Sustainable Development Symposium Summer 2013


July 16 - 24, 2013 (9 days) For students entering grades 10-12

THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SYMPOSIUM is a demanding summer program specially developed for pre-college (G10-12) students who are keen to raise their global, social and self awareness through a rst-hand exploration of a relevant contemporary issue of strategic relevance to future generations - sustainable development. We believe that our future leaders, whether they are engaged in government, private enterprise or non-pro t organizations, must be equipped with relevant life skills and knowledge to be impactful as responsible global citizens. e Centre for Sustainable Development and Global Competitiveness (CSDGC) at Stanford University, in collaboration with Foundation Global Education and d.farm, has introduced a summer program which is unlike other university courses: interactive workshops and seminars with scholars and industry practitioners, eld visits, self-managed projects and high caliber mentors from Stanford University.

Program Elements
Innovation
Tomorrow's leaders will need to compete in a creative and innovative environment. To develop these qualities, students must be immersed in an academically challenging yet nurturing atmosphere. At the symposium, students will learn to: Integrate business development strategies with leadership practices ' ink outside the box' without forfeiting pragmatic considerations Challenge conventional ideas and viewpoints by thinking critically and from multiple perspectives

Sustainability
In today's fast growing world, natural resources are being consumed rapidly, often without regard for the social or environmental impacts. Sustainable development aims to address our present and future needs without jeopardizing future generations' ability to meet their own needs. In the symposium, students will: Attend workshops and seminars with scholars and industry leaders See sustainable development in action through visits to significant facilities Learn about the practical implications of sustainable development in everyday life

Program Features
S ELF - MANAGED P ROJECT
Participants will work in teams to brainstorm, research, analyze, and develop a one-of-a- kind project of special relevance to their community, school or home- addressing the di culties of achieving sustainable development in a real-life situation. Students will be asked to present their ideas and ndings through multi-media presentations, simulations, and other creative channels. Each team will be mentored by a faculty member or student from Stanford.

F IELD V ISITS
To better understand how sustainable development is promoted and operated in the real world setting, site visits to some of the most noteworthy facilities are arranged, including Eco-development regions and well-known international organizations.

C OLLEGE P REPARATION
College counseling sessions will help students formulate strategies to build a strong portfolio for college admission. Students will also be guided on how to write successful personal essays.

I NTERACTIVE D ISCUSSIONS
With the small class setting, students will be able to communicate and interact with speakers directly through workshops and seminars. ey will be engaged in discussions similar to those conducted at U.S. college classrooms.

R ENOWNED G UEST S PEAKERS


Successful business leaders and scholars from the U.S. have been invited to share their unique experiences and insights on sustainable development. Students will learn rst-hand from passionate individuals about making an impact in di erent capacities.

C AREER P ROSPECTS
Sustainable development is a signi cant issue which impacts a wide range of careers such as business, engineering, architecture, product development, and research sciences. Students will be able to seek advice and guidance from professionals in di erent elds related to this topic.

A DMISSION R EQUIREMENT
e program is designed for pre-college (rising G10-12) students who are: Strong English speakers and writers Intellectually curious and bright Self-motivated and mature Interested in global issues, policy formation and current aairs Young leaders who are actively engaged in school and community Applicants will be asked to submit an application essay to assist the selection process. Interviews will be arranged for short-listed applicants. A non-refundable application fee of USD75 will be required.
