Excitation Current Measurements The excitation current is defined as current flows in any one of the transformer windings until

reaches to be excited while all other windings are open-circuited. Transformer excitation current test is helpful in determining possible winding or core problems in transformers, even when ratio and winding resistance tests appear normal. It is performed on the high voltage winding to minimize the excitation current while problems in the low voltage windings will still be detected. So, the test supply voltage which is 10 KV will be supplied for every phase of the primary winding separately while the other primary and all secondary windings will be floated and detect the excitation current readings for every secondary winding which should be compared with the old excitation current measurements. Measurements of voltage ratio and check the vector group The vector group for primary and secondary side of the tested transformer should be checked and compared with its original vector group which is mounted on its name plate. This step is very important to ensure the transformer connection for both sides is perfect. Also, the turns ratio of the tested transformer will be measured for every phase separately in every tap position and compared with the original turns ratio to ensure the windings in both sides of transformer is
