1.5 The following information is collected from students upon exiting the campus bookstore during the first week of classes: a. Amount of time spent shopping in the bookstore Answer: Numerical; Continuous variables because the answer represent quantities. The response arises from a measuring process b. Number of textbooks purchased Answer: Numerical; discrete variables because the answer represent quantities. The numerical values that from a counting process. c. Academic major Answer: Categorical because the values only be placed into categories allowing multiple selection for the answer. d. Gender Answer: Categorical because the values only be placed into categories allowing multiple selection for the answer. In this case the available answers would be male or female. Classify each of these variables as categorical or numerical. If the variable is numerical, determine whether the variable is discrete or continuous.

1.7 For each of the following variables, determine whether the variable is categorical or numerical. If the variable is numerical, determine whether the variable is discrete or continuous. a. Amount of money spent on clothing in the past month Answer: Numerical; Continuous variables because the answer represent quantities. The response arises from a measuring process in this case the amounts of money spend. b. Favorite department store Answer: Categorical because the values only be placed into categories allowing multiple selection for the answer. In this case the available answers would be the name of the department store. c. Most likely time period during which shopping for clothing takes place (weekday, weeknight, or weekend) Answer: Categorical because the values only be placed into categories allowing multiple selection for the answer. In this case the available answers would be seven

representing the days of the week. d. Number of pairs of shoes owned Answer: Numerical; discrete variables because the answer represent quantities. The numerical values that from a counting process in this case it would be the amount of shoes owned.

1.11 What is the difference between a statistic and a parameter? A statistic is a numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample. A parameter is a numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample. (Lavine, Krehbiel, & Berenson 2010, p. 6) 1.13 What is the difference between a categorical variable and a numerical variable? A categorical variable has values that are only place into categories. This could be used for days of the week or yes or no. It can have multiple variables. Numerical variable has values that represent quantities. It can be use to represent dollar amount for example what is your annual income. (Lavine, Krehbiel, & Berenson 2010, p. 6) 1.21 Three professors at Northern Kentucky University compared two different approaches to teaching courses in the school of business (M. W. Ford, D. W. Kent, and S. Devoto, Learning from the Pros: Influence of Web-Based Expert Commentary on Vicarious Learning about Financial Markets, Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, January 2007, 5(1), 4363). At the time of the study, there were 2,100 students in the business school and 96 students were involved in the study. Demographic data collected on these 96 students included class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), age, gender, and major. a. Describe the population of interest. The population of interest is the two different approaches to teaching courses in the school of business. b. Describe the sample that was collected. The sample is students in the business school. The collected data was from a small group to draw conclusion about a larger group of students. The data collected from 96 students included class, age, gender, and major. c. For each of the four demographic variables mentioned above, indicate if they are categorical or numerical. Class: categorical, age: numeric discrete, gender: categorical, major: categorical. 1.23 A sample of 50 undergraduate students answered the following survey. 1. What is your gender? Female _____ Male _____ 2. What is your age (as of last birthday)? _____ 3. What is your height (in inches)? _____ 4. What is your current registered class designation? Freshman _____ Sophomore _____ Junior _____ Senior _____ 5. What is your major area of study?

Accounting _____ Economics/Finance _____ Information Systems _____ International Business _____ Management _____ Marketing/Retailing _____ Other _____ Undecided _____ 6. At the present time, do you plan to attend graduate school? Yes _____ No _____ Not sure _____ 7. What is your current cumulative grade point average? _____ 8. What would you expect your starting annual salary (in $000) to be if you were to seek employment immediately after obtaining your bachelors degree? _____ 9. What do you anticipate your salary to be (in $000) after five years of full-time work experience? _____ 10. What is your current employment status? Full-time _____ Part-time _____ Unemployed _____ 11. How many clubs, groups, organizations, or teams are you currently affiliated with on campus? 12. How satisfied are you with the student advisement services on campus? _____ Extremely 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Extremely unsatisfied Neutral satisfied 13. About how much money did you spend this semester for textbooks and supplies? _____ a. Which variables in the survey are categorical? 1, 4, 5, 6, 10, b. Which variables in the survey are numerical? 2,3,7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 c. Which variables are discrete numerical variables? 2, 3, 11, 12 The results of the survey are in the file .Undergradsurvey.
