The movie, which is in the action/comedy genre, is based on characters that were in the original comic such as Iron Man who was played by Robert Downey Jr., The Hulk who was played by Mark Ruffalo, Thor who was played by Chris Hemsworth and many other characters that were in the comic that were also played by critically acclaimed actors. The story is about The Avengers trying to locate the cosmic cube or the Tesseract because it holds unlimited power and can be used by the movies main antagonist, Loki, to unleash an evil space alien army to conquer the Earth. (Sorry! No ending spoilers ;]) First of all, the effects in the movie were perfect. It looked very realistic (eEven The Hulk looked real!). Second, the sounds. I think the music used in the movie was appropriate but in some parts I felt that the sound was too loud. Next point, the story. While I was watching, I felt excited because obviously, the movies plot was well- written containing balanced portions of suspense, excitement, action and adventure, so I would say that the story is awesome. Overall, we cant say that this movie is perfect because it had some missing things that wouldve made it better (Like Antman who was in the comic) but still, its worth the money. I highly recommend this to comic junkies and Marvel movie fanatics or even just the average movie-watching person because its really good and worth the time taken waiting in line and the money spent on the tickets.

Game Review: Dawnguard

Dawnguard is an expansion pack for Skyrim. It was released in June 26, 2012(Xbox 360) and August 2, 2012(PC). You need Skyrim to play this and it is only available for download. The plot of Dawnguard involves Harkon, a vampire who plans to plunge the world in eternal darkness by destroying the sun. However an ancient order of vampire hunters known as the Dawnguard seek to stop him. It is up to you to choose which side you will pick. Dawnguard also has many new features. One of these is two large new places known as the Soul Cairn and the Forgotten Vale. There are also other new places in this game. Your character also gets new weapons like the crossbow(awesome) and dragon bone weapons(even more awesome) . You can also become a vampire lord, it is one of the best powers in the whole game. But wait, theres more. You can even make your character a stronger vampire or werewolf. You can even fight on horses now. But with all that new stuff you get, you need enemies to test it on right? Well there are gargoyles, death hounds, more powerful dragons, frost giants and many more new things that can kill your character in an instant. If your unhappy with how your character looks, this game already solved that problem. A new character will be able to change almost everything about your character( you still cant change your characters gender so dont get any weird ideas). These are most of the features of the game, but there is still more. I pretty much described the whole game already so you probably be wont surprised that much when you play it( its still awesome though). This game has a rating of 8/10 from me. I wont tell you why, so you will actually play the game and see for yourself.

Lifes a Game to learn from: The Hunger Games Movie Review

An example of this kind that just premiered this summer was The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games originated from the highly acclaimed novel written by Suzanne Collins. Due to the high fan base of the novel, the rights of the novel were bought by Lions Gate Entertainment. The Movie was directed by Gary Ross. The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark. Alongside them are Liam Hemsworth, Alexander Ludwig and Elizabeth Banks. The movie takes place in a more futuristic time in a place called: Panem. The country is ruled by their government, The Capitol. For their reminder of their power to the residences, they give orders to the Twelve12 Ddistricts to draw two2 children in the ages 12-18. These 24 children are to compete to the death til one of them stands alone in the areana. Surprisingly, in the drawing at Katniss Ddistrict, 12, she wasnt chosen. Soon they all reveal it was her sister, Prim. Katniss, scared for her little sister, takes her place to compete for the 74th Hunger Games. Due to the breath-taking, amazing, seat staying movie made, this movie deserved the awards it earned such as for the MTV awards and several others. The movie was voted as Most Anticipated Movie beating The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. During the opening weekend, the film broke records making $152.5 million in North America making itself the fourth movie in North America just behind The Avengers. .The movie wasnt the perfect mirror-image of the book, but they showed what fans of the book were imagining in the book. Some parts were added, and some parts were taken out. The movie was voted as Most Anticipated Movie beating The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. During the opening weekend, the film broke records making $152.5 million in North America making itself the fourth movie in North America just behind The Avengers. Due to the breath-taking, amazing, seat staying movie made, this movie deserved the awards it earned such as for the MTV awards and several others. The movie and book did share some things at the end for both: Katniss saw herself more than a tribute of the games or just another follower of the Capitol. Not just that, she gave inspiration for others wherein she didnt even know she did.

