NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 3.

OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES: Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in a responsible way, in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. (NAEYC, 2011) Brief Description of Evidence: During my Generalist Practicum in the summer of 2011 I observed an in home childcare program. I completed an assessment of classroom management and demographics. The assessment required me to observe the classroom procedures, the philosophy of the program, the demographics, the classroom teachers method of classroom management and write a reflection of my findings. I researched the methods and techniques of classroom management to better understand the multiple dynamics of an in home childcare program.

Analysis of What I Learned: Through completion of the management and demographics assessment I was able to interact in a positive way with staff and learn the process of in home childcare classroom management. I now know the importance of the daycares philosophy and how to incorporate the philosophy into the classroom. I am able to redirect children and learned the techniques used to discipline a child using positive reinforcement. Throughout the assessment I learned the routine the children use each day and the impact it has on their development. After seeing the routine implemented at this daycare I am able to make the connection between structure of an environment and positive behavior. How the Artifact Demonstrates my Competence in the NAEYC Standard: This is one of multiple assignments in which I have observed, assessed and reflected on my experience in a childcare setting as well as researched the techniques used in multiple situations to determine the best approach for optimal development or the child and positive relationships with parents through the centers philosophy and approach to development. I am now able to implement routines so children know what is expected of them throughout the day and make transitions smooth and predictable. According to LEARN NC, this process of routine can nurture a sense of ownership and community in your classroom.
