Shapes and Area Unit - 8th Grade Mathematics Area of Trapezoids [Actual Lesson] Standards CCSS.Math.Content.6.G.A.

1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. Behavioral/Objective The learner will be able to define what a trapezoid is and explain how to find the area of a general trapezoid by using what they know about the area of triangles and other quadrilaterals. Students will be able to use the formula for the area of a trapezoid to solve real-world problems. Anticipatory Set Review the formulas for the area of parallelograms and triangles. Go over homework and some example problems from the day before. Objective/Purpose There are times in our life where we need to find the area of a specific shape. Today you will be working in stations to develop your own formula for the area of a trapezoid. One of these stations will also require you to apply the formula and solve some problems.

Input Task Analysis Anticipatory Set (10 minutes) State objective (3 minutes) Provide very clear instructions for the remaining procedure of the class (2 minutes)

Students will spend 15 minutes in groups working on one of the methods listed

below Groups present the results from their method (3 minutes per group) Closure Thinking Levels By the end of this lesson, students will reach the application level. They will be using the formula that they derive from the main activity to answer several real-world problems. Method and Materials Methods Method 1 - Derive area of a trapezoid by splitting the trapezoid into triangles. Method 2 - Derive area of a trapezoid by inserting the trapezoid in a rectangle. Method 3 - Derive area of a trapezoid by doubling it and forming a parallelogram. Materials Handouts Manipulatives Closure Point out that there are multiple methods for arriving at the same end result. Assign homework. Assignment - Apply the formula for the area of a trapezoid. Use the same formula to find the area of a square, a rectangle, a parallelogram, and a trapezoid. Use the formula to solve real-world/word problems. Independent Practice Homework: Finish application problems (homework)
