GUIDED DISCOVERY

Is about

Guided Discovery allows the students to draw on his/her own experience and prior knowledge to discover the truths that are to be learned/It is the presentation of new material or concepts which can be deduced or discovered by the individual students

THEORITICAL FOUNDATION

PLANNING

IMPLEMENTING

ASSESSING & MOTIVATION

Developed by Dr. Charles E. Wales at the Center for Guided Design, West Virginia University This method requires that the teacher "devise a series of statements or questions that guides the learner, step by logical step, making a series of discoveries that leads to a single predetermined goal" Dr. Wales believes that allowing students to perform more "critical thinking" skills will help them to better retain information A.K.A=LEARN-BY-DOING

Identifying Topics - -Where do you begin? How do you plan to deliver

the topic/lesson to your students? Concepts (a category., set, or class with common characteristics) and/or Generalizations (a statement that relates concepts to each other in general patterns) are good topics to discuss because they are specific and well-defined.

Introduction
-After the teacher has reviewed the previous day's work, she/he begins to establish the focus of the lesson and letting students know why the previous discussion led up to the current lesson/topic. In other words, the teachers' main objective is to create interest for the students. The open-ended phase -Open ended questions are the "heart" of this component.- This phase is what ignites the students' involvement. Teachers can begin by presenting examples and asking the students to identify patterns in them, presenting both an example and non-example and asking the students to contrast the two, presenting an example as a whole-class discussion and asking the students to observe and describe it, and so forth... The convergent phase -Once every student has giving their input, the teacher begins to narrow down the students1 responses and starts to ask more specific questions which promotes deeper-level thinking so that the students are able to get a straight-forward understanding of the topic/lesson Closure and Application -Teachers are now able to guide the students towards being able to verbally explain the characteristics of the concept and/or the relationship in a generalizationOnce satisfied that all students have the ability to apply the information on their own, the teacher can then give an assignment which requires them to apply what they've learned in anew context... A.KA=LESSON LEARNED!!

ASSESSING

Specifying Learning Objectives

-What do you want students to gain from the topic? Teachers' should be clear about their learning objectives before proceeding to teach the topic/lesson. Students should be able to dissect the information into smaller pieces so it becomes more familiar (critical analysis) Prepare Examples and Non-examples -#l-Make sure they are high quality examples, containing all the information the students need to reach the goal of the topic...teachers have the ability to use as many examples needed #2-Make sure students are able to tie the examples to the "real-world"/ "real-life" experiences #3-Teachers should make sure that they have different types of examples on-hand, just in case one becomes more effective than the other (ex. Concrete materials, pictures, vignettes( short case studies), and models) #4-Use TECHNOLOGY....it's engaging and increases the students' motivation

#1-Teachers need to make sure that their learning objectives match their learning activities {ineffective if it does not). Teachers can also access their students by standard tests, quizzes, and class projects....make sure to provide detailed feedback and have a "whole class" discussion review. Students should be able to repeat process with a similar concept MOTIVATION The students are motivated by the ability to be independent, make purposeful choices, active engagement, curiosity (not knowing what to expect), semi-adult responsibilities, and creativity.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

The GUIDED DISCOVERY model helps students to become independent thinkers/By actively doing/thinking/and researching on their own, the learner will understand and therefore remember the subject matter
