Estrogen deficiency states, prevention of postmenopausal
osteoporosis. Management of atrophic vaginitis. Estrogens promote
the growth and development of female sex organs and maintenance
of secondary sex characteristics in women. Restors hormonal
balance in various deficiency states and treatment of hormone-
sensitive tumors.
Contraindications/warnings/interactions
Thromboembolic disease, liver dysfunction. Use cautiously in long
term use(4-5) years, may increase risk of MI, stroke, PE, DVT and
dementia in postmenopausal women.
Common side effects
H/A, edema, MI, thromboembolism, htn, nausea, wt. Changes,
amenorrhea, breakthrough bleeding, dysmenorrhea, gynecomastia,
breast tenderness.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask Lab value alterations caused by medicine
patient specifically) Inc in HDL and triglycerides, and dec serum LDL and total
Grapefruit juice cholesterol. Increase serum glucose, Na, cortisol, prolactin,
prothrombin and factor VII, VIII, IX, and X levels.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication
Report significant wt. Discrepancies or steady wt. Gain. Admin
with food to reduce nausea. No double doses. Don’t D/C abruptly.

BP, I & O, weekly wt. Fluid retention (swelling of ankles and feet, Normalization of estrogen
wt, gain) levels in pt. with ovariectomy.
