Introduction to Unit-Laws & The Constitution Name: Nikkie Rudder Date: October 31, 2012 Subject: Social Studies-How

Laws Protect Us Length of Lesson: 1 hours Grade Level: 2nd Grade Social Studies Core Curriculum Objectives (Content): Standard 2 (Citizenship): Students will recognize and practice civic responsibility in the community, state, and nation. Objective 1 Examine civic responsibility and demonstrate good citizenship. b. Explain the benefits of being a U.S. citizen (e.g., responsibilities, freedoms, opportunities, and the importance of voting in free elections). Objective 3 Investigate and show how communities, state, and nation are united by symbols that represent citizenship in our nation. a. Identify community and state symbols, documents and landmarks (e.g., city hall, county courthouse, state capitol, Utah State Constitution, flag, holidays). b. Identify and explain the significance of various national symbols, documents, and landmarks (e.g., Declaration of Independence, Constitution, flag, Pledge of Allegiance, national monuments, national capitol building). Language Objectives: Students will discuss the problems of Shiver, Gobble, and Snore and how they solved those problems. They will also write a paper about Shiver, Gobble, and Snore and why laws protect us. Preparation: -Make sure I have the Shiver, Gobble, Snore DVD -Check to make sure DVD player and sound work -Print copies of Shiver, Gobble, Snore coloring pages -Print copies of how laws protect us writing pages TIME: 30-45 minutes LESSON: Introduction: We will watch the movie Shiver, Gobble, Snore and then discuss why it is important to have laws. Ex. Driving laws, stealing Questions: What problem did Shiver, Gobble, and Snore have? How did they solve it? Were their laws good or bad? How were the second rules better? Why do WE need rules or laws? How do they protect us? What might our classroom be like MANAGEMENT: -No talking during the movie, students sit at their desks, cannot keep others from being able to watch the movie

without rules? What happens if you break a law? 45-60 minutes Content/Activity 1. Students will be given large coloring pictures of the characters (Shiver, Gobble, and Snort). -Color the pictures then cut them out -Glue all three onto a large piece of paper and put a title on the page that says Why Laws Protect Us. -Give example of what it should look like in the end 2. Students will be given a writing page that has small pictures of Shiver, Gobble, and Snore and lines for them to write about how laws protect us. -First color the characters and then write -Must model what is expected in their writing Read some of these funny laws to them as they are working: http://lorla.com/strange-and-funny-americanlaws/ ClosureTalk about how a bill becomes a law http://kids.clerk.house.gov/gradeschool/lesson.html?intID=17 -Students sit at desks and work quietly

If students do not finish their writing, they will have to finish the next day during another activity.

Evaluation I will know the students have learned about laws if they are able to give me an example of laws and write about why we need laws and how they protect us. Adaptations: -Some students will also have trouble focusing and staying on task. For this, some accommodations to be done are to limit distractions and to implement classroom management skills to keep the class engaged. -Put up samples of writing for students to use as they write about how laws protect us -Individual writing help Integration: -Language Arts/Writing
