COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP ED 468: INTRODUCTORY SUPERVISED TEACHING

Candidate: Irene Navarro Content Area: Mean and Median (Lesson 10.6) Subject Matter: Math Lesson Content Description: Introduce the mean of a set of data, and to review the median of a set of data. Type of Lesson: Direct Instruction Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery: Direct Instruction Content Standard: 2.0 ALGEBRA & FUNCTIONS Students represent simple functional relationships: ELD Standard: INTERMEDIATE COMPREHENSION Restate and execute multiple-step oral directions. Lesson Objective: All students will write and identify the mean and median for a set of numbers Assessment: Formative: -White Board Slates in the through portion of lesson -Observations -Student Discussions Summative: -Completed independent student worksheet -Math Journal Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs ELL: visual support, seated with a bilingual student, group activities (promote lower affective filter environment) ADHD: seated at the front of the class, given an individual copy of the outline of the lesson (to-do list), visual support Technology: 10.6 Lesson PowerPoint, document camera (used to go over workbook/reference book together with the students) Date: 03/15/13[FRIDAY] Grade Level: 3rd Grade

INTO Anticipatory Set/Orientation State the lessons objective Go over lessons vocabulary (mean, average, median, bar graph) Ask students for their own definitions or their experiences with the lessons vocabulary words Play song Mean, Mode, and Median by Ben Jacobs on You Tube State technology that will be used: Power Point, Internet Re-state Content Standard and Objective in student friendly terminology: Must tie into Assessment By the end of the lesson, you will know how to put whole numbers in order, use data to complete a bar graph, and find the median and mean of a data set. Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students Picture files, partner support, seated at the front of the class

THROUGH
Modeling/Presentation Use PowerPoint as a visual reference to talk about mean and median Guided/Structured Practice As a class, guide students in filling out page 253 in their Student Reference Book Go over filling out two examples for the bar graph and have students complete the rest of the bar graph Pass out coins or cubes and explain how to find the average using the manipulatives (rearrange manipulatives so each column in the graph has the same number of manipulatives) Talk about how to find the mean using the sum and dividing method Go over how to determine the median (use PowerPoint and page 80 in student reference book for this part of the lesson) Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment Have class complete the rest of page 253 after enough guided/structured practice Have class complete the rest of the bar graph after giving them several examples Have class put manipulatives on their bar graph and find the average this way Have class also have practice in finding the average through the sum and dividing Have class find out the median State technology that will be used (consistent in through):

PowerPoint Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students (consistent in through): Visual support, seated at front of the class, group discussions (lower affective filter environment)

BEYOND
Independent Practice/Summative Assessment/Closure Class will independently complete page 254 in their math book on finding out the mean and median (this page is very similar to the one in the through, but uses a different set of numbers and data) Give option for journaling time after worksheet is completed on what the students learned about finding the mean and median. Have them write about which method of finding the mean they prefer. Close class with discussion on mean and median. State technology that will be used: document camera (display workbook/math journal prompt) Outline adaptations for EL and special needs students -Give more time to EL/special needs students -Scaffold them as they work independently on their worksheet -Have them orally state to me what they learned instead of writing in their math journal