On graduation day, I took him aside and said, Halika nga dito. Magpapakuha na tayo ng picture, kasi pag sikat ka na, baka di ko na magawa. His trademark grin and Hindi ah! were immortalized in the pic, and I said, Pag lumaki ulo mo Kulit, tandaan mo, ako unang unang babatok sa yo. Even as we parted ways as teacher and student, I was his fan for life. Far away from the spotlight yet, I watched as he struggled against La Salle Zobel in the UAAP Juniors championship game at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on a rainy afternoon, eventually losing that year. I remember on one of his visits during his HS freshman year, some grade schoolers were already asking for his autograph, a scene that would be repeated a hundredfold in the years to come. That loss was the last one in his HS years as he helped steer the Juniors to a 3 peat in his succeeding years. When he was about to graduate from high school and hounded by the controversy surrounding where he was going to play college ball, he shared his dream of playing abroad, of the possibility that he could get into a good basketball program in the US. While I secretly hoped he would stay at the Ateneo, what else could I do but support and give encouragement. When I got the text that he was going to Ateneo, I breathed a sigh of relief but a small part of me is wishing the dream is just put on hold and not discarded. By graduation that year, he was at peace with himself and his choice. To his credit, Kief has remained the same even after all these years. He has never failed to drop by for a short visit, sometimes at the oddest times, like the middle of the school day. When he started playing for the Seniors, I had to keep reminding him, Hindi ka na pwedeng basta basta dumating. Pagkakaguluhan ka na. But he has remained humble, and that I believe is the secret to his success. He can easily turn his back on all that was and embrace his new celebrity status, but that has never been the case. Whenever we get together, there are still traces of that 12 year old boy, more endearing now that he has grown into a man. Watching him on the court these days, larger than life, transformed into the Phenom, i just cant help but smile. Years before I wrote this message on my Christmas card to him, Hindi ko alam kung sumpa o biyaya ang pagkakalagay mo sa klase ko, pero ang sigurado ako, nagpapasalamat ako na nakilala kita. It turned out to be a very big blessing after all. And the best part of it is, beyond all the hype and the glitz, he remains to beat least to me the same old Kulit.

Prequel to a Phenom

This particular banner was very visible at the AteneoFEU game last Saturday and I couldnt help but turn wistful and say to myself, Akalain mo nga naman. I met the subject of said banner in June, 2006 when I entered the classroom of 7-Berchmans. (Little did I know that class and that year would prove life-changingbut that is the subject of another post. ) There he was, class number 30, who was literally squirming in his seat, unable to suppress the boundless energy he seemed to have in his 12 year old body. Kiefer Isaac C. Ravena, it said on the class list. His rep preceded him. Transferee from La Salle Greenhills in grade 6. Reportedly recruited for his basketball skills. This scrap of a boy who always had a grin or a smirk on his face. A few days later at a general assembly of the entire grade level, he and I were seated beside each other, a precaution on my part, to keep him from chatting with his seatmates. Well, did that stop him from chatting? Of course not. He found a new chatmate. Me. Nevermind that at that time I had a reputation as well. I was one of the most feared teachers in the level. He either didnt know or he was entirely unfazed by my rep. He proceeded to make a running commentary of the assembly. I remember each teacher who was being introduced had a lookalike, and even I couldnt suppress a smile because he was spot on in describing each one. As early as then, he had a charisma that was hard not to notice. That set the way he and I would interact. For most of the time, I would be able to channel his energy into more productive pursuits like being a dancer in several school programs. He was a whirlwind in the classroom, all over the place, motormouth all the way. To his classmates, it became a source of amusement that he would always stop short of that point where I would lose my patience and scream at him. Hence the observation, Hindi mo naman pinapagalitan si Kiefer Maam. This earned him the nickname I call him to this day, Kulit. Of course, the basketball skills were hard to ignore even then. He and Chuckie Dumrique would steer my class to the Intramurals championship that year. And they even did it for football and volleyball as well. I remember his batchmates good naturedly booing him because he continued to play his best in an exhibition game against the teachers, when everyone else was just trying to make the teachers look good.

It wasnt hurrahs and the sound of squeaky rubber shoes that opened the graduation ceremonies of our Grade 7 brothers last March 22 at the High school Covered Courts. It was the seemingly boring and sleepy symphony being played by the Quezon City Band. Once the Grade 7 students were done marching, and were seated, the program proper was initiated by the Philippine National Anthem, and of course, a prayer-the usual stuff. After endless speeches were done, by the student representative, Master Jom Kimpo, and the School Administrators, the awardees were asked to stand up and receive their GOLD (painted) medals. There were four categories in which you could garner a medal: Co-Curricular Awards, Academic Contest Awards, St. Ignatius Awards, and the Academic Honours. It was not a surprise that most of our Eaglet members garnered many awards to deck their walls with! After the tedious awarding ceremony, Fr. Kit introduced the guest speaker, Fr. Emmanuel L. Alfonso, S.J. The speech was centred mainly on how student leaders should grasp the mission left by Rizal, how to live out his call every day, and to give importance to his legacy, and what the Ateneo is trying to instil in us. You thought the awarding of the GOLD (painted) medals were tedious? Listen to this: The Handing of the Diplomas to All the Students of Grade 7, Batch 2012. It was only fun when you were the one receiving the diploma. But other than that, it was entirely boring. Following the Handing of Diplomas, all the Graduates were asked to stand up, to recite the Pledge of an Ateneo Alumnus. After the Grade 7 Graduates recited their pledge, they sung the Ateneo Graduation Hymn, the icing on the cake in every Atenean Commencement Ceremony. Through joy and tears, through the laughing years. We sing our battle song. Win or lose, its the school we choose. This is the place where we belong!

