Lesson Plan

Subject: Science-My Earth Duration: 30 minutes Grade: Kindergarten Date: 2/12/13

Objective/ CCSS/ IEP:

Objective: students will develop observation and recording skills through the study of a variety of rocks Goal: to have students increase their observation and describing skills

Accommodations

Materials:

Variety of rocks (one per student) One hand lens per student Book: If You Find A Rock My Observation Page (one per student) Colored pencils Read students the book "If You Find A Rock" Have students share their rock collecting experiences Tell students that their homework will be to bring in a rock from home because we are going to start a science center where we observe our seeds and rocks. Place a rock on the document camera Ask students to make observations, what do they notice about the rock on the SMARTBoard? o color, texture, pattern/design, shape, size Introduce 'My Observations Page' to students Explain what a property is, a property is something you can see or feel about your rock. For example, color is a property of the rock because I can see the rock is grey. Fill in the first part of the paper by using the students descriptions. Next draw a detailed picture of the rock, modeling for students what their rock should look like. Model a non-example as well. If I wrote above that my rock was grey but then colored an orange rock on my picture is that okay? No, we want to make sure that our description of our rock and our picture of our rock are the same. Read aloud the sentence at the end of the paper, "My rock is special because..." complete the sentence and explain to students that any answer is a great answer and the students should do their best job to think spell on this paper Ask students if they have any questions

Guided Practice:

Dismiss students back to their seats by passing My Observations page Rocks should already be placed at students tables The Observation page will be completed as a class. o Everyone point to the word in the first box, this says color. I want you to think spell the color of your rock on the box next to it. o Continue with: texture, pattern/design, shape, size Once the students are done describing their rock they will draw a picture of it Once their picture is finished they need to finish the writing prompt: My rock is special because using their best think spelling Students will have an opportunity to complete the observation worksheet individually at the science center in the classroom Collect students papers when they are finished, explain that they will be able to work on it during quiet time if they would like. Explain that we will soon be having a new science center that will have these papers at it. They will be observing rocks and our seeds when they are at that center. Remind students that their homework is to bring in a rock from home that we can use at the observation table.
