Main idea Main idea

Planning
1. Identifying Topics -chose a topic that does not have a true right or wrong answer and will open for debate, these tend to be controversial 2. Specifying Learning Objectives -this model opens the door for doing 3 things, Deepening the understanding of the topic, provide critical thinking practice, and develop social skills 3. Developing Student Knowledge -before you hold the class discussion, students must have been exposed to the information, through lecture, research and other resources so that they can have knowledge to talk about 4. Establishing Structure -decide exactly what you would like your students to do at each point of the lesson, the groups they will be divided into and how you would like then to discuss

Implementing
Phase 1: Introduction -introduce the lesson, bring attention to the topic, have students fill in a graphic organizer, or take some type of notes to begin engaging their focus Phase 2: Exploration -at this time students will pick a side and begin to dialogue with their classmates while the teacher facilitates and keeps the conversation going when it begins to slow Phase 3: Closure -review what the students have discussed, as well as bringing out the main ideas that they need to carry with them, as well as link what was covered to the next lesson if necessary.

Assessing
A traditional essay will assess the students critical thinking as well as the knowledge from the lecture and discussion Assess students on if they worked well together, participated, used evidence to back up their statements

Motivation/ Modification
Motivation: -students are motivated to talk about the controversial topic -students are motivated because of the open conversation -students are motivated because they have a chance to work with their peers as well as contribute to the lesson and actively participate in their learning Modification: -if this is conducted in a younger classroom the teacher may have to facilitate more as well as have clearer resources(premade questions for them to answer and discuss) for students to pull information from

So what? What is important to understand about this?

It is important to understand that this model is good for building critical thinking skills as well as social skills through group work and discussion. Students have the opportunity to share their opinion with their classmates