In the 8 years I spent in the Ateneo Grade School, I have made a lot of mistakes but when I graduated, I realized I got all my medals because of these mistakes. I learned from them and it formed me into a better person. This is the reason why we shouldt be afraid to make mistakes even if we do it again and again. Before I go to the Ateneo High School, I would like to thank my parents who supported me throughout my whole grade school life, my teachers who disciplined me to the person I am now, my friends who have always been with me through good times and bad times, and the Lord who gave me the opportunity to study in the Ateneo Grade School.

Its the end of my Grade School life, but its only a new beginning for me nonetheless. I was glad to have accomplished my goal to graduate with honors. I was a feat of awesome perseverance and determination. Now that I am leaving the school that I called home for eight years, I am glad to have left a good name for myself. Though its sad for me to leave, I will be leaving a legacy. But the essence of what Im trying to say is: Always try and never surrender, gambling is bad, but life is like one big game so you can never tell.

And the day finally came, when our journey in the Grade School comes to an end. Though, I have been here much shorter as compared to most of my batch mates, I can truly say that I have learned and experienced a lot in Ateneo. It has ingrained in me the importance of hard work and determination. It taught me the significance of friendship. It sparked my passion for learning and discovering new things. It inspired m to do my best, not only for myself, but for my family and for the Lord. In short, the Ateneo shaped and molded me as a person. All of those times spent studying, answering, researching and cramming, finally paid off.

Congrats, AGS 2012! :D Win or lose its the school we choose, this is the place where we belong! Mary for YOU, for your white and blue, we pray you keep us Mary, constantly true. We pray you keep us, Mary, faithful to you!

After eight long years of hard work, failures, arguments, problems, as well as awards, recognition, honors, wins and friendships formed, here I am, newly graduated. The Ateneo de Manila Grade School has been a real second home for me, and I thank everyone, especially my friends, who were with me all along. The medals I received last March 22 are not just for myself, but also for my parents, family, friends, other people who supported me, and of course, God. I am looking forward to this next chapter in my life, and I hope that the people who were with me during my Grade School journey will also be with me in High School. AMDG!

Dear Ateneo, Eight years ago, I started as a five-year-old boy who would cry whenever he wasnt in the classroom ten minutes before flag ceremony. Yes, I was that eager Prep boy who wanted to be always early in class and got disheartened so easily if I was late for being early. I recall some mommies reporting to my Mom how they saw me crying while running to my classroom, all the while stressed out that I was already late for being early. Crazy, right? Fast forward to eight years, and I am proud to say, Ive changed a lot for the better. To some, this may reflect negatively on my image. But for me, it shows how Ateneo Grade School has succeeded in molding me into the person I am now. I see this as a triumph instead of a failure. Even though most of us have never had this kind of problem, Ive seen how much tougher the Ateneo Grade School has made me than I was before. This isnt my only accomplishment in my grade school years in the Ateneo. I believe Ateneo has toughened me and made me resilient to challenges. I remember when I attended the Father and Son Night in Grade 4, and I was so worried with all my projects and exams that I didnt smile the entire afternoon. Now, I am able to handle projects without becoming wraught with worry. Ateneo taught me to be organized and to manage my time properly. It also taught me to not sweat the small stuff anymore -- there are a lot of things to be grateful for and to appreciate; and school projects, though important, are not the end all of things. I leave Ateneo Grade School with fond memories. The PALs in the cafeteria are one of these fond memories. They always were so honest and helpful. I remember having to come back to the counter constantly because I kept forgetting to get the change. This only proves how honest they are. I am very grateful for every pizza slice theyve wrapped or bacon theyve fried for me since Prep. Thank you Ateneo Grade School for everything. Thank you for the life lessons youve taught me. Thank you for the challenges you gave me and which I overcame such that I am now tougher and stronger. I may not have been the perfect student, but you my Ateneo Grade School molded me into the person I am now -- loving, kindhearted and true. These are words of my parents and I guess, I should take them as true. They are also a testament for a job well done, courtesy of Ateneo Grade School.

Finally, the time has come for us, my batch, to bid farewell to the Grade School and move on to the High School. Some of us still dont want to leave the grade school because of all the fun experiences and all the friendships developed. It has been a long, difficult, and trouble-filled year for all of us, but there have been fun and awesome times as well. I for one have had many problems, but with the love and support of God, our families, our teachers, and our friends, it has not been too hard for me. I can also say that this part of my life has been so awesome that if I were given the chance to choose a moment wherein I screwed up and change it, I would just leave it be because the way it all turned out means a lot to me that I cant change a thing. It has truly been a fun ride, but we all have to move on. Although many friends of mine say its tough in the High School, I cant wait for the new things to learn.
