ENGEL ANNOUNCES $2 MILLION GRANT FOR YONKERS SUPERSTORM SANDY CLEANUP Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-16) announced today that the City of Yonkers was awarded a $2,062,270.19 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The funds are for the removal of over 30,000 yards of hazardous vegetative debris which fell in parks, roads and rights of way following Hurricane Sandy. Rep. Engel said, The devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in Westchester County including the damages suffered in Yonkers was widespread and very costly. The impact the storm had on homes, businesses and public facilities was overwhelming and horrific for the people who endured it. Help has been badly needed in Yonkers, all of Westchester, and across the Metropolitan area. I am very pleased to see Yonkers obtain this FEMA grant to enable the city to continue its efforts to recover from the storm, and to help pay for the work already completed. Mayor Spano, and city officials, have done a great job leading the city through the cleanup, and the municipal crews in charge of doing the work have been tireless and deserve all the help they can get, said Rep. Engel. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said, I want to thank our Congressional delegation for their steadfast dedication in securing these funds which will continue our Sandy recovery efforts in Yonkers. I especially want to thank Congressman Engel who fought for these dollars after he witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by Sandy in the initial days after the storm. We appreciate his commitment to Yonkers and our residents. XXX
