CASE STUDY

On the afternoon of May 27, the people of Jamshedpur were exposed to a dense, pale green, pungent and poisonous gas, Chlorine. The gas started leaking from the water purifying unit of the Telco plant, run by the Tata Group, at 11 am The next day, around 150 to 200 people had been hospitalized. Residents started having respiratory problems and vomiting as density of gas had increased.The affected people also included company employees and their family members. So far no deaths have been reported

PROBLEM

ANALYSIS OF DATA

According to local police, residents of the township complained of dizziness as the gas leaked into their homes. The victims, including children, were rushed to hospital with complaints of suffocation and a burning sensation in the eyes. Many of then rushed into the streets and fell unconscious. While there were no casualties, at least five persons have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Tata Motors Hospital. Hospital authorities said chlorine could prove fatal if inhaled in a large quantities.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

Local media reported that about 10 percent of the gas was still in the 650-liter drum when the leak took place.
The company did not give any cause for the leak.

These are: The Factories Act, 1948, as amended in 1976 and 1987 The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 The Public Liability Insurance Act, 1991, amended in 1992 The Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989 The Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules, 1989

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION

Toxic chemicals should be properly disposed or stored because these are hazardous that can case illnesses and even death The plant should considered environmental issue Public education and information shold be given to the community

RECOMMENDATION

Construct a proper storage in every plant Preventive measure must be taken place. Prevention method should be implemented in standard operating, training, maintenance, and hazard modification. Proper management of industrial hazard
