Criticism

Other researchers have developed theories that contradict Masters and Johnsons work. Helen Singer Kaplan created a three stage model that reflected what the original researchers had created, but from a different perspective. She proposed a three stage model that includes desire, vasocongestion (Engorgement of the genitals), and muscle contractions (orgasm) In her theory, she points out that an analysis of sexual response should begin with sexual desire and that no distinction can be drawn between the stages of excitement and plateau. Since the publishing of their book over 30 years ago, further research has shown that some of their findings may be inaccurate and could apply to certain people. For example, some women may experience a refractory period in which they are not able to have multiple orgasms. Some men, on the other hand, are capable of having more multiple orgasms with little or no refractory period between them. Research has also shown that some woman may, under some circumstance, ejaculate at orgasm.

Discussion
Sexual Anatomy In their research, Masters and Johnson were able to dispel sexual myths regarding sexual anatomy. Their research was able to disprove that larger penises are more effective in providing sexual stimulation for women. Masters and Johnson concluded that the vagina was capable of accommodating to any penis regardless of size. Contrary to commonly held beliefs about what constitutes a large versus a small penis, the average sizes for both a flaccid and erect penis were smaller than what was expected. The researchers were also able to disprove that a larger flaccid penis would result in a larger erect penis. In a study done with two males, one had a penile length of 2.8 inches when flaccid and the other had one of 4 inches when flaccid. When erect, they both resulted in having the same length of 6.1 inches.

Discussion (Continued)
Female and Male Differences in Sexual Response After orgasm, both the male and female return to their unaroused state. Males, specifically, enter a refractory period where they are unable to orgasm within a few minutes, hours, or even days. Women, on the other hand, cannot enter this phase and are able to experience one or more orgasms after the first referred to as multiple orgasms.
