Unit: Quadratics - 8th Grade Mathematics Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-SSE.B.3 Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression. CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-APR.A.1 Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.

Behavioral/Objective Students should be able to multiply polynomials, specifically binomials using Algebra Tiles. Anticipatory Set Consider some type of structure you might want to build like a club or a gym. Lets pick some arbitrary values for the dimensions of our structure. How would you find the area of this structure? Imagine our business/hang out is really picking up in popularity and we need to make it bigger, much bigger. We dont really know how much we want to increase our dimensions by, so we will need a variable like x. Lets say we increase both sides by x. How would you find the area of the structure with these dimensions? Debriefing - Do you realize what you have just done? Objective/Purpose The other day, we learned how to multiply binomials by monomials. Today we are going to focus on multiplying two binomials using the Algebra tiles. Eventually, you should be able to multiply binomials without the tiles, but this is a good way to think about multiplication a little differently. Input Task Analysis a. The class will begin by checking the previous days homework. b. Anticipatory Set c. Have students number off (1-4) d. We introduce the lesson for the day. We start by modeling how we are going to use the algebra tiles to multiply two binomials together. e. The students are put into groups of 3 or 4. We assign them one problem to work on as a group. After some time, use Review Dice assessment and have the student chosen present their representation with the Algebra Tiles. f. Group discussion of whether everyone agrees with the students answer. Teacher deals with any misconceptions using guided questions. g. Continue with a new problem and, if needed, use Review Dice again. h. Closure

Thinking Levels By the end of this lesson, students should be using Application by using their knowledge of how to calculate area to manipulate the algebra tiles and find the answer to each problem. Learning Styles and/or Accommodations If some students quickly understand how to use the Algebra Tiles and others are struggling, the students who understand can move through other groups to help them understand as well. However, the student must make sure that his/her group members also understand as well as they do in case one of them is called on during the Review Dice assessment. Method and Materials Algebra Tiles Independent Practice Homework: Multiplying Binomials by Binomials handout. Closure Exit slip/Fogginess - What was one thing you learned today? What part of the lesson are you still confused about?
